SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Ginny Ruffner Reforestation of the Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination\, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Exhibition themes will correspond to the chapters of co-curator David Silver’s book on this topic\, to be published in conjunction with the exhibition in partnership with Atelier Editions. \nCurated by David Silver and Bruce Johansen

MountainTrue staff and volunteers spend significant time and resources removing nonnative invasive plants along streams and lake shorelines to protect water quality and ensure that the native vegetation stays healthy. \n**Please note: several of these plants and shrubs may be “dormant” or cut back. This is normal and not a cause for concern. Here is an article explaining dormancy in plants. \nFor the full species descriptions or to sign up to receive an email notification when the sale goes live\, please visit the event page. \nPlants that are found here inspire a “sense of place” and pride in our mountain communities and promote wise stewardship and conservation of natural resources. SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Tuesday\, October 22nd from 1pm to 4pm at the NC Arboretum\, located at 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way\, Asheville\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHowever\, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \nThe program is free to the North Carolina Arboretum members\, but nonmembers will need to pay a $20 entrance fee. Registration is required. Please visit our website at savehemlocksnc.org/events/ to register.

SUMMARY:Misery
DESCRIPTION:True life becomes stranger than fiction when an acclaimed romance novelist wakes up in the home of his “number one fan.” Rescued from a wintery car crash\, Sheldon finds himself incapacitated and convalescing in the secluded home of Annie Wilkes\, a seemingly kind nurse. When events take a nightmarish turn\, the injured Paul realizes the unhinged Annie has no intention of letting him leave. This spine-tingling\, nail-biting stage adaptation traps you in the room with Paul as the story spins out of control. Based on Stephen King’s acclaimed\, best-selling novel\, the tense cat-and-mouse game will grip you until the end.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Work Day with the Forest Restoration Alliance
DESCRIPTION:—This event is STILL ON despite the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We hope that by continuing to provide this opportunity for some simple plant therapy and connection with each other\, this nature restoration-centered event may offer some reprieve from the daily realities so many of us have been experiencing.— \nJoin the Hemlock Restoration Initiative on Friday\, October 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as we lend a hand to our partners at the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA). Instead of chemically treating hemlock trees\, volunteers will be combating hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) by supporting the work of the FRA at their research facility in Waynesville\, where they are breeding HWA-resistant hemlock trees. \nVolunteers will complete tasks in FRA’s greenhouse and nursery to help with their selective breeding program. Volunteers will also get a tour of the facility by researcher Ben Smith and learn about their efforts to restore hemlocks. This is a great opportunity to help hemlocks without handling insecticide. \nPlease RSVP by emailing Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org by Tuesday\, October 22nd. Please include a contact phone number and email address when you sign up. These volunteer days fill up quickly\, so it’s a good idea to sign up soon to ensure your spot. \nMore information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering.
