DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday Modelface Comedy brings the best local and touring comedians to Asheville! This week we have local favorite Aaron Naylor on the rooftop at Antidote! \nAaron Naylor is a stand-up comedian known for his one-liners about whales and his mom. In 2013\, he performed at his first open mic at Laff’s Comedy Caffe after moving to Tucson\, because he felt like it. \nShortly after\, he moved back home to Kansas City and won the 2014 Local Comic Standing competition. He quickly became a Midwest favorite\, placing 2nd in the 2016 Cleveland Comedy Festival\, winning the 2017 Funniest Person in Wichita\, and was featured on season 8 of Comcast’s Trial by Laughter. \nAaron has performed at some of the best comedy festivals in the country\, including San Francisco Sketchfest\, Limestone\, Asheville\, and 10\,000 Laughs. He has also shared the stage with cool comedians like Todd Barry\, Sam Tallent\, and Ron Funches. His comedy has been featured on Dry Bar\, Comcast\, Comedy Juice\, and the whole entire internet. \nIn 2021\, Aaron was named the Funniest Person in Kansas City by KC Magazine\, while also co-founding the Fountain City Comedy Festival. DESCRIPTION:Living Female Respondent or 53 Yakshi\nA Performance by Jennie MaryTai Liu\nSaturday\, November 8\, 2025 at 7PM\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street}\nTICKETS – $15 General Admission / $10 for BMCM+AC members + Students w/ID \nJennie MaryTai Liu’s Living Female Respondent or 53 Yakshi\, a dance performance created with devika wickremesinghe and Hannah Heller\, draws from Merce Cunningham’s use of chance operations in his 1976 work Torse. Using the I Ching\, Liu and wickremesinghe selected 64 short video clips from across the internet to build a movement vocabulary. The resulting performance explores how digital media\, randomness\, and embodied movement intersect. First presented at LACMA in 2019\, this work both honors and critically engages with the legacy of postmodern dance. \nMore About the Performance: \nA reference to a reference in a Hollis Frampton text sampled in Maryanne Amacher’s composition Remainder which accompanied Merce Cunningham’s 1976 dance Torse\, Living Female Respondent is a dance which exhaustively appropriates Cage and Cunningham’s compositional use of chance. Originally commissioned to accompany the exhibition Merce Cunningham\, Clouds and Screens\, at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) in February 2019\, the dance took place in the Korean Art Gallery amidst 17th–19th century Korean ceramics and screen paintings\, highlighting the primacy of Asian thinking and aesthetic values in the production of the western avant-garde. Along with performers Hannah Heller and devika wickremesinghe\, choreographer Jennie MaryTai Liu playfully consulted contemporary feminist oracles and the Chinese divination text I ching to determine all structural elements of a bank of movement created from a ‘gamut’ of random YouTube videos\, manifesting in a theatrical display of indeterminacy. \nWith live music by Andrew Gilbert and costumes by Wendy Yang\, the version to be presented at Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center re-wrangles the choreographic material for a different moment and place\, a continuance of a response to impure\, incidental inheritance. \nLiving Female Respondent was originally commissioned with additional funding from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant.

It is the whispering of a spell. It is an attempt to reclaim a lost mythology through somatic embodied imagination. It seeks to face the void of erasure for individual and collective healing. It is shaped as a diptych: two solos in conversation to acknowledge both the singularity of Murielle and Shana’s cultural experience (one is French\, the other is American) and the common thread running through their experience as women of color from the African Diaspora. The performance convokes the audience for a moment of shared witnessing while acknowledging the complexity of a gaze which has often exoticized our Black and Brown bodies.” \nCommissioned by NC State Live\, the original development of the work began in 2022 and after subsequent series of museum and gallery residencies\, When We were Queens… held its world premiere in February 2024\, co-presented by NC State Live and the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Enjoy a stunning AVL sunset from the rooftop bar at Antidote while giggling and sipping a classic cocktail. \nBased out of New York City\, Trey Galyon started his comedy career in Austin\, TX. He quickly became a fixture on the Austin comedy scene and was tapped to work with the likes of – Ron White\, George Lopez\, Greg Giraldo and Mitch Hedberg to name a few. He was asked to perform at Showtimes Latino Laff Festival 3 years in a row and has also performed at the Philly Fringe Festival\, New York Comedy Festival\, Skankfest and also a multiple finalist in the ‘Funniest Person in Austin’ Contest. With his odd yet common sensical take on the world around him\, the Austin Chronicle called him the ‘Anti Hero of Comedy’\nTrey moved to NYC in 2008 and has continued to maintain an underground following around the NYC comedy scene. He’s not great at writing bio’s\, but he is a regular on Doug Benson’s Doug Loves Movies Podcast and the ‘Getting Doug with High’ web series.
