DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Give your yards and gardens a little local love with our Fall ONLINE Native Shrub & Plant Sale (with pick-ups in Asheville\, NC). Choose from several native perennial species and shrubs\, including azaleas\, ornamental native plants\, pollinator species\, and those particularly beneficial to wildlife. All plants are sourced locally from Carolina Native Nursery. We anticipate some items selling out quickly so don’t wait to place your order! \nOrders will be accepted online from October 1-31st\, while supplies last. You must pay for the order at the time you submit it in order to secure your species and size of choice. Then\, pick up your order in Asheville\, NC on Tuesday\, November 19th from 3-6 pm. DESCRIPTION:Cast Iron was formed in 2019 from the rich acoustic music scene around the Asheville area. Mandolin player Nick Dauphinais\, a New Hampshire native\, has played with Mountain Faith and the Larry Stephenson Band. Andrew Blythe\, on banjo\, grew up in Etowah\, North Carolina and participated in the bluegrass program while attending East Tennessee State University. He later joined the western North Carolina bluegrass band Blue Wheel Drive. Guitar player Rob Sine\, from Fairmont\, West Virginia\, also played with Blue Wheel Drive before joining Cast Iron. Celia Millington-Wyckoff\, on bass\, played with the central Pennsylvania bluegrass band Whetstone Run in the mid-70s\, and retired to the Asheville area in order to have more opportunities to play. \nOctober 5th  • 7pm \nTickets $20

Doors at 6 p.m. and event at 7 p.m. FREE with RSVP. \nTerry Roberts is the author of five celebrated novels: A Short Time to Stay Here\, That Bright Land\, The Holy Ghost Speakeasy and Revival\, My Mistress’ Eyes are Raven Black\, and The Sky Club. His books have received numerous awards\, including the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award\, the James Still Award for Writing About the Appalachian South\, the Willie Morris Prize for Southern Fiction\, and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction. Roberts is a Western North Carolina native\, as well as a lifelong teacher and educational reformer. He directs the National Paideia Center and lives in Asheville with his wife\, Lynn. \nDenise Kiernan is an author\, journalist\, producer\, and host of “CRAFT: Authors in Conversation.” Her young reader’s book\, We Gather Together: Stories of Thanksgiving from then to now\, arrived September 2023\, and is a companion title to the popular adult nonfiction book\, We Gather Together\, and children’s picture book\, Giving Thanks. Her book The Last Castle was an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. She is also the author of The Girls of Atomic City\, which is a New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and NPR bestseller. She lives in North Carolina.
