SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Director: Victoria Lamberth \nApproximate Run Time: 2 hours\, 5 minutes\nRating: PG-13 due to adult language and situations. Conversations addressing prejudice\, racism\, and bigotry. \nA progressive white couple’s proud liberal sensibilities are tested when their daughter brings her black fiance home to meet them in this fresh and relevant stage adaptation of the iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Blindsided by their daughter’s whirlwind romance and fearful for her future\, Matt and Christina Drayton quickly realize the difference between supporting a mixed-race couple in your newspaper and welcoming one into your family–especially in 1967. But they’re surprised to find they aren’t the only ones concerned about the match\, and it’s only a short time before a multi-family clash of racial and generational difference sweeps across the Draytons’ idyllic San Francisco terrace. Will the love between young Joanna and John prevail? With humor and insight\, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner begins a conversation sure to continue at dinner tables long after the curtain comes down. \nThe cast of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner: \nKip Brown – Monsignor Ryan \nNatasha Charles* – Mary Prentice \nRixa Clark* – Joanna Drayton \nPamela Flasch* – Christina Drayton \nSarah Leatham – Hilary St. George \nRonnie Pepper – John Prentice\, Sr. \nDoug Sparks – Matt Drayton \nRowena Strong* – Tillie \nElijah York – Dr. John Prentice \n*Making their Hendersonville Theatre debut

SUMMARY:Comedy for Community supporting Helpmate
DESCRIPTION:Locals supporting locals is the heart of Asheville.\nComedy for Community brings all your favorite local comedians together each week at Catawba Brewing to support the town we love through a variety of local charities and organizations. This month we are supporting Helpmate!\nCome laugh and learn and support your neighbors. \nHelpmate began as a task force of the Buncombe County Commission on the Status of Women in 1978. Our mission and goals have been consistent ever since; to support survivors\, educate our community about healthy relationships and to create systems that are responsive to survivors’ needs. Helpmate was incorporated in 1981 and staffed by volunteer advocates who established a safe house network. Among our first volunteer advocates was former Representative Wilma Sherrill\, who was later instrumental in reforming NC’s domestic violence laws. \nOur emergency shelter program started with a small apartment in 1981 and a second apartment a year later. In 1985\, we bought a house and replaced with a larger home 5 years later. During this period\, Helpmate was instrumental in the formation of additional organizations serving local victims\, including the former Interlace transitional housing program and My Sister’s Place in Madison County. Helpmate became established as a statewide leader in the work to address violence against women\, and was among the first members of the NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence. \nIn 2006\, Helpmate launched a capital campaign to purchase our current emergency shelter\, which houses 225 adult and child victims who are in imminent danger each year. In the years since\, we have seen remarkable growth. We helped lead a systemic overhaul in 2013\, which helped survivors access Helpmate’s services in record numbers. Helpmate now serves 80% more victims\, answers triple the number of hotline calls and forms 5 times as many safety plans as we did in 2012. The most visible evidence of this collaboration is the Buncombe County Family Justice Center\, which co-locates advocates\, law enforcement\, prosecution\, child protection\, legal aid\, childcare and medical services into one safe location. We also now offer several collaborative evidence-based programs\, such as the Lethality Assessment Protocol\, in which law enforcement connects victims to our hotline immediately from crime scenes. We also offer Safe and Together\, a program with Child Protective Services to respond to co-occurring domestic violence and child maltreatment. \nWe believe in the power of prevention to save lives. Helpmate has worked with Our VOICE\, Mountain Child Advocacy Center\, Pisgah Legal Services\, and a community-based task force to implement the Pathways to Prevention Plan. The Plan is the first of its type in NC\, using CDC-endorsed strategies to prevent domestic violence\, sexual assault and child maltreatment. We aim to teach residents of Buncombe County how to form healthy relationships\, resolve conflicts without violence\, and respect boundaries so that we end the cycle of domestic violence. \nDoors: 6 PM\nShow: 6:30 PM\nTickets: $15.00\nPREMIUM SEATING: $20.00\nAges 16+\nDogs Welcome\nSEATED SHOW

SUMMARY:Film Screening: “Come Hell or High Water: Remembering the Great Flood of 1916\,”
DESCRIPTION:After the devastating events in late September of last year\, we thought it would be relevant to screen David Weintraub’s documentary “Come Hell or High Water: Remembering the Great Flood of 1916\,” and examine the parallels between now and then.\nJoin us here at the Memorial for a brief discussion preceding the 50-minute documentary as we highlight the Wolfe family’s memories of the 1916 flood and how it featured in Look Homeward\, Angel.\nView the trailer for the documentary here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKrhY_SUT_o\nIf you’d like to attend\, please call the Memorial at 828-253-8304\, or email Kayla Seay at kayla.seay@dncr.nc.gov to reserve a spot. Our capacity for this event is 45.\n**This is a free event\, however we are accepting cash donations to help upgrade our A/V equipment\, and we are also accepting food donations for our friends at 12 Baskets Café with the Asheville Poverty Initiative. If you are able to contribute\, 12 Baskets would greatly benefit from the donation of condiments (mayonnaise\, barbecue sauce\, ketchup\, ranch and other salad dressings)\, shelf stable coffee creamers\, and boxed goods like pasta and rice.
