SUMMARY:Palaces for the People: Guastavino's Great American Places
DESCRIPTION:From 1882 to 1943\, in 31 states and six countries\, Raphael Guastavino and his son created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings that met his criteria of health\, safety\, and beauty. Palaces for the People is an exhibition about his life and works. It is now open at Asheville Museum of History\, in the city where Guastavino completed his final projects. Unable to find a seat in the tiny Catholic church in Asheville\, he built his last great structure\, the St. Lawrence Basilica. In Asheville\, the exhibit will feature additional elements and artifacts highlighting Guastavino’s time in and around the city. The Exhibition is a co-operative venture of the Guastavino Alliance\, Christmount\, Swannanoa Valley Museum\, and St. Lawrence Basilica.

SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Sgt. Splendor
DESCRIPTION:Eric McFadden and Kate Vargas join forces for an intoxicating night of alt-funk\, desert rock\, and dirty blues\, May 15 at The Grey Eagle. \nBefore teaming up\, the duo behind Sgt. Splendor were already formidable solo artists\, Kate Vargas chalking up acclaim at outlets like NPR\, SPIN\, and Vice (including praise from the “Dean of American Rock Critics” Robert Christgau); and Eric McFadden amassing an impressive resume including stints on guitar with George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars\, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore\, and Eric Burdon & The Animals\, plus a slew of solo albums\, and session work with everyone from Jackson Browne to The Clash’s Joe Strummer. \nSgt. Splendor’s intoxicating chemistry has its roots not just in enduring friendships\, but also in the love and connection of its creative partners\, Vargas and McFadden. After circling each other’s orbits for a time\, they finally met at a songwriting retreat hosted by Pat MacDonald (of Timbuk 3 / “Future’s So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades” fame) in Sturgeon Bay\, WI\, initially bonding over yet another parallel\, a New Mexico upbringing. Their Southwestern roots come through with Sgt. Splendor—combining mysterioso desert and carnivalesque Waits-ian vibe.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Thursday\, May 16th from 9am to 12pm at the Old Fort Picnic Area in Pisgah National Forest\, located at 2415 State Rd 1400\, Old Fort\, NC 28762. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHowever\, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional.

SUMMARY:Comedy at Catawba: Harrison Tweed
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday Modelface Comedy brings you the best comedians from all over the country. This week we have Harrison Tweed from NYC! \nHarrison Tweed is a standup comedian\, writer\, actor\, and podcaster. He’s mostly known as the co-host of “Let’s Talk About Sets!” comedy podcast. On his podcast\, he and host Jeff McBride dissect the standup material of some of the best comics in the United States and break it down with the comedian themselves. \nAs a comedian he’s been featured in NC’s Funniest Competition\, New York Comedy Festival\, and the ABC Network Comedy Showcase. His goofy disposition and charismatic charm is the key to allowing his outlandish (gross and stupid) takes on society to go down smoothly and with big belly laughs. \nEven though Harrison began his comedy career in New York City\, he left during the pandemic to live in his hometown of Durham\, North Carolina. He currently performs all over the country and runs a monthly comedy show at Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub where he brings local and nationally touring comedians down to Durham to make some strangers laugh.\nFollow him on Twitter\, Instagram\, and Tok Tok @TweedyJokes on all platforms. \nfeaturing Kenyon Adamcik \nages 18+\nDoors at 6:30pm\, show at 7pm \nTickets $15 advance\, $18
