SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman. \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

SUMMARY:Sister Act - Flat Rock Playhouse - 10/2-10/25
DESCRIPTION:When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a crime\, she hides out in the last place anyone would look — a convent. Suddenly\, the sequins are swapped for habits\, and the nightclub turns into a nave. But when Deloris brings her unholy amount of soul to the choir loft\, heaven gets a whole new groove. \nSister Act is a holy-rolling\, soul-lifting celebration of sisterhood\, second chances\, and songs that raise the roof. As Deloris helps the sisters find their voices\, they just might change her heart in return. \nPart divine comedy\, part disco revival\, it’s proof that a little funk — and a lot of faith — can turn any sanctuary into a showstopper. \nEvent Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Paul Thorn
DESCRIPTION:SEATED SHOW\nLIMITED NUMBER OF PREMIUM SEATING TICKETS AVAILABLE \nPAUL THORN\nWhen it comes to songwriting\, less is more\, and simplicity is strength. Just ask Paul Thorn\, who’s spent three decades turning soulful grooves and small syllables into songs that pack a big wallop. Maybe he learned the power of minimalism from his years as a pro boxer; maybe it just comes naturally. But whether he’s targeting heads\, hearts\, hips or the occasional funny bone\, he somehow manages to condense large nuggets of wisdom into tight little mantras\, the kind embroiderers stitched onto pillows before internet memes existed.\nThorn’s new album\, Life is Just A Vapor\, contains some beauties: “Life is a vapor\, let’s live it while we can”; “tough times don’t last\, but tough people do” (from “Tough Times Don’t Last”); “any mountain up ahead is just a hill” (from “Old Melodies”). They’re words of advice\, comfort\, support\, encouragement\, often meant to uplift\, especially in times of struggle. \n“I like for people to be touched by music and get something from it\, something that they can take with them throughout the day\,” Thorn says. “Every song on this album\, there’s a message in it of some sort about how to live life.” \nAmerican Blues Scene writer Don Wilcock calls Thorn “an everyman (who) addresses things we all think about\, but few can articulate with the kind of candor\, humor and folksy truth that immediately endear him to almost everyone lucky enough to hear his music.” \nWhether he’s expressing love in “I Knew\,” warning an ex’s new conquest about the dangers ahead in “She Will\,” extolling the value of holding off on sex in “Wait” or listing the ingredients for making a marriage work in “Courage My Love” (“a half-acre on your daddy’s land / and a little luck / a load of white gravel in our driveway / so we don’t get stuck in a rut /a 3-horsepower lawnmower and courage my love”)\, Thorn delivers his messages with consummate skill — and pinpoint precision. One minute\, he’ll unwind an outrageous tale full of wild characters (often accompanied by his own cartoonish illustrations); the next\, he’ll tug at heartstrings with confessions of love\, loss or failed dreams\, balancing wit and pathos with an ease only the best storytellers can pull off. One of Thorn’s favorites was his friend and mentor John Prine\, who inspired the title tune.

SUMMARY:APLR Presents: Jon Mueller's FRIEND LESS with Adam Lion & Bryce Franich's Trekchö Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Jon Mueller’s FRIEND LESS with Adam Lion & Bryce Franich’s Trekchö Ensemble Record Release \nMonday\, October 5th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Event 7PM \nAPLR is thrilled to welcome back Jon Mueller\, Adam Lion\, and Bryce Franich on Monday\, October 5th. Join us for an evening at the outer edges of sound\, featuring the debut of Mueller’s FRIEND LESS\, Lion’s return to Asheville\, and Franich’s album release. \nFRIEND LESS \nFRIEND LESS is a project by Jon Mueller. Its two recent EPs\, Energy Rippers and Logic of Relics (with Bundy K. Brown and James Plotkin) aim to provoke the heart\, mind and body through an unorthodox approach to rhythmic patterns. In performance\, the pieces from Energy Rippers lean on a system of AIR (Acoustic Improvised Rhythm) using drums and voice to achieve a similar effect. More information about the project can be found at rhythmplex.com. \nJon Mueller studied jazz drumming with Hal Russell at Columbia College in Chicago\, and singing with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela at the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York. A prolific performer\, he tours extensively and has appeared at festivals and venues throughout the United States\, Canada\, England\, Europe and Japan. \nIn addition to his solo work\, Mueller has collaborated and performed with groups such as Who is the Witness?\, Mind Over Mirrors\, Volcano Choir\, Collections of Colonies of Bees\, and Pele. He has also worked with artists including Olivia Block\, Aaron Turner\, Faith Coloccia\, Timo van Luijk\, Dawn Springer\, Chris Hefner\, Jason Kahn\, Hal Rammel\, Asmus Tietchens\, Z’EV\, Rhys Chatham\, Jarboe\, James Plotkin\, Duane Pitre\, and Raymond Dijkstra. \nHe has released music on renowned labels such as Room40\, Astres d’Or\, American Dreams\, Table of the Elements\, Type Recordings\, Important Records\, Taiga Records\, SIGE Records\, and his own imprint\, Rhythmplex. \nAdam Lion \nOffering “a tone so pure it is almost a sine-wave” (The Wire)\, Adam Lion is a percussionist/vibraphonist investigating enabling constraint\, acoustics\, repetition\, surprise\, and coincidence. His experimental performances blur acoustic space\, creating opportunities for new sonic frameworks to naturally emerge. Within this process\, new realities grow\, encouraging listeners to investigate the hidden potential of reimagined sound. Based in Los Angeles\, his work has been featured in The New York Times\, Pitchfork Media\, Artforum Magazine\, and Bandcamp Daily. \n“When a Line Bends” is a vibraphone composition/improvisation performed by Adam Lion. This solo is an ever changing study of sound\, material\, performer\, and space. As these subjects enmesh\, relationships emerge dictating form and process\, pushing the music with a sense of immediacy. Lion navigates these constraints through techniques developed during the spontaneity of live performance\, an approach which openly embraces contingency as a powerful compositional tool. \nBryce Franich’s Trekchö Ensemble \nBryce Franich is an Asheville-based musician whose work focuses on feedback\, timbre\, and texture. \nHis latest project\, Trekchö Ensemble\, is an improvisational group made up of musicians working in experimental\, improvised\, and jazz music. This performance features Shane McCord\, Clay White\, Landon George\, Ashley Paul\, and Tony Rolando\, combining harmonium\, strings\, winds\, guitar\, gong\, and modular synthesis. Trekchö Ensemble focuses on working with the physical properties of sound: overtone\, resonance\, and the shifting textures that emerge as those elements interact. \nAll ages

SUMMARY:Lindsay Branham presents Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees\, with Sonya Renee Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Join us in-store when environmental psychologist Lindsay Branham presents Heartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees\, in conversation with spiritual and social theorist Sonya Renee Taylor. \nThe event is free but registration is required to reserve your seat. \nHeartwood: The Wisdom and Healing Kinship of Trees\nEmmy‑nominated filmmaker and University of Cambridge Environmental Psychologist Lindsay Branham invites readers into an embodied\, reciprocal relationship with trees to heal our severed connections to ourselves and the earth\, returning home to the living world. \nIn the midst of the California wildfire season\, Lindsay Branham was besieged by unexplainable health symptoms. Her descent into chronic illness challenged her notion of Western frameworks of “healing\,” compounded alongside rapid ecological loss. Through a catalytic love affair with a family of trees in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado\, an odyssey of healing unfolds—a poetic evocation to love the Earth\, and to be loved back. What if human and planetary health is connected? What if healing is an embodied ecological process\, not an outcome? What if trees are our guides to connection? \nThrough the intertwining rings of science and spirit\, this is the story of how Lindsay was summoned by trees\, brought together to share their enduring wisdom—we each belong to this world\, and it’s up to us to protect the whole of it. Heartwood conjures an invitation to go on a journey with trees; from strangers to kin because\, as Lindsay lays out in detail\, everything belongs\, and trees in all their sentinel\, entangled\, alchemical generosity embody that kinship\, defy domination and can help us both repair a lost relationship with the Earth and learn to embody mutuality\, collectivity and care for the forest. Combining scientific research from her PhD studies at Cambridge on interoceptive awareness\, our body’s “eighth sense\,” which she suggests is the sensuous language of the Earth\, readers will be walked through a step‑by‑step wonder-filled process of creating an intimate and reciprocal relationship with the more than human world\, while learning why remembering our birthright of belonging to nature is a central antidote to mitigating climate collapse. \nThis tender\, lyrical work explores concepts such as eco‑grief\, reciprocity as life force\, the pace of place\, erotic ecology\, attachment healing with nature\, composting suffering\, entangled futures\, loving inter-species kinship and death doulaship. Heartwood speaks directly to what is the missing piece at the heart of the unfolding environmental mega-crisis: the fact that our dissatisfaction\, discontent and despair are core symptoms of being separated from nature and shares exactly how to rediscover the medicine that is right under our feet.

SUMMARY:Fruition
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nFRUITION\nFor nearly two decades\, Fruition have built their genre-bending version of American roots music around harmony — not just the vocal interplay of the band’s three songwriters\, but the deeper harmony created between five friends who’ve spent years on the road together. On their eighth album\, Something More\, those bonds grow into something more collaborative than ever before. \nProduced by Grammy winner Tucker Martine\, Something More finds Fruition stepping into an era defined as much by exploration as craft. Fueled by melody-driven songwriting\, analog tones\, and atmospheric textures\, the album expands the band’s melting pot of rock\, folk\, pop\, soul\, and Americana into something more expansive and fully realized. \nMuch of the songwriting emerged from collaborative sessions between Jay Cobb Anderson\, Kellen Asebroek\, and Mimi Naja\, adding a shared perspective to songs rooted in reflection\, uncertainty\, acceptance\, and growth. “This record is us trusting each other more than we ever have — as humans and as musicians\,” says Anderson. “It’s the sound of us leaning into each other.” \nFrom the street corners of the Pacific Northwest to stages like Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Great American Music Hall\, Fruition have grown their career night by night and song by song. Something More feels like the next chapter: a collection of lessons absorbed\, trust deepened\, and a band fully embracing what they’ve become.
