SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Randy Shull: Black & White"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are Wed – Sat 11am-5pm \nTracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Black & White\, an exhibition of new large-scale\, abstract work by artist Randy Shull. This is Shull’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. An opening reception for the Artist is scheduled for Friday\, August 9 from 6-8PM.\n \nShull has the unique ability to evoke both gravity and weightlessness within a single artwork\, pouring thick layers of paint around the loose weave of handmade hammocks\, a material that he has been incorporating in his work for several years. Hammocks are core to life in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico where Shull has lived part-time for the past 18 years\, and where he maintains a studio in the historic center of Mérida. If art and hammocks are the vehicles of dreams\, Shull’s work carves a path into the subconscious. \nAs objects\, hammocks are extremely strong and malleable\, with a rich cultural history. Shull at once honors this craft and lineage while treating it irreverently\, exploring the boundaries of what a painting can be with tireless experimentation. In these heavily textured almost muscular works\, Shull subverts the very notion of a painting\, reversing the usual role of canvas and paint. Using paint as a binder to hold the hammocks together\, he creates a radical new material that is culled from the histories of art and craft while decidedly pointing towards their futures. \nThe natural sagging and draping that occurs in these works lends a tapestry-like aesthetic\, and upon looking we become suddenly viscerally aware of the weight of our bodies. Simultaneously\, Shull’s use of vibrant colors\, earth tones\, and rough surfaces and edges allows us to revel in the simple pleasures of materiality and light. \nThe title of the exhibition is in part a nod toward contemporary life in the polarized U.S. and is in line with Shull’s interest in pairs\, contrasts\, and the spaces between; many of the works on view are subtly divided into two panels. \nIn addition to paintings\, the exhibition will include some sculptural and video elements that illustrate Shull’s investigation\, in the extreme\, of the capacity and capability of the hammock. \nRandy Shull lives and works in Asheville\, NC and Mérida\, Mexico. He received his BFA in Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology\, NY in 1986. He is the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship and a NEA Southern Arts Federation grant. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum\, NY; The High Museum of Art\, GA; The Renwick Museum of American Art\, Washington\, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft + Design\, NC; Racine Museum of Art\, WI; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design\, NC; Museum of Art and Design\, NY\, Black Mountain College Museum\, NC; The Asheville Art Museum\, NC; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, LA; The Mobile Museum of Art\, AL\, and numerous corporate collections including Fidelity\, Wells Fargo\, Piedmont Natural Gas\, Duke Hospital\, and Wortham Center for the Performing Arts\, among others.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Ginny Ruffner Reforestation of the Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination\, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Beloved Community Garden Celebrates 20 Years of Growing\, Sharing\, Educating
DESCRIPTION:Join the passionate gardeners and volunteers of the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden on September 22nd from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for the garden’s 20th Anniversary Celebration! The evening will include an original play created and performed by community members; live music; a delicious dinner prepared by local restaurants and gardeners\, and a cash bar. Tickets are $40 in advance\, $50 at the door. Student (college and grade school) tickets $25. Children 6 years and under are free. A silent auction will offer local adventures\, activities\, and services that will enrich your year spiritually\, mentally\, and physically\, and you can test your luck on three unique raffle baskets. \nThe original play will be this event’s crown jewel. With the help of local community theater playwright and director Jerry Pope\, the garden’s community has woven a tapestry of stories from a myriad of voices. The resulting compilation of memories is sure to make you laugh\, cry\, and reminisce! These stories touch the humanity in all of us and the endless connections that we have with the universe around us. \nThe goal for the 20th Anniversary Celebration is to raise $20\,000! Proceeds from this event provide financial support for the garden’s interns so that they can focus on learning good growing techniques and in-turn share that knowledge with others and give back to the community. Proceeds also allow the garden to bring in excellent educators for workshops to educate the community about gardening\, native and medicinal plants\, and more. The rest of the revenue will be set aside as seed money for a new structure to replace the current barn. The community hopes that the new structure can include processing capabilities\, educational space\, cold storage\, and an office for the full-time garden manager. Additional donations are enthusiastically welcomed to help realize this vision! \nProviding food for hundreds of local families\, the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden is a vital resource in helping reduce food insecurity in the Swannanoa Valley. Each year\, residents and volunteers come together to grow fresh produce that is distributed to families in need. The garden relies heavily on the work of interns to assist in the growing process and to educate the public on sustainable growing techniques. This fundraiser serves as one of the best opportunities for the community to come together and learn about the purpose and benefits of the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden. This event is also one of the best ways to support the community garden and keep it up and running for years to come. \nIn addition to growing produce for the community and providing space for residents to garden\, the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden tends dozens of fruit and nut trees\, grows many native and medicinal plants\, helps to maintain greenways\, operates a composting station for the Town\, and supports a full-time garden manager position. \nFor more information about this year’s event or to purchase tickets visit the event website at https://bmtcommunitygardens.org/20th-anniversary-celebration/.\nTo get involved\, please contact Lucille Nelson at lucille.nelson@tobm.org.\nFor information about donations and sponsorships please reach out to info@bmtcommunitygardens.org
