SUMMARY:Palaces for the People: Guastavino's Great American Places
DESCRIPTION:From 1882 to 1943\, in 31 states and six countries\, Raphael Guastavino and his son created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings that met his criteria of health\, safety\, and beauty. Palaces for the People is an exhibition about his life and works. It is now open at Asheville Museum of History\, in the city where Guastavino completed his final projects. Unable to find a seat in the tiny Catholic church in Asheville\, he built his last great structure\, the St. Lawrence Basilica. In Asheville\, the exhibit will feature additional elements and artifacts highlighting Guastavino’s time in and around the city. The Exhibition is a co-operative venture of the Guastavino Alliance\, Christmount\, Swannanoa Valley Museum\, and St. Lawrence Basilica.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the legacy of Lambert Wilson\, a passionate collector of contemporary Native American art who encountered a beloved Cherokee sculpture as a student at Western Carolina University and decided to devote his life to supporting and encouraging Native artists. Wilson amassed an extensive collection during his lifetime\, focusing primarily on artists of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians\, Cherokee Nation\, and sovereign nations of the Southwest. DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. SUMMARY:Hemlock Hike at Strawberry Gap Trail with Conserving Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, May 18th at 10:00 am for an educational hemlock hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Conserving Carolina at Strawberry Gap Trail near Gerton\, NC. The hike is out and back\, about 2.5 miles total round-trip. Please note that the first half will be very steep. There will be an elevation gain of almost 725 feet over the first 1.3 miles before descending back down to the parking lot for the last half of the hike. This hike may be challenging\, but the view at the top and the hemlocks along the way will make it well worth your while! \nThe route will climb to the top of Ferguson peak where we will see a beautiful stand of Carolina hemlocks. Along the way\, we will traverse through the middle of an eastern hemlock stand. It is a very special opportunity to be able to see both a Carolina hemlock stand and an eastern hemlock stand in the same day! We will cover the ecological importance of both species\, what is threatening both species\, what is being done about it\, and more. \nConserving Carolina AmeriCorps Project Conserve Trails Associate\, Emma LaValley\, will join to discuss the trail\, the history of the property it goes through\, and how Conserving Carolina is connected to trails and preserves around Western North Carolina.  \nWe’ll depart from the Strawberry Gap Trailhead. More information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering. On Sunday\, May 19\, 2024\, “Empty Bowls\,” a community meal benefiting the Flat Rock Backpack Program\, will take place inside the Parish Hall at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness.   \nAdvance tickets are recommended for the two seatings: 12:00pm-2:00pm and 4:00pm-6:00pm.  Each ticket includes one hand-crafted bowl donated by area potters\, a soup-based meal\, with soups and breads donated by local restaurants and bakers\, plus homemade cookies baked by church members.  For those wishing to eat at home\, take-away is an available option.  \nTickets are $30 per person or $50 for a family of two adults and children under 12. The chamber music program will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Wilderness Room of the Parish House complex\, located at 1905 Greenville Hwy. \nKate Steinbeck is recognized across the U.S. and in Europe as a unique interpreter of a wide-ranging repertoire\, an innovative producer and collaborator\, as well as an enthusiastic teacher/ coach. Presented by Music Movie Mondays\, and sponsored by 103.3 Asheville FM. \n🎛️ On Wednesday\, May 22 at 7pm\, at the newly reopened Sly Grog Lounge\, Negativland will perform their live show We Can Really Feel Like We’re Here\, accompanied by SUE-C’s unique and immersive visuals. This is the latest audio-visual collaboration between Negativland and “real-time cinema” visual artist SUE-C\, and it’s about the evolving forms of media and technology that orchestrate our perceptions as we head onto our next election.  \nIf you’re under forty-five years of age\, there’s a good chance that you reference stories and life-lessons from video games more often than you do lines from films. Today’s generation gap comes in part from a schism of media consumption habits that occurred three decades ago\, when gaming outpaced cinema and television as the state-of-the-art for narrative storytelling. Not only are the stories being told different — the way in which they are being told say different things about human agency\, and the rules that govern the changing of the rules. \nPower holds the status quo in place by pitting those who oppose it against each other. But trust between us prisoners grows when one realizes that all sales are not final\, and that both sides have always been playing an Infinite Game. Mixing original materials and original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them\, Negativland re-arrange these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984)\, Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement. Their art and media interventions pose both serious and silly questions about the nature of sound\, media\, technology\, control\, ownership\, propaganda\, power\, and perception in the United States of America. Her evolution as a new media artist began in late-90s San Francisco where she was an influential member of the electronic music scene\, owning the experimental record label Orthlorng Musork\, organizing audio-visual cultural events and teaching the first creative coding classes in Max Software. After finishing her masters degree in engineering at UC Berkeley she moved to Oakland where she became co-owner of the Ego Park gallery and helped launch the First Friday art walks. \nHer performances blend cinema and technology into an organic\, improvisational and immersive act\, created from live cameras\, light pads and video algorithms. She has always pushed the boundaries of human-computer interaction\, employing emerging technologies and inventing many of her own\, both through performance and tinkering with hundreds of students in her well established teaching practice. She is currently a Video Designer at Meow Wolf.
