SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman. \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

SUMMARY:Sister Act - Flat Rock Playhouse - 10/2-10/25
DESCRIPTION:When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a crime\, she hides out in the last place anyone would look — a convent. Suddenly\, the sequins are swapped for habits\, and the nightclub turns into a nave. But when Deloris brings her unholy amount of soul to the choir loft\, heaven gets a whole new groove. \nSister Act is a holy-rolling\, soul-lifting celebration of sisterhood\, second chances\, and songs that raise the roof. As Deloris helps the sisters find their voices\, they just might change her heart in return. \nPart divine comedy\, part disco revival\, it’s proof that a little funk — and a lot of faith — can turn any sanctuary into a showstopper. \nEvent Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Arabian Desert Living & Geology - Sufra Time at Mocha Box Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:The Arabian Desert may appear empty—but beneath its sands lies a world of ancient oceans\, vanished rivers\, towering escarpments\, volcanic fields and secrets written across millions of years of stone. \nIn Arabian Desert Living & Geology\, Theme #7 of Sufra Time: An Immersive Arabian Dining Journey\, you’ll venture beyond the familiar images of endless dunes and discover one of the most dramatic and misunderstood landscapes on Earth. Explore how shifting tectonic plates divided continents\, how water carved enormous valleys through today’s deserts\, and how wind\, heat and time created landscapes that seem almost otherworldly. \nBut this is also a story of extraordinary human adaptation. Discover how Arabian communities found and protected water\, read the land and stars\, navigated vast distances\, built shelters for extreme conditions and created thriving lives in places many outsiders considered uninhabitable. In the desert\, survival was never simply about endurance—it required knowledge\, cooperation\, ingenuity and a profound understanding of the natural world. \nThe journey also reveals an unexpected connection between Arabia and Appalachia. Though their landscapes appear radically different\, both regions were shaped by powerful geological forces\, rugged terrain and communities that learned to live with the land rather than against it. In both places\, isolation encouraged resourcefulness\, local knowledge became essential\, and the landscape itself helped shape culture\, identity and story. \nThrough breathtaking imagery\, dramatic storytelling\, Arabian food and lively audience participation\, Arabian Desert Living & Geology transforms the desert from an empty backdrop into a living character filled with danger\, beauty and astonishing history. \nCome cross a landscape that seems impossible to inhabit—and discover how geology created the desert\, how people learned to master its challenges and why what appears empty may be overflowing with life and stories.

SUMMARY:The Mother Hips w/ Sounding Arrow
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nTHE MOTHER HIPS\nBased in Northern California\, the Hips headed to New Mexico\, spending time at Ghost Ranch before settling in at Jono Manson’s Kitchen Sink studio in Sante Fe for sessions in late 2021. Self-produced\, When We Disappear features nine new tracks co-written by co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono — collection of lit-psych rock songs Inspired by psychology and literature — as well as a raw\, garagey cover of Buffy St. Marie’s 1964 addiction song “Codine.” \n“Greg [Loiacono\, co-founder) sent me a rough demo of this song and I thought it was promising\,” says Hips co-founder Tim Bluhm of “When We Disappear.” “What he was singing was place-holder gibberish\, or sounds mixed with some actual lyrics\, including what would become the title. I went through it and matched words to his sounds and then tweaked the words to tell a kind of impressionistic history of our adventures together. In this way I believe both Greg’s and my own subconscious worlds revealed themselves. The music is simple and loose\, helping with the devil-may-care attitude of the singing.” \nHailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits\,” The Mother Hips’ headline and festival performances have became the stuff of legend\, finding them sharing stages with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Rolling Stone called the band “divinely inspired\,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70’s rock and power pop\,” and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.” \nSOUNDING ARROW \nVeteran recording artist Scott Kinnebrew returns with SKYMAN\, the newest release from his solo project\, Sounding Arrow. An ode to easeful living\, the soundscape of SKYMAN feels intimate\, layered\, and expansive. \nCo-produced by Gary Jules (“Mad World” from the Donnie Darko soundtrack) and mixed by Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses\, The Avett Brothers’ Emotionalism)\, SKYMAN weaves a vivid sonic landscape rich with the textures of rock\, folk\, country\, blues\, British invasion\, R&B\, and pop. It’s a brew that resists classification\, as it lands somewhere between tradition and invention — what Kinnebrew thinks of as “sonic impressionism.” \nThe songs on SKYMAN are rooted in a personal narrative\, but stretch far beyond autobiography\, they sound like they could be telling anyone’s story. From Kinnebrew: “Gary calls it ‘the last great American novel’\, I call it cool like the rock you find on the beach that ends up on your dashboard.” \nProduced by Scott Kinnebrew & Gary Jules Engineered by Scott Kinnebrew at Captain’s Quarters\, Asheville\, NC & Gary Jules at Carport Recorders\, Asheville\, NC. Mixed by Bill Reynolds at Fleetwood Shack\, Nashville\, TN. Mastered by Dewey Thomas at Forest Hill Sound\, Asheville\, NC.

SUMMARY:ENCOUNTERS WITH CREATIVES – JERRY MAXEY\, BASKET AND MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Jerry Maxey will be on hand to demonstrate his basket weaving techniques developed over decades of persistent and skillful mastery. \nJerry’s work is wicker-weave basketry of dyed rattan and seagrass cord\, and lathe turned wood bases\, rings and rims. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind handmade original\, even when he makes a second piece with the same construction. The wood incorporated in his basketry is all found wood\, generally trees that have fallen in storms\, and the wooden elements have all the variety that nature provides. Once the wood has been turned\, he leaves them indoors for at least three weeks to cure and stabilize. Then he does a final sanding and finishes each piece with pure tung oil. The rattan spokes are then attached to the wood to construct the basket\, weaving in the colors and patterns as he goes. When completed\, he finishes the entire piece with tung oil to bring out the colors and produce a slightly aged patina to the work.
