DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Give your yards and gardens a little local love with our Fall ONLINE Native Shrub & Plant Sale (with pick-ups in Asheville\, NC). Choose from several native perennial species and shrubs\, including azaleas\, ornamental native plants\, pollinator species\, and those particularly beneficial to wildlife. All plants are sourced locally from Carolina Native Nursery. We anticipate some items selling out quickly so don’t wait to place your order! \nOrders will be accepted online from October 1-31st\, while supplies last. You must pay for the order at the time you submit it in order to secure your species and size of choice. Then\, pick up your order in Asheville\, NC on Tuesday\, November 19th from 3-6 pm. His books have received numerous awards\, including the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award\, the James Still Award for Writing About the Appalachian South\, the Willie Morris Prize for Southern Fiction\, and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction. Roberts is a Western North Carolina native\, as well as a lifelong teacher and educational reformer. He directs the National Paideia Center and lives in Asheville with his wife\, Lynn. \nDenise Kiernan is an author\, journalist\, producer\, and host of “CRAFT: Authors in Conversation.” Her young reader’s book\, We Gather Together: Stories of Thanksgiving from then to now\, arrived September 2023\, and is a companion title to the popular adult nonfiction book\, We Gather Together\, and children’s picture book\, Giving Thanks. Her book The Last Castle was an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. She is also the author of The Girls of Atomic City\, which is a New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, and NPR bestseller. She lives in North Carolina.

DESCRIPTION:Join Pisgah Legal Services’ most significant event of the year—a night dedicated to social justice\, equity\, and collective action. \nPisgah Legal’s 14th Annual Justice Forum will be held at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in downtown Asheville on Thursday\, October 10th. There will be a ticketed\, pre-event reception at 5:30pm followed by the free Justice Forum at 7:00pm. A live-streaming option will be available for those that prefer to join virtually.  \nWe host this event each year to call for justice and to generate honest conversation about pressing local and national issues. This year’s Forum focuses on the lives of immigrants\, the national immigration picture\, and Pisgah Legal’s work supporting immigrant families. Pisgah Legal provides a broad array of free\, civil legal aid\, anti-poverty advocacy and access to health care in WNC. Our Justice For All Program team works with immigrants in WNC to help navigate complex immigration laws and apply for work authorization or permanent residency if eligible. \nWe are thrilled that this year’s keynote speaker is Marielena Hincapié\, a nationally respected leader and legal strategist in the social justice movement. Currently the Distinguished Immigration Scholar at Cornell University\, Marielena is the former executive director of the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund (IJF). She is a key figure in immigration policy\, leading transformative initiatives such as DACA and the #ImmigrantsAreEssential campaign. An immigrant from Colombia\, Marielena brings a bilingual and bicultural perspective to her work. DESCRIPTION:NYU’s Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika\, producer of award-winning “Uncivil” podcast\, to speak at Warren Wilson on “Police\, Podcasts\, and Politics”. \nChenjerai Kumanyika is an assistant professor in NYU’s Arthur L.Carter Journalism Institute. Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika specializes in using historically focused – narrative non-fiction audio journalism to critique the ideology of American myths about issues such as race\, the Civil War\, and policing. He has published in a variety of scholarly journals and public venues such as This American Life\, The Intercept\, NPR\, Transom\, and VICE. Kumanyika is also the co-creator\, co-executive producer and co-host of Uncivil\, Gimlet Media’s Peabody Award-winning podcast on the Civil War and he is the collaborator for Scene on Radio’s “Seeing White\,” series and Season 4 on the history of American democracy. Kumanyika’s work has been recognized with several prestigious honors including the George Foster Peabody Award (2018) for Uncivil and The Media Literate Media Award (NAMLE) for Scene on Radio (2021). In 2021\, he received the Union of Democratic Communications’ Dallas Smythe Award for his career accomplishments and advocacy.
