SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Randy Shull: Black & White"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are Wed – Sat 11am-5pm \nTracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Black & White\, an exhibition of new large-scale\, abstract work by artist Randy Shull. This is Shull’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. An opening reception for the Artist is scheduled for Friday\, August 9 from 6-8PM.\n \nShull has the unique ability to evoke both gravity and weightlessness within a single artwork\, pouring thick layers of paint around the loose weave of handmade hammocks\, a material that he has been incorporating in his work for several years. Hammocks are core to life in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico where Shull has lived part-time for the past 18 years\, and where he maintains a studio in the historic center of Mérida. If art and hammocks are the vehicles of dreams\, Shull’s work carves a path into the subconscious. \nAs objects\, hammocks are extremely strong and malleable\, with a rich cultural history. Shull at once honors this craft and lineage while treating it irreverently\, exploring the boundaries of what a painting can be with tireless experimentation. In these heavily textured almost muscular works\, Shull subverts the very notion of a painting\, reversing the usual role of canvas and paint. Using paint as a binder to hold the hammocks together\, he creates a radical new material that is culled from the histories of art and craft while decidedly pointing towards their futures. \nThe natural sagging and draping that occurs in these works lends a tapestry-like aesthetic\, and upon looking we become suddenly viscerally aware of the weight of our bodies. Simultaneously\, Shull’s use of vibrant colors\, earth tones\, and rough surfaces and edges allows us to revel in the simple pleasures of materiality and light. \nThe title of the exhibition is in part a nod toward contemporary life in the polarized U.S. and is in line with Shull’s interest in pairs\, contrasts\, and the spaces between; many of the works on view are subtly divided into two panels. \nIn addition to paintings\, the exhibition will include some sculptural and video elements that illustrate Shull’s investigation\, in the extreme\, of the capacity and capability of the hammock. \nRandy Shull lives and works in Asheville\, NC and Mérida\, Mexico. He received his BFA in Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology\, NY in 1986. He is the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship and a NEA Southern Arts Federation grant. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum\, NY; The High Museum of Art\, GA; The Renwick Museum of American Art\, Washington\, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft + Design\, NC; Racine Museum of Art\, WI; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design\, NC; Museum of Art and Design\, NY\, Black Mountain College Museum\, NC; The Asheville Art Museum\, NC; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, LA; The Mobile Museum of Art\, AL\, and numerous corporate collections including Fidelity\, Wells Fargo\, Piedmont Natural Gas\, Duke Hospital\, and Wortham Center for the Performing Arts\, among others.

DESCRIPTION:Asheville’s acclaimed global-jazz duo\, Free Planet Radio\, will perform live at the newly relaunched White Horse Black Mountain\, on the afternoon of Sunday\, September 8th\, 2024\, joined by virtuosic multi-instrumentalist\, Adam Maalouf\, and classically trained Bharatanatyam dancer and innovative movement artist\, Aparna Keshaviah. \nFree Planet Radio is a dynamic and genre-defying band that blends elements of jazz\, world music\, and improvisation into a gorgeous and exciting musical experience. Comprising of world-renowned musicians\, River Guerguerian on percussion and Chris Rosser on piano and multi-instruments\, they are known for their rich and textured soundscapes\, intricate rhythms\, and virtuosic instrumentation. The band’s aim is always to transport listeners on a captivating journey while “exploring the infinite and seamless relationships between musical cultures through the universal language of sound.” \nOriginally a trio with twice Grammy-Award winning bass player\, Eliot Wadopian\, who passed away in 2021\, Free Planet Radio continues to create and thrive as a duo. With their extensive catalog of songs and new influences garnered from each collaboration\, every performance is a wholly unique experience of musical exploration and improvisational brilliance that will wow you! \nThe upcoming concert on September 8th at the legendary White Horse Black Mountain will include both new and longtime-favorite original compositions by Free Planet Radio\, joined on most pieces by virtuosic multi-instrumentalist\, Adam Maalouf\, who will also share songs from his extensive personal catalog. Adam Maalouf\, who has been featured on prestigious stages around the world and studied with some of the greatest Master musicians alive\, has been collaborating with River Guerguerian and Chris Rosser for over a dozen years whenever circumstances allow. On select pieces throughout the performance\, their music will also be graced with extra dazzle by the talented Aparna Keshaviah\, a dancer with extraordinarily agile and elegant movement and musical awareness. Aparna Keshaviah is an American-born daughter of south Indian immigrants and grew up training in the ancient artform of Bharatanatyam as well as contemporary Western modalities of movement. As a movement artist\, she celebrates both her family’s ancestral roots and her experience as an American through hybridization and innovation.

Combining folk-infused vocal melodies and evocative lyrics that capture the unfiltered human experience\, She Returns From War is taking her seat in the Americana music world with grace\, strength\, and passion. In 2023\, the project shows no signs of slowing down. From opening for Bernie Sanders at his presidential rally in Charleston\, to performing at national festivals like Stagecoach and High Water Festival and with artists such as Pat Benatar\, Band of Horses\, and Nikki Lane\, She Returns From War is sharing with the world what the modern south should look and feel like: inclusive\, compassionate\, unfiltered\, and loving. \nKnown for her lengthy tenure touring and busking with beloved New Orleans jazz band Tuba Skinny\, prolific songwriter and singer Erika Lewis has been churning out American originals all her own for the past several years. From classic country to cosmic Americana to dreamy indie folk\, Lewis continues to dip her toes more deeply into an ever-expanding pool of roots music styles. Her latest album\, A Walk Around the Sun brings Lewis’ solo work out from the wings to center stage\, beneath a spotlight nearly impossible to ignore.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Ginny Ruffner Reforestation of the Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination\, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.
