SUMMARY:57th Annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Western Carolina University’s Annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition is one of the longest-running Catamount art traditions. This exhibition is an extraordinary opportunity for WCU undergraduate students to share their artwork with a larger public and to enhance their skills in presenting artwork in a professional gallery setting. Entries are reviewed by an outside art professional who selects the works for exhibition at the WCU Fine Art Museum. Selected works will be on view at the Museum from February 18 through March 21\, 2025. An awards ceremony will be held at the WCU Fine Art Museum on Thursday\, March 20\, 2025\, from 5:00-7:00 PM. This year\, the exhibition juror is Marie Cochran\, visual artist and founding curator of the Affrilachian Artist Project. \nMuseum Hours:\nThe WCU Fine Art Museum exhibitions and events are free and open to the public. Anthony – Leader of the women’s suffrage movement and social reformer \n* Ida B. Additionally\, the significant layoffs at the IRS—where over 6\,700 staff members are expected to be dismissed—will disproportionately affect women employed in these roles and hinder services many women rely upon. \nMoreover\, the administration’s executive orders cutting federal benefits for undocumented immigrants not only marginalize vulnerable communities but also disregard the contributions of countless women who are integral to the fabric of our society. These actions reflect a broader pattern of policies that neglect the rights and well-being of women. \nOur response to these challenges must be unwavering. We draw inspiration from the Women’s March on Washington in 2017\, where millions united globally to advocate for women’s rights and social justice. That historic event demonstrated the power of collective action and set the stage for continued resistance against policies that threaten our freedoms. \nOn March 8th\, we must stand in solidarity with all women—transgender\, cisgender\, women of color\, immigrants\, LGBTQ+ individuals\, and those with disabilities. The musical’s lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim\, music by Jule Styne\, and book by Arthur Laurents. \nMany consider Gypsy to be one of the greatest American musicals\, with its story loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. Lee’s mother\, Rose\, is the “ultimate showbiz Mom” determined to raise two daughters to be on the stage. SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration at the North Carolina Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Friday\, March 14th from 1pm to 4pm at the NC Arboretum\, located at 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way\, Asheville\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHowever\, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \nThe program is free to the North Carolina Arboretum members\, but nonmembers will need to pay a $20 entrance fee. DEER FREAKS…and decoys is a multi-media\, multi-layered project of Swannatopia responding to The Farm at Black Mountain College exhibition. The installation at BMCM+AC explores the hyper-natural forces of attraction and repulsion informing our interactions with the landscapes we inhabit. From fence rows to scare-crows\, DEER FREAKS documents the creative ways people propagate\, shape\, lure\, and protect in their environments. \nBring binoculars and sunglasses to participate in “birding” during the show.
