SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p

SUMMARY:The Feast of St. John: Celebrating Henderson County
DESCRIPTION:FLAT ROCK\, N.C. Once again The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness celebrates its patron saint with the Feast of St. John the Baptist. In 2021\, the historic church extended the festivities outside the parish to the broader community and since then continues the tradition. \nThe fourth annual celebration will be held from 5 – 8 p.m. on Sunday\, June 30\, 2024 at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse\, located behind Little Rainbow Row at 2724 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. The rain location is set for the Parish Hall of St. John in the Wilderness at 1905 Greenville Highway. \nAll are welcome to join the festivities at the family-friendly celebration featuring food\, fellowship and live music with the return of North Carolina’s Chatham Rabbits. Music begins at 6pm but guests should arrive early to get their food order in and find a seat. Yard games will be offered for children. Barbecue and other family-favorite foods and beverages will be available for purchase at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse. Seating at the picturesque outdoor courtyard is limited\, so guests are encouraged to bring portable chairs. \nProceeds from the Feast will benefit the Community Food Pantry in Edneyville. Admission is free but donations are encouraged from attendees. Chatham Rabbits and St. John in the Wilderness are teaming up to match donations up to $2\,000. \n“The Feast of St. John has become a wonderful way to celebrate Flat Rock and the surrounding community each year. Our parishioners\, like many of you\, feel incredibly fortunate to live in this beautiful place\,” said Reverend Josh Stephens\, Rector. “We also are fortunate to have each other as neighbors and friends so we hope you will join us to celebrate our many blessings. This year\, we are especially pleased that monetary donations at the concert will benefit the Edneyville Community Food Pantry\, which is an amazing organization serving hundreds of food insecure people in Henderson County each month.” \nThe Feast of St. John is made possible by the Endowment of St. John in the Wilderness and the generosity of its parishioners. For more information\, visit www.stjohnflatrock.org or call 828-693-9783.

SUMMARY:SCYTHIAN at The Grey Eagle
DESCRIPTION:Washington DC-based Scythian (sith-ee-yin) began over 12 years ago as a bunch of college buddies playing Celtic music in the streets and has grown to be a headliner on the US Celtic Festival Circuit as well as a name in the Bluegrass/Americana Festival Circuit. They found that their brand of high-energy folk music found a resonance that led The Washington Post to state: “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious\, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing\, jumping around or hoisting glasses.” \nFor over 12 years they have found success as an independent band and have played over 1\,300 shows all over the united states\, Europe\, Canada and as far aways as Australia. See them live in Asheville’s longest-running music venue.
