SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p

SUMMARY:PERFORMANCE: Gordon Beeferman + Stephanie Griffin
DESCRIPTION:Performance: Gordon Beeferman (piano) and Stephanie Griffin (viola)\nThursday\, June 27\, 2024 at 7pm\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street}\nTICKETS – $15 General Admission / $10 BMCM+AC members + Students w/ID \nComposer/performers Gordon Beeferman (piano) and Stephanie Griffin (viola) present an eclectic program of contemporary solo and duo music that often blurs the boundaries between composed and improvised traditions and practices. \nThe program includes Tunnel Visions\, Beeferman’s sprawling four-movement duo written for Griffin. Jumping off from their shared work in Beeferman’s avant-jazz Other Life Forms quartet\, the piece is a harrowing and rhythmically rigorous journey through microtonal\, cinematic landscapes. The program also includes Morton Feldman’s The Viola in My Life (3). Feldman was instrumental in the development of indeterminacy in music\, a groundbreaking concept associated with the experimental New York School of composers\, including John Cage\, Christian Wolff\, Earle Brown\, and David Tudor. \nAbout Gordon Beeferman: \nComposer and pianist/organist Gordon Beeferman\, “a wide-eyed polymath who masterfully toes the lines of myriad genres” (Brooklyn Rail)\, has created and performed innovative opera\, chamber and orchestral music\, avant-jazz\, and numerous collaborations with choreographers\, writers\, and other artists in New York and internationally. His music has been performed by the ensembles such as New York City Opera\, Albany Symphony\, Momenta Quartet\, American Brass Quintet\, eighth blackbird\, California EAR Unit\, Collage\, and Talea Ensemble\, and remarkable soloists like sopranos Sharon Harms and Alice Teyssier\, bassoonist Peter Kolkay\, pianist Steve Beck\, and violinist/vocalist Eden MacAdam-Somer. \nGordon Beeferman – The Stardust Reunion Band with Everett Bradley\, Nicki Richards\, Keith Fluitt (Voices); Joel Harrison (Guitar and Voice); Gordon Beeferman (Piano); Chulo Gatewood (Bass); Tony Lewis (Drums); Andy Clausen (Trombones); Dave Smith (Trumpet); Ben Kono\, Stacey Dillard\, Lisa Parrot (Woodwinds) at Joel Harrison’s New Works – Roulette 01-26-23\nHis chamber opera The Rat Land\, written with librettist Charlotte Jackson\, was praised as “complex and daringly modern…gritty\, fidgety and intriguing” by The New York Times. Scenes from their second collaboration\, The Enchanted Organ: A Porn Opera have been performed to sold-out downtown theater and nightclub audiences. They are working on their third opera\, The Ninth Floor\, with support from the MAP Fund. \nA bandleader as well as composer\, Beeferman has led his own ensembles\, including the septet Music for an Imaginary Band\, the quartet Other Life Forms\, and a quintet of Hamburg-based musicians on tour in Germany. Current groups include his Organ Trio (with Kate Gentile\, drums\, and Anders Nilsson\, guitar)\, and Zero Gravity\, a poly-stylistic song project. Beeferman has performed with numerous improvisers\, ensembles\, singers\, and theatrical productions at venues from the Coney Island Museum to the Berlin Festspielhaus\, with a range of musicians including avant-garde vocal legend Shelley Hirsch\, playwright/performance artist Taylor Mac\, and the Philip Glass Ensemble. His ongoing collaborations include concerts with singer-songwriter Carol Lipnik\, and a new duet with dancer Susan Hefner. \nWell-regarded for his compositions\, Beeferman has received commissioning grants from the Fromm Foundation\, Concert Artists Guild\, and the BMI Foundation\, among others. He has been awarded residencies at the MacDowell Colony\, Yaddo\, the Copland House\, and Ucross\, and a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. His recordings are available on a host of labels including Summit\, Minor Amusements\, Different Track\, Innova\, Generate\, Clang\, and OutNow. \nAbout Stephanie Griffin: \nStephanie Griffin is an innovative violist and composer with a unique and eclectic musical vision. Born in Canada and based in New York City\, her musical adventures have taken her to Indonesia\, Singapore\, Japan\, Hong Kong\, England\, Ireland\, Germany\, Belgium\, Mexico and Mongolia. From large concert halls to the sand dunes of the Gobi desert\, she has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in classical\, contemporary and improvisational contexts. As a soloist\, she has worked closely with numerous composers\, among them Salvatore Sciarrino; Tristan Murail; Tony Prabowo; Kee Yong Chong; Ursula Mamlok; Matthew Greenbaum; and Arthur Kampela. \nA founding member of the Momenta Quartet\, she has given over 200 chamber concerts at such esteemed venues as the Library of Congress and the National Gallery in Washington\, DC and led residencies at major American institutes of higher education\, among them Cornell and New York Universities and the Eastman School of Music. Ms. Griffin performs regularly with the New York contemporary music institution\, Continuum\, now in its 50th year\, and has given American premieres of major works by leading European composers\, among them Georg Friedrich Haas and Michael Jarrell\, as a member of the Argento Chamber Ensemble. From 1998 through 2002\, she was Executive Director of the contemporary music series at Galapagos Art and Performance Space. \nAs a composer\, Stephanie is the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Emerging Composer and Sound Artist Fellowship from the Jerome Foundation\, and the 2016 composition fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. As an improviser\, Stephanie was a 2014 fellow at Music Omi\, and is a member of Carl Maguire’s Floriculture\, Gordon Beeferman’s Other Life Forms\, Hans Tammen’s Third Eye Orchestra\, Adam Rudolph’s Go: Organic Orchestra and the composer/improviser collective the Brooklyn Infinity Orchestra. She worked closely with the late Butch Morris from 2001 until shortly before his death in 2013\, and was the only non-Indonesian member of Tony Prabowo’s New Jakarta Ensemble\, creating avant-garde compositions alongside traditional musicians from Sumatra. \nMs. Griffin serves as principal violist of the Princeton Symphony\, and is the Executive Director of Associated Chamber Music Players (ACMP). She studied viola with William Gordon in Vancouver\, Paul DeClerck in Brussels and Wayne Brooks at Rice University in Houston\, and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School where she studied with Juilliard Quartet violist Samuel Rhodes. Stephanie’s varied viola sounds can be heard on a diverse array of classical\, new music\, jazz and world music labels\, among them Tzadik\, Innova\, Naxos\, Aeon\, Centaur\, Aksara\, Firehouse 12\, and New World\, Albany\, and Aeon records. \nLearn More: https://www.blackmountaincollege.org/gordon-beeferman-stephanie-griffin/

SUMMARY:Mabilene + Sara Jean Kelley
DESCRIPTION:Country artist Mabilene takes the Citizen Vinyl stage on Thursday\, June 27. Doors at 7 p.m.\, show at 8 p.m. Sara Jean Kelly opens. $12 advance / $15 at the door. \nA soulful siren born and raised in Houston\, Texas\, Mabilene grew up surrounded by country and top 40 pop music. Her parents’ record collection served as an introduction to the legends she now cites as influences: Linda Ronstadt\, Dolly Parton\, and Emmylou Harris. \nWritten primarily while settling into her living room couch\, the songs on Liminal were born out of a desire to recenter love and compassion in collective unconscious. As Mabilene puts it\, “I’ve spent a lot of time meditating on the forces that keep us isolated and divided. These songs really look at moving through dark spaces both collectively and personally. We’ve become so incredibly fast paced\, and a ton of the music we consume keeps us there – activated and amped up. I’ve often been told that my songs offer people an opportunity to slow down\, breath and deeply listen. I just hope we can all try and look at the difficult and painful with the open heart of someone who is in the vulnerable space of seeking. And in the end\, trusting love to be our guiding force.”

SUMMARY:The Feast of St. John: Celebrating Henderson County
DESCRIPTION:FLAT ROCK\, N.C. Once again The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness celebrates its patron saint with the Feast of St. John the Baptist. In 2021\, the historic church extended the festivities outside the parish to the broader community and since then continues the tradition. \nThe fourth annual celebration will be held from 5 – 8 p.m. on Sunday\, June 30\, 2024 at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse\, located behind Little Rainbow Row at 2724 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. The rain location is set for the Parish Hall of St. John in the Wilderness at 1905 Greenville Highway. \nAll are welcome to join the festivities at the family-friendly celebration featuring food\, fellowship and live music with the return of North Carolina’s Chatham Rabbits. Music begins at 6pm but guests should arrive early to get their food order in and find a seat. Yard games will be offered for children. Barbecue and other family-favorite foods and beverages will be available for purchase at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse. Seating at the picturesque outdoor courtyard is limited\, so guests are encouraged to bring portable chairs. \nProceeds from the Feast will benefit the Community Food Pantry in Edneyville. Admission is free but donations are encouraged from attendees. Chatham Rabbits and St. John in the Wilderness are teaming up to match donations up to $2\,000. \n“The Feast of St. John has become a wonderful way to celebrate Flat Rock and the surrounding community each year. Our parishioners\, like many of you\, feel incredibly fortunate to live in this beautiful place\,” said Reverend Josh Stephens\, Rector. “We also are fortunate to have each other as neighbors and friends so we hope you will join us to celebrate our many blessings. This year\, we are especially pleased that monetary donations at the concert will benefit the Edneyville Community Food Pantry\, which is an amazing organization serving hundreds of food insecure people in Henderson County each month.” \nThe Feast of St. John is made possible by the Endowment of St. John in the Wilderness and the generosity of its parishioners.
