SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stand By For Failure Documentary screening + Negativland in-person discussion
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening plus Discussion with Negativland\nSponsored by Asheville FM \nAsheville-based author and music journalist Bill Kopp will be introducing the film and leading a moderated\, interactive discussion following the movie. \nTrailer: tinyurl.com/standbyforfailure\nSince childhood\, David “The Weatherman” Wills has recorded and reported on anything that grabs his attention. When he and friends Richard Lyons and Mark Hosler formed Negativland\, it soon became a collage of sounds and visuals\, both ordinary and extraordinary. The group’s work is so expansive and unique that it cannot help but push boundaries of sound\, media\, propaganda\, and perception. (Ryan Worsley\, US\, 2022\, 96m) \n“If you want to be inspired by individuals who dare to bust down the doors of art’s gatekeepers\, then STAND BY FOR FAILURE is the way to go.”\n— FILM THREAT \n🎛️ Along with the documentary\, Negativland will be performing LIVE at Sly Grog Lounge on Wednesday\, May 22\, with visuals produced and designed by artist SUE-C!\nTickets: https://tinyurl.com/wecanreallyfeel-asheville \n“Few artists have logged as many hours on the battlefield of fair use\, let alone questioned as persistently the associated legal constraints around intellectual property\, as Negativland\, whose sonic\, visual and performance appropriations and parodies have challenged eyeballs\, eardrums and moral standards alike since the late 1970s.”\n— THE WIRE \n“40+ years of Negativland metamedia\, recontextualized into popular feature length documentary entertainment format by Ryan Worsley. You’ve seen and heard it all! But you’ve never seen and heard it like this! ”\n— BOING BOING \n👉 About Bill Kopp:\nWith over 500 bylines in Western North Carolina publications (Mountain Xpress\, Bold Life\, WNC Magazine and more)\, Asheville-based author and music journalist is an acknowledged expert on popular music. Author of two books – Reinventing Pink Floyd: From Syd Barrett to The Dark Side of the Moon and Disturbing the Peace: 415 Records and the Rise of New Wave – Bill Kopp writes for publications across the country and abroad. A contributing editor at Goldmine Magazine and contributing writer at GRAMMY.com\, he has authored more than 30 album liner note essays and conducted more than 1000 interviews. He regularly hosts lecture/discussions on artists and albums of historical importance\, and is a frequent guest on music-focused radio programs and podcasts. \n👉 About Negativland:\n“An urgent show by Negativland and artist SUE-C calls time on a tech dystopia that is as malevolent as it is stupid… to meet the terrifying contemporary moment… as the world slides incrementally into meltdown.”\n– The Wire Magazine \n“Negativland have made a rewarding career out of being prodigious consumers of media who then digest it and recontextualize it\, emphasizing mediated reality’s crazy-making absurdity and the infinite malleability of perception and ‘truth.’”\n– Dave Segal\, The Stranger \n“Negativland are proud subverters of culture\, causing trouble while having fun.”\n– NPR Tiny Desk Concert

SUMMARY:Negativland + SUE-C: We Can Really Feel Like We're Here
DESCRIPTION:With opening acts Sleep Number and Kima Moore. \nNegativland + virtual SUE-C come to Asheville for the first time ever with a Special Multi-Venue/Multi-Day Double-Feature: a documentary about the group\, and a live multi-media performance! \n📽️ On Monday\, May 20 at 7pm\, the Grail Moviehouse in Asheville will be screening the new feature film Stand By For Failure: A Documentary About Negativland (from director Ryan Worsley) with members of Negativland in person for the Q and A. Presented by Music Movie Mondays\, and sponsored by 103.3 Asheville FM. \n🎛️ On Wednesday\, May 22 at 7pm\, at the newly reopened Sly Grog Lounge\, Negativland will perform their live show We Can Really Feel Like We’re Here\, accompanied by SUE-C’s unique and immersive visuals. This is the latest audio-visual collaboration between Negativland and “real-time cinema” visual artist SUE-C\, and it’s about the evolving forms of media and technology that orchestrate our perceptions as we head onto our next election. \nIf you’re under forty-five years of age\, there’s a good chance that you reference stories and life-lessons from video games more often than you do lines from films. Today’s generation gap comes in part from a schism of media consumption habits that occurred three decades ago\, when gaming outpaced cinema and television as the state-of-the-art for narrative storytelling. Not only are the stories being told different — the way in which they are being told say different things about human agency\, and the rules that govern the changing of the rules. \nPower holds the status quo in place by pitting those who oppose it against each other. But trust between us prisoners grows when one realizes that all sales are not final\, and that both sides have always been playing an Infinite Game. Join Negativland and the virtual SUE-C for a dangerous night of legacy audiovisual entertainment: We Can Really Feel Like We’re Here. \n“An urgent show by Negativland and artist SUE-C calls time on a tech dystopia that is as malevolent as it is stupid… to meet the terrifying contemporary moment… as the world slides incrementally into meltdown.” \n– The Wire Magazine \nNegativland + SUE-C on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert: https://tinyurl.com/negativland-sue-c-tinydesk \n👉 NEGATIVLAND \nSince 1980\, the multimedia collective known as Negativland have been creating records\, CDs\, video\, fine art\, books\, radio and live performance using appropriated sounds\, images\, objects\, and text. Mixing original materials and original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them\, Negativland re-arrange these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984)\, Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement. Their art and media interventions pose both serious and silly questions about the nature of sound\, media\, technology\, control\, ownership\, propaganda\, power\, and perception in the United States of America. Their work is now referenced and taught in many college courses in the US\, has been written about and cited in over 150 books and legal journals\, and they sometimes lecture about their work in the USA and in Europe. \n“Negativland have made a rewarding career out of being prodigious consumers of media who then digest it and recontextualize it\, emphasizing mediated reality’s crazy-making absurdity and the infinite malleability of perception and ‘truth.’” \n– Dave Segal\, The Stranger \n“Negativland are proud subverters of culture\, causing trouble while having fun.” \n– NPR Tiny Desk Concert \n👉 SUE-C \nSue Slagle (SUE-C) is an award-winning artist\, engineer and educator whose work in “real time cinema” presents a new\, imaginative perspective on live performance. Her evolution as a new media artist began in late-90s San Francisco where she was an influential member of the electronic music scene\, owning the experimental record label Orthlorng Musork\, organizing audio-visual cultural events and teaching the first creative coding classes in Max Software. After finishing her masters degree in engineering at UC Berkeley she moved to Oakland where she became co-owner of the Ego Park gallery and helped launch the First Friday art walks. \nHer performances blend cinema and technology into an organic\, improvisational and immersive act\, created from live cameras\, light pads and video algorithms. She has always pushed the boundaries of human-computer interaction\, employing emerging technologies and inventing many of her own\, both through performance and tinkering with hundreds of students in her well established teaching practice. She is currently a Video Designer at Meow Wolf.

SUMMARY:Dirty Logic at Sound Effects Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Asheville Music School Presents: Sound Effects Benefit Concert with music by Dirty Logic and Minør! This is an all-ages event\, and kids 7 and under get in FREE! Minors must be accompanied by guardian at all times. \nNow in its tenth year\, Sound Effects is Asheville Music School’s primary fundraising event. This year\, we are bringing the country’s premier Steely Dan Tribute Band\, Dirty Logic to the outdoor stage at Salvage Station. AMS band Minør opens the show. \nOur goal is to raise $35\,000 to support AMS operations and the Paul Thorpe Music Education Fund\, which funds the scholarship and outreach programs. \nAsheville Music School (AMS) is strengthening communities through music education and outreach\, while sustaining teachers and musicians in a vibrant music culture. Its 35+ music educators conduct private lessons in a wide variety of music styles and instruments for students of all ages and abilities. AMS also offers ensemble classes\, summer camps\, group classes\, master classes and workshops in a supportive family-friendly environment. \nSince its inception as a nonprofit\, AMS has awarded more than $100\,000 in need-based scholarships to those unable to afford private music lessons. All proceeds from this event will be used to help AMS continue and expand its free performances and group music classes for underserved communities\, veterans\, seniors\, the homeless\, people in recovery and those living with disabilities through its Sound Education outreach program.
