SUMMARY:Craft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft
DESCRIPTION:The word craft-itarianism was coined by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez to name artistic projects that generate employment\, raise awareness\, or offer therapeutic support through craft. These programs provide a space where people affected by addiction\, incarceration\, and gun violence can find solidarity while learning a skill. \nCraft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft celebrates nonprofits and artists who believe in—and actively practice—the power of craft to support and empower individuals and communities. \nThis exhibition was curated by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez. Launched in 2017\, the Curatorial Fellowship supports emerging curators exploring new ideas about craft with mentorship\, professional development\, and a $5\,000 honorarium to realize an exhibition. \nOn view February 27\, 2026–September 27\, 2026

SUMMARY:The Other Mozart
DESCRIPTION:The Other Mozart is an award-winning\, Drama Desk nominated play telling the true\, forgotten story of Nannerl Mozart\, the genius sister of Amadeus — a prodigy\, keyboard virtuoso and composer\, who performed throughout Europe with her brother to equal acclaim\, but her work and her story faded away\, lost to history. \nSet in a stunning 18-foot dress\, this production by playwright Sylvia Milo ushers you into a world of opulence and delight – obscured by restriction and prejudice. The music score brings Nannerl’s musical imagination to life using clavichords\, music boxes\, teacups\, and fluttering fans. Inspired by the Mozart family’s hilarious and heartbreaking letters\, this other Mozart at last tells her story.

SUMMARY:Midnight North
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nBUCK MEEK\nA gleaner of the forgotten\, Buck Meek tips over the familiar and turns the unknown into a companion. On The Mirror\, the artist’s fourth solo record and second album released by 4AD\, there’s a tender power\, countered by immutable vulnerability. With an uncanny curiosity\, Meek conjures twin worlds to reveal the uniqueness in the mundane. Inviting in reflection as collaborator and demon as friend\, The Mirror doesn’t seek to know but to ask\, looking to the shape of a question rather than the illusion of its answer. \nMeek grew up in Wimberley\, Texas\, teenage protege to an old guard of mystic Texas songwriters and musicians. He later moved to New York where he met Adrianne Lenker. The two lived in a van while singing their songs across the country before forming Big Thief. \nThe partnership of Meek and producer\, James Krivchenia\, emerged from a decade of work together in Big Thief. Conceptually\, The Mirror emerged from the idea to combine Meek’s band’s live\, kinetic energy with an oblique electronic world. The pair invited a collective atmosphere in which simultaneous experiment could occurr––the musicians responded to each other in real time\, while their instruments triggered modular synthesizers and electronic magic boxes. The Mirror welcomed in friends\, family\, longtime collaborators from ranging musical eras of life as vital co-creators. New creative partners and longtime friends like composer and ambient musician Alex Somers joined in on synthesizer\, toy microphone\, and piano\, and Mary Lattimore brought in the sounds of her prismatic harp. \nLexical mirrors are handheld\, tactile\, and kept close throughout the record––each one holding up a new truth. The Mirror aptly embraces the unknown with an abiding curiosity and Meek continues to reveal his skill as translator of human feeling and its endless portals. The Mirror looks for duality\, finding it in the weeds and overgrowth. \n“My demon is my darkness and my darkness is my angel / \nI taught him how to read\, now I’m teaching him to write.”

SUMMARY:APLR Presents: The Animeros
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: The Animeros \nThursday\, July 23rd\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Event 7PM \nThe Animeros \nWith musical notes that span well beyond genres like bolero\, psychedelic\, and cumbia\, The Animeros not only make their audience hit the dance floor\, but they also invite their listeners and tastemakers alike to a glimpse of their rich cultural upbringing. \nThe group who is made up of Nick Tozzo (drummer and percussionist)\, Nicolas Sanchez (bassist)\, and Mauro Lopez (guitarist) craft a genre-blending sound that drifts between the lush jungles of Colombia\, the palm-lined streets of 1960s coastal Mexico\, and the dusty cantinas of West Texas. \nSanchez’s Colombian roots\, growing up listening to his parents’ beloved salsa and cumbia; Lopez’s parents’ Mexican and American discography\, which spanned from traditional Tejano to improvised jazz; and Tozzo’s love for jazz and salsa music\, the latter stemming from his college years\, leading him to study and live in Colombia to experience music greats first-handedly. All of this\, paired with their undeniable chemistry and meshed with their now hometown Austin’s innovative creative sounds has led them to create the unique sonic movement that is The Animeros\, a name inspired by Colombian shamans who would usher lost souls to their peace. \nTheir journey took an unexpected turn when their music reached the ears of Dan Auerbach\, the Grammy Award winning producer\, songwriter\, and frontman of The Black Keys. Auerbach first heard them by chance\, music floating from an open hotel window that stopped him in his tracks. Captivated\, he made a note to track them down\, and within a year\, that chance encounter led to something bigger. Now signed to Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound label\, The Animeros are preparing to release their debut album next year\, produced exclusively by Auerbach himself. \n“I feel like it’s only a matter of time for these guys and for the music that they play. All they have to do is be themselves\,” Auerbach said about the trio. “They’re playing the kind of music that they can play forever until they’re 100 years old because it’s rooted in history\, but it’s very much in the present.” \n“When we first talked\, one of the things was our love for the nuance in Latin music\,” Lopez shared. “That’s what initially drew ourselves to each other… That’s like a language among musicians.” Tozzo also talked about their shared musical bond: “What makes our chemistry special is that even if one of us has just a glimpse of an idea\, together we can take that and really create something out of it.” “That encyclopedia of [music] knowledge everyone brings…That’s what’s really appealing about this project. It’s not just surface level. Everybody’s going pretty deep on it\,” Sanchez added. \nThe Animeros are on the cusp of reaching new audiences all over the globe. More singles are coming with a new album on the way in 2026 via Easy Eye Sound. \nAll ages\nEnding Time is an estimate\nTickets only sold through DICE. Ticket Price will increase day of show. SUMMARY:RENT - Flat Rock Playhouse - 7/24-8/15
DESCRIPTION:Thirty years ago\, RENT ignited Broadway like a lightning bolt — a raw\, raucous\, Pulitzer Prize–winning love letter that gave voice to the misfits\, the rebels\, the ones who loved without permission. Three decades later\, its fire still burns. \nIn the East Village\, a patchwork of outsiders fight to create and survive in a city that’s forgotten them. They turn struggle into art and fear into defiance. Through loss\, love\, and the noise of the city\, they find strength together in the face of adversity. \nBased on Puccini’s masterpiece\, La Bohème\, and fueled by its electric rock score and unflinching humanity\, RENT is one of the most influential musicals of the 20th century\, reimagined this season with the bold artistry of Flat Rock Playhouse. Join the revolution. No Day But Today. \nEvent Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:APLR Presents: Mikaela Davis with Nic Panken
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Mikaela Davis with Nic Panken \nSaturday\, July 25th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Event 7PM \nMikaela Davis \nEvery universe begins with a singular point\, a quiet corner where instinct speaks loudest\, where existential imagination can stretch its limbs. For acclaimed harpist and songwriter Mikaela Davis’ new album\, Graceland Way (due TK via Kill Rock Stars)\, that singularity was a hillside home in Chevy Chase Canyon\, a spot nestled in Los Angeles County where time slowed\, the world fell away\, and Davis could create from a sense of warmth and deep attentiveness. The “canyon country” epic born of that care ties a neo-western future back to the lineage of Laurel Canyon\, the mythos of Elvis’s Graceland\, and Paul Simon’s restless reinvention—a place where Davis can explore the fragile balance of light and dark\, grace and struggle\, rose and thorn\, as well as the mystical power found at their nexus. \nThe record’s musical big bang originated at the nexus of UHF Studio\, where Davis and noted guitarist John Lee Shannon\, co-wrote the record and co-produced alongside longtime collaborator Dan Horne. As the album’s story of an unnamed antihero navigating life in a failing world\, her harp\, his guitar\, and their joint melodies weave a mystic depth. That’s immediately evident from the opening track “(Looking Through) Rose Colored Glasses”\, a harp glissando burst functioning like a blissful wormhole to a new universe where dark Western tones come aided by Kurt G. Johnson’s pedal steel guitar and transformative harmonies from guest vocalists Madison Cunningham and Tim Heidecker. But even in this pained origin story\, Davis’ glittering\, opalescent voice and evocative harp find a depth of beauty. \nThat duality is then immediately challenged in “Nothin’s On The Radio”\, where the antihero arrives in a city devoid of meaning\, the dystopia of modern homogenized radio writ large. “It already feels dystopic living in a world today where radio stations are all owned by a handful of corporations\, all playing the same artists. Gone are the days when the radio was a way to bring people together\, to amplify the voices of freaks and weirdos from all corners of the world\,” she says. “I was fortunate to grow up in the last years of the golden age of FM radio\, and being able to tune into this magical world far beyond my own was a transformative experience. Hearing artists like Sheryl Crow and Vanessa Carlton coming through the car stereo is what made me want to write songs and play music in the first place.” \nAs the album progresses and the story continues\, Davis and her compatriots explore magic and mysticism on “11:11” and the haunting darkness of “Mizmoon”. Cass McCombs wrote the latter\, rattling percussion and Davis’ harp low end giving way to slippery shadows of violin. “When Cass first sent over the track\, it was the coolest thing I’d ever heard\,” Davis says. “The music and lyrics create such an ominous mood and I could imagine how the harp would carry the song right away.” Elsewhere\, Wednesday vocalist Karly Hartzman contributes to “Junk Love”\, an exploration of knowingly filling an empty space with meaningless physicality. Across Graceland Way’s\, Davis’ harp masterfully powers the wide variety of soundscapes\, taking on an ecstatic range of emotional color. “At the end of the journey\, the place you were destined for all along isn’t even a place\, it’s a state of mind: Graceland Way\,” Davis says. “It’s all interconnected and the universe balances itself. You need the dark to see the light\, and the most beauty usually happens where the two meet.” \nNic Panken \nBorn in Brooklyn and living in Kingston\, NY\, Nic Panken has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe\, performing on NPR’s Tiny Desk\, at Newport Folk Festival and Austin City Limits as lead singer in NYC band Spirit Family Reunion. His debut solo record Near Divine or Merely Rhyme came out in April 2026\, co-produced with multi-instrumentalist Jared Samuel (Kevin Morby)\, and featuring guest musicians Mat Davidson (Twain) and Austin Vaughn (Cass McCombs) among others.

SUMMARY:Kaleta and Super Yamba Band
DESCRIPTION:ALL AGES\nSTANDING ROOM ONLY \nKALETA & SUPER YAMBA BAND\nBrooklyn’s Kaleta & Super Yamba Band are fronted by Afrobeat and Juju veteran Leon Ligan-Majek a.k.a. Kaleta. The singer/guitarist from the West African country of Benin Republic lived his adolescent life in Lagos\, Nigeria where Afrobeat was born. Kaleta’s guitar chops earned him decades of touring and recording with Fela Kuti\, King Sunny Ade\, Lauryn Hill and more. Kaleta got his start in the late 70s performing in church and was soon after picked up by iconic Juju master and world music pioneer King Sunny Ade. A few years later Fela Kuti came calling. Kaleta would go on to tour the world playing guitar for the King of Afrobeat in his storied band Egypt 80 through the 1980s and into the 1990s. Now based in New York City\, Kaleta has been leading Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album ‘Mèdaho\,’ which was released by California indie label Ubiquity Records\, draws on the group’s shared reverence for the raw\, psychedelic sounds that captivated Kaleta as a music loving kid in 1970s Benin. Mèdaho means “big brother”\, “elder” or “teacher” and is dedicated to Kaleta’s late brother Ligan-Ozavino Pascal who introduced him to funk and soul music at a very early age. The album was included on Bandcamp’s “Best Albums of Summer 2019” list and two of the songs were chosen for the ABC/Hulu series High Fidelity staring Zoe Kravitz. Kaleta and his band have also erupted onto the stages and video screens of major music festivals and music publications across the US. They performed at the historic Apollo Theatre in 2019. They even prompted Action Bronson to stop his own show on VICELAND TV just so he could hear more Yamba. They also performed on Adult Swim’s Fishcenter Live show in 2019. In 2017 they rocked Paste Magazine’s Emerging Music Festival in NYC and after that performance Afropop Worldwide fell in love with Kaleta\, saying “his James Brown grunts have got to be some of the best in the business!”

Terrariums done properly become self-contained\, with low maintenance\, so a green thumb is not necessary! \nParticipants may be quite surprised at the creativity in their own hands! Some will be inspired to further their own collection of terrariums\, make gifts for others\, and even to teach others to do the same.

SUMMARY:Living Poem: One Day Portrait & Presence Weaving of Women
DESCRIPTION:A living poem in the mountains\, with a ceremonial portrait experience. \nIn the heat of Appalachian summer\, join writer\, Reiki master teacher\, and retreat leader\, Katelyn Wargo\, and creative artist\, visionary\, and storyteller\, Christine Yanella\, of Earth Body Photography\, for a day that weaves like a living poem—a poem woven through softening\, reflection\, nourishment\, connection\, water\, and witness. \nThis is a day to step out of the noise long enough to feel your “soulskin”—your holy essence again\, and to receive\, release\, and let your essence shine. \nWe’ll begin with space to arrive\, set an intention\, and settle into your body. And from there\, the day unfolds through a series of experiences designed to soften you open—into presence\, into beauty\, into yourself. \nYou’ll be guided into deep rest through Yoga Nidra & Reiki beneath the trees.\nYou’ll be nourished with a Mediterranean-inspired\, yet Appalachian influenced lunch by our private chef\, thoughtfully prepared with local\, seasonal ingredients.\nYou’ll be witnessed through a professional embodied portrait session by or in the waterfall on the gorgeous property—an opportunity to be seen as you are and celebrate yourself for how far you have come. \nIn between\, there is room to connect\, or to be quiet. You can participate in an optional beauty noticing practice\, hike the trails\, journal\, pull cards\, or nurture new friendships.\nThis day asks nothing of you except that you show up as you are\, ready to receive\, and most importantly\, ready to step into your soulskin again —your holy essence\, in a gathering of like minded women. \nThis is an intimate container of only 8 women.\nSliding scale pricing available*\nLEARN MORE & REGISTER HERE: https://katelynwargo.com/livingpoempotraitandpresence
