SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman.  \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

PHYLZZZ \nFormed in late 2015\, mr.phylzzz (pronounced mr. flyzzz) has spent the last decade mutating\, evolving\, and cementing their reputation as one of the most blistering\, uncompromising forces in modern noise rock. What began as a raw\, multi-instrumental project has sharpened into a lean\, mean\, two-piece wall of sound consisting of Clinton Jacob (guitar/vocals) and Danny Sein (drums). Now anchored in the gritty musical landscape of Chicago\, the duo crafts a chaotic\, high-velocity sonic assault that balances punishing\, heavy riffs with an undeniable knack for twisted\, melodic hooks. \nThe band’s rapid\, jagged trajectory quickly caught the ear of Tom Hazelmyer\, founder of the legendary underground imprint Amphetamine Reptile Records (AmRep). A badge of honor for any band pushing the boundaries of aggressive music\, mr.phylzzz made their label debut on the prestigious Dope Guns ’N Fucking in the Streets Vol. 14 compilation. They followed that up with their first proper full-length album\, Penitent Curtis\, in 2019—a record that laid the groundwork for their signature blend of cranked amps\, driving percussion\, and volatile vocal delivery. \nWhen the pandemic brought the world to a standstill\, the project underwent a metamorphosis. Operating in isolation\, Jacob continued to write at a feverish pace. As restrictions lifted\, a relocation to Chicago sparked a powerful new chemistry with the addition of drummer Danny Sein. The resulting synergy produced 2022’s Cancel Culture Club\, a critically acclaimed record that showcased a tighter\, more furious version of the band. The album drew well-deserved attention from noise rock royalty\, featuring guest appearances from the Melvins’ King Buzzo and Kevin Rutmanis. \nJD PINKUS \nJD Pinkus is an American bassist best known for his work with American punk band Butthole Surfers from1985 to 1994 and since the 2009 reunion. In 1990\, he and Butthole Surfers’ lead vocalist Gibby Haynes released Digital Dump\, the only album from their psychedelic house music side project The Jackofficers. Upon leaving Butthole Surfers\, Pinkus worked full-time with the Austin trio Daddy Longhead\, which he had assembled during his waning months in the band\, and which included longtime Atlanta associate Jimbo Young on guitar and Rey Washam on drums. Daddy Longhead retired after 10 years\, leaving Pinkus free to explore other projects including Skinny Leonard and Areola 51. Pinkus played with Helios Creed on his albums NUGG The Transport [1996] and Activated Condition [1998]\, and has also collaborated with Bad Livers frontman Danny Barnes several times in a live setting. JD Pinkus then co-founded the band Honky who went on to record five albums and are still currently active. Pinkus also performs with Pure Luck\,who released a self-titled release in 2017 on Heavy Feather Records. He leaves his bass to play Banjo and Guitar in this project. On their 30th anniversary tour in 2013\, Pinkus joined the Melvins in place of Jared Warren (on paternity leave) as well as performing with the opening Honky. He subsequently joined the Melvins full-time\, touring with them in 2014 in support of the album Hold It In\, which also featured Butthole Surfers founder Paul Leary\, and again in 2015.

Pastels\, paper\, and sketching and underpainting supplies are provided\, with premium sanded paper available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

SUMMARY:Poetry Primer: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:This full-bodied\, 5-week poetry series will guide participants from “Ooof\, poetry” to “Where’s my journal?!” by buoying artistic play and cultivating attention.  We’ll take notice of neon color palettes\, everyday coffee-shop conversation\, rhythmic twitches in the body\, the gruff and warm-hearted voice of life\, and see what happens when we revolutionize those noticings into language.  Weaving together poetic elements + form\, guided discussion\, and past poetic works\, we’ll step into a multidisciplinary creative space!  Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation and skill building.  It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner or to reignite passion around well-worn skills.
