SUMMARY:Margaret Curtis: Mental Notes
DESCRIPTION:The works included in this exhibition span over a decade and focus on themes of climate change\, societal decay\, and apocalyptic dread. With distinct wit and craftsmanship\, Curtis addresses these universal threats from a deeply personal perspective. \nThe work\, Spot Fire and Flash Flood\, is informed by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon wildfire of 2022\, which significantly altered the landscape near her second home of Las Vegas\, New Mexico. Additionally\, three works from her series Burning Bridges addresses related themes of destruction by fire and flood following the impact of Hurricane Helene on Western North Carolina. \nAlso included are a series of monoprints entitled Earth Ear\, in these images\, Curtis invites us to consider whether an earth-based intelligence or consciousness exists. Rounding out the exhibition are several works from her Auriferous\, Emotional Cartographies and Weapons of War series\, which explore journalistic sensationalism\, political division and our Nation’s culture of violence. Lastly\, several of Curtis’ sketchbooks will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen | Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers
DESCRIPTION:Two hundred years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh artworks\, the National Gallery\, London is hosting the United Kingdom’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. Van Gogh is not only one of the most beloved artists of all time\, but perhaps the most misunderstood. \nThis film is a chance to reexamine and better understand this iconic artist. Focusing on his unique creative process\, “Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers” explores the artist’s years in the south of France\, where he revolutionized his style. Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art\, turning the world around him into vibrant\, idealized spaces and symbolic characters. \nPoets and lovers filled his imagination; everything he did in the south of France served this new obsession. In part\, this is what caused his notorious breakdown\, but it didn’t hold back his creativity as he created masterpiece after masterpiece. Explore one of art history’s most pivotal periods in this once-in-a-century show. Made in close collaboration with the National Gallery.

SUMMARY:The 2026 Christmas YARN Ball
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nYARN\nYou might expect a band that calls itself Yarn to\, naturally\, tend to spin a yarn or two. “That’s what we do\, we tell stories\, live and in the studio\, truth and fiction”\,singer/songwriter Blake Christiana insists. “We don’t always opt for consistency. There’s a different vibe onstage from what comes through in our recordings. There’s a difference in every show as well\, you never know what you’re going to get.” \nYarn’s ability to persevere ought to come as no great surprise\, especially for a band that spent two years honing their chops during a Monday night residency at the famed Kenny’s Castaway in New York’s Greenwich Village. In effect\, it allowed them to rehearse onstage\, mostly in front of audiences that often ranged in size from five to a hundred people on any given night. 10 studio albums followed — Yarn (2007)\, Empty Pockets (2008)\, Leftovers Part One (2009)\, Come On In (2010)\, Leftovers Part 2 (2011)\, Almost Home (2012)\, Shine the Light On (2013)\, This Is The Year (2016)\, and Lucky 13 parts 1 & 2 (2019). The band then took to the road\, playing upwards of 170 shows a year and sharing stages with such superstars as Dwight Yoakam\, Charlie Daniels\, Railroad Earth\, Marty Stuart\, Allison Krauss\, Leon Russell\, Jim Lauderdale\, Leftover Salmon\, Amos Lee\, The Lumineers and many more. They’ve driven nonstop\, made countless radio station appearances\, driven broken-down RVs and watched as their van caught fire. They’ve paid their dues and then some\, looking forward even as they were forced to glance behind. \nIt’s proof positive that the Brooklyn and Raleigh based band have made their mark\, and in dealing with their emotions\, scars and circumstances\, they find themselves in a position to share those experiences with others who have juggled similar sentiments.

SUMMARY:The Art of Wellbeing: Therapeutic Art Making in the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Art has the power to heal\, restore\, and reconnect us to what matters most. Join us at the Asheville Art Museum for a guided art-making session led by a registered art therapist\, designed to explore how art can be a tool to nurture your mental and emotional wellbeing. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or have never picked up a paintbrush\, come as you are and leave feeling refreshed. Join Alexis for sessions on August 15\, September 19\, and December 19. \nDr. C. Alexis Decosimo is a licensed mental health clinician\, registered art therapist\, and Doctor of Public Health. She specializes in helping children\, families\, and individuals access healing through blending therapeutic artmaking and evidence-based approaches including EMDR\, cognitive behavioral therapy\, and person-centered approaches.\nShe believes in meeting clients where they are\, drawing on creative modalities to open pathways to healing that talk therapy alone may not reach. Her clinical work is deeply informed by over a decade of international experience building mental health programs in some of the world’s most under-resourced settings\, giving her a grounded\, adaptive\, and culturally sensitive approach to care.\nIn her Asheville practice\, she brings that same commitment to accessible\, ethical\, and community-rooted mental health support to help clients process trauma\, build resilience\, and find their footing through the power of expressive therapy.
