SUMMARY:Craft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft
DESCRIPTION:The word craft-itarianism was coined by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez to name artistic projects that generate employment\, raise awareness\, or offer therapeutic support through craft. These programs provide a space where people affected by addiction\, incarceration\, and gun violence can find solidarity while learning a skill. \nCraft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft celebrates nonprofits and artists who believe in—and actively practice—the power of craft to support and empower individuals and communities. \nThis exhibition was curated by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez. Launched in 2017\, the Curatorial Fellowship supports emerging curators exploring new ideas about craft with mentorship\, professional development\, and a $5\,000 honorarium to realize an exhibition. \nOn view February 27\, 2026–September 27\, 2026

SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman. \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

SUMMARY:Patio Show: Jackson Slater & The Revelators
DESCRIPTION:– LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE\nJackson Slater & The Revelators\nLike a moonshine-fueled fire in a 100-watt amplifier cabinet\, Jackson Slater’s explosive debut ushers in a new era of heavy rock from the Southland. The new album\, Holy Water Inn\, includes seven original tracks\, interlacing Jackson’s emotionally raw vocals and lightning guitar with soaring melodies and thundering rhythms. It’s a sonic tapestry woven from generations of hard rock\, high-octane country\, and drop-tuned bass. Yet\, the sound is unique\, unflagging\, unstoppable. Jackson’s band\, the Revelators\, features three of the Carolinas’ most kick-ass musicians\, all talented multi-instrumentalists. Hammering the drums with a fury known to occasionally knock them off risers\, Brennan Walsh anchors the group with complex\, driving syncopations. On bass\, Justin Garcia lays down deep\, fist-pounding grooves with old-school swagger. Finally\, paying tribute to the history of country music\, Max Jacobson completes the orchestration with blazing Telecastin’ A live show will leave you breathless.

SUMMARY:Patio Show: ANZA
DESCRIPTION:-LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE ANZA ANZA is a high vibe sister duo consisting of 14 yo Anzi & 17 yo Anna Rivers. Song writing and composing has been a life long passion. Born in Colorado and raised between the high mountain desert landscapes of the Rockies and the lush\, ancient mountains of Western North Carolina\, the sisters draw deep inspiration from the natural world and the communities that have shaped them. Their musical journey began in the womb into childhood with weekly ecstatic dance\, nightly improvised lullabies\, bedtime stories sung instead of read\, family dance nights and conscious summer music festivals. Their lives have been filled with backyard campfire jam sessions\, conversations that reach beyond cultural norms\, and impromptu performances in living rooms\, art galleries\, and community gatherings. Since the age of five\, Anna and Anzi have studied with Jeremy Dittus at the Dalcroze School of the Rockies\, cultivating a deep musical foundation that led them to piano\, guitar\, composition\, and performance. Their educational journey has included Waldorf education\, homeschooling\, forested Co-ops and inner city high schooling. This has allowed them to explore a wide range of artistic\, cultural\, and academic studies. ANZA has performed throughout Western North Carolina at venues including Ayuprana Listening Room\, LEAF Global\, White Horse Black Mountain\, Grey Eagle\, and Salvage Station. They have shared their music at festivals\, ceremonies\, retreats\, and around countless campfires and stages with artists such as Max Ribner\, Paul Izak\, Tubby Love\, Shylah Ray Sunshine and The Freedom Family Band. ANZA has sung alongside MaMuse\, Samara Jade\, Aimée Ringle\, and Micaela Kingslight during Circle Revival Gatherings\, an immersive six-hour musical ceremony attended by over 1\,100 participants. They have spent significant time recording in professional studios with Max Ribner and Roots Grown Deep and have received encouragement and praise from Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jim Lauderdale and acclaimed songwriter Marty Dodson. A UK radio station recently described their debut album\, Break Through\, as: “With a clear ’60s influence\, reminiscent of the style and storytelling associated with Joni Mitchell\, which is surprisingly rare in artists of this age. The harmonies are a real standout\, and the vocals have a warmth and confidence that genuinely evoke that era rather than simply imitate it. It feels timeless rather than retro for the sake of it.”

SUMMARY:URSA Asheville Presents: A Performance of Coltrane's *Interstellar Space* - With Jeff Arnal & Steve Alford
DESCRIPTION:URSA ASHEVILLE AND APLR Present: A PERFORMANCE OF COLTRANE’S *INTERSTELLAR SPACE* \nTuesday\, September 22nd\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6 PM || Show 7 PM \nAs part of *Giant Steps: Celebrating 100 Years of John Coltrane*\, URSA Asheville and AyurPrana Listening Room present a free\, RSVP performance of Coltrane’s *Interstellar Space* on Tuesday\, September 22\, 2026\, at 7:00 p.m. The performance will be followed by a conversation with the audience and a Q&A moderated by Dr. Bill Bares. \nRecorded on February 22\, 1967 — just months before Coltrane’s death\, and not released until 1974 — *Interstellar Space* paired Coltrane’s tenor saxophone with the drums of Rashied Ali in an extended suite of duets\, stripped of piano and bass entirely. Widely regarded as a landmark of free jazz\, the album remains one of the most daring and spiritually charged recordings of Coltrane’s career\, and one of the last studio statements he would make. \nFor this performance\, saxophonist Steve Alford of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and drummer Jeff Arnal of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) will take on Coltrane and Ali’s roles\, bringing their own voices to the duo’s open\, unaccompanied dialogue. \nFollowing the performance\, Alford will speak about Coltrane’s music and legacy\, and Arnal — who knew Rashied Ali personally — will share stories about Ali and discuss the practice of free drumming. \nThe evening is a collaboration between URSA Asheville\, AyurPrana Listening Room\, and the two musicians\, offered free to the public as part of URSA’s mission to bring first-rate jazz to Asheville. RSVP and additional information are available at **ursaasheville.org**. \n“URSA is proud to partner with AyurPrana in presenting this unique guided tour of the complex worlds of late-Coltrane era free jazz\, featuring two of the most experienced and creative exponents of free jazz in North Carolina\,” said Dr. Bill Bares\, President and Founder\, URSA Asheville. \nAbout the Artists \nJeff Arnal \nJeff Arnal is an American percussionist\, composer\, and community organizer working across experimental\, improvised\, and interdisciplinary music\, shaped by more than three decades of work in contemporary classical music\, jazz\, and free improvisation. \nA student of percussionist Milford Graves and composer Stuart Saunders Smith\, Arnal has recorded for Clean Feed\, Mahakala Music\, NoBusiness Records\, and Generate Records\, and his drumming has been praised by *The Wire* for its “balletic sense of time and imaginative deployment of colour.” \nHe is Executive Director of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville\, where he has led the organization since 2016. \nSteve Alford \nSteve Alford is a multi-instrumentalist and educator specializing in contemporary improvisational music. A saxophone graduate of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music\, he toured extensively across the United States and Europe before settling in Chicago\, developing expertise on harmony clarinets and performing across straight-ahead jazz\, modern improvised music\, and experimental indie-rock. \nAfter relocating to Asheville\, Alford taught at Mars Hill University and UNC Asheville while earning his Master’s in Jazz from the University of Tennessee\, and later served as coordinator for Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation Studies at the University of Minnesota Morris. \nHe has developed a widely respected pedagogy centered on multi-lateral ear training and melodic immersion\, and leads a range of adventurous ensembles\, including the 11-piece big band Rational Discourse and the punk-jazz E.Normus Trio. \nThis performance is part of *Giant Steps: Celebrating 100 Years of John Coltrane*\, a festival of performances\, education\, and conversation celebrating the life\, music\, and legacy of John Coltrane\, presented as part of the worldwide Coltrane 100 centennial. \nAll ages

You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.
