SUMMARY:Palaces for the People: Guastavino's Great American Places
DESCRIPTION:From 1882 to 1943\, in 31 states and six countries\, Raphael Guastavino and his son created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings that met his criteria of health\, safety\, and beauty. Palaces for the People is an exhibition about his life and works. It is now open at Asheville Museum of History\, in the city where Guastavino completed his final projects. Unable to find a seat in the tiny Catholic church in Asheville\, he built his last great structure\, the St. Lawrence Basilica. In Asheville\, the exhibit will feature additional elements and artifacts highlighting Guastavino’s time in and around the city. The Exhibition is a co-operative venture of the Guastavino Alliance\, Christmount\, Swannanoa Valley Museum\, and St. Lawrence Basilica.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Vera B. Williams / STORIES
DESCRIPTION:Vera B. Williams / STORIES\nEight Decades of Politics and Picture Making\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center\nJanuary 26 – May 11\, 2024 \nVera B. Williams\, an award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books\, started making pictures almost as soon as she could walk. She studied at Black Mountain College in a time where summer institutes were held with classes taught by John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Williams studied under the Bauhaus luminary Josef Albers and went on to make art for the rest of her life. At the time of her death\, The New York Times wrote: “Her illustrations\, known for bold colors and a style reminiscent of folk art\, were praised by reviewers for their great tenderness and crackling vitality.” Despite numerous awards and recognition for her children’s books\, much of her wider life and work remains unexplored. This retrospective will showcase the complete range of Williams’ life and work. It will highlight her time at Black Mountain College\, her political activism\, and her establishment\, with Paul Williams\, of an influential yet little-known artist community\, in addition to her work as an author and illustrator.

SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

This year\, we celebrate the extraordinary global citizens who not only create art but also champion causes that resonate with the heartbeat of humanity. These are the voices that echo in the halls of change\, the hands that paint the canvas of a better tomorrow. Our chosen artists are not just masters of their crafts; they are beacons of hope\, tirelessly advocating for a world where justice\, peace\, and creativity flourish. \nOur journey with the World Changers theme is more than just an exhibition of talent; it is a call to action. It is an opportunity for each of us to reflect on the role we can play in shaping our world. As we delve into the lives and works of remarkable individuals\, let us be inspired to become active participants in the story of our global community. \nJoin us at LEAF Global Arts as we celebrate trailblazers who dare to dream and act for a world that uplifts every voice\, honors every story\, and cherishes every life. Together\, let’s venture into a season of learning\, growing\, and transforming the world\, one song\, one story\, one step at a time. \nWhat is LEAF Global Arts Retreat? Imagine all the adventure\, traditions\, art\, and music of LEAF festivals\, still at beautiful Lake Eden\, but in a more intimate gathering of just 1\,500 attendees. “Old School Magic and Happiness” is how people have described LEAF Retreat since its inception in 2021\, with space to kick back\, relax\, play\, camp and connect with arts\, music\, and nature – it’s super sweet. \nRetreat was created during COVID as a way to heal and experience joy in unusual times. We loved the experience so much that we decided to keep this format for our signature May event. Retreats are for renewal\, reconnecting\, and learning at Lake Eden’s 300+ acres. Come enjoy with family\, friends\, or solo!

SUMMARY:The Campfireball: Failure
DESCRIPTION:A storytelling show about you—the audience—The Campfireball is created spontaneously out of whatever stories and lives happen to be gathered together inside Story Parlor at that moment in time. There’s nothing to prepare and nothing to fear—participation is never required\, and the show is just as much fun to sit back and watch unfold as it is to play along. Come on out for a night of storytelling you will literally never be able to experience again. Never possible to know what’s coming next\, each Campfireball slowly begins to reveal surprises\, connections\, and communitas as the space transforms from a room of strangers to a room of neighbors. \nWorkshopped and developed over two years in the master’s program for storytelling at East Tennessee State University and showcased at the 2023 Asheville Fringe Festival\, host/storyteller Cory Howard (National Storytelling Festival\, Moth Grand Slam winner) blends intimacy and absurdity in an effort to shepherd the audience through ridiculous yet reverent ways of drawing out their life experiences. \nThis month you and The Campfireball will take a journey through everyone’s favorite feeling: FAILURE. Mistakes! Totally Blowing it! Disasters! Errors in judgement\, coming up short\, missing the mark\, embarrassments\, actually trying and…NOT succeeding. What is life but a steady stumbling forward\, and on May 9th let’s try (and possibly fail) to find a way to rejoice in the biffing of it all. \nFeaturing special guests: \nMud Flap Monday \nThis improv duo of Gillian Bellinger and Matt Peikin will interview an audience member about failure using that as a springboard for a completely improvised performance. Along with several television screen credits\, Gillian Bellinger has been an improviser for 20+ years at The Second City\, The Annoyance\, IO West\, The Groundlings\, and Westside Comedy Theater. In Asheville\, she is the founder and Artistic Director of Misfit Improv & Acting School. Matt Peiken performed improv for more than 20 years in Minneapolis and Cincinnati before moving to Asheville in 2017 and joining the first resident troupe of the Asheville Improv Collective.

SUMMARY:Lonely Parrots Band @ AVL Salt Cave Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Lonely Parrots is a brand new folk-pop duo who are on tour and poppin’ by the Salt Cave for a fun outdoors show in our gardens. \nThursday May 9th 7:30-9:30 \nCheck out their sound here! \nMake a fun night out and join us for a session before the show starts! Bring a camping chair and/or a blanket to cozy up on under the stars for this magical evening in our Peace Gardens. You are welcome to bring snacks and drinks.\nLonely Parrots info: \nOne part Michael Martinez & one part Max Embers\, the two singer-songwriters have been\nmaking music and performing professionally for the past 8 years. Notable collaborations include the likes of Kelly Clarkson\, John Legend\, Ryan Tedder\, Naika & John Oates (to name a few). \nThey met in Boston at Berklee College of Music nearly a decade ago but only realized their\ncreative chemistry in the fall of 2022. What started as a sunset jam on the beach turned out to be the first of many songs\, the heart of which revolves around human connection\, the highs and lows of friendship and love\, as well as our beautiful planet and its incredible\, delicate nature. \nMoving seamlessly from haunting unison to soulful harmonies\, their sound often leaves\naudiences unsure of who is even singing which part. Unique and wonderful as their voices are on their own\, an entirely new and third voice is created when these songbirds sing together as Lonely Parrots – think Simon & Garfunkel\, but with a modern Coldplay twist! \nAfter a successful tour through the Pacific Northwest last year the duo is excited to start\nreleasing music this year! \nMichael & Max are also founders of the MORF initiative (Music On Regenerative Farms) which aims to bring concerts to sustainable farms and projects\, giving earth-conscious artists an opportunity to share their music in breathtaking outdoor settings and to raise awareness about the regenerative movement! \nBe sure to bring a camping chair and/or a blanket to cozy up on under the stars for this magical evening in our Peace Gardens. You are welcome to bring snacks and drinks as well.\nThursday May 9th 7:30 – 9:30\nSuggested donation $20
