SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Randy Shull: Black & White"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are Wed – Sat 11am-5pm \nTracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Black & White\, an exhibition of new large-scale\, abstract work by artist Randy Shull. This is Shull’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. An opening reception for the Artist is scheduled for Friday\, August 9 from 6-8PM.\n \nShull has the unique ability to evoke both gravity and weightlessness within a single artwork\, pouring thick layers of paint around the loose weave of handmade hammocks\, a material that he has been incorporating in his work for several years. Hammocks are core to life in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico where Shull has lived part-time for the past 18 years\, and where he maintains a studio in the historic center of Mérida. If art and hammocks are the vehicles of dreams\, Shull’s work carves a path into the subconscious.  \nAs objects\, hammocks are extremely strong and malleable\, with a rich cultural history. Shull at once honors this craft and lineage while treating it irreverently\, exploring the boundaries of what a painting can be with tireless experimentation. In these heavily textured almost muscular works\, Shull subverts the very notion of a painting\, reversing the usual role of canvas and paint. Using paint as a binder to hold the hammocks together\, he creates a radical new material that is culled from the histories of art and craft while decidedly pointing towards their futures.  \nThe natural sagging and draping that occurs in these works lends a tapestry-like aesthetic\, and upon looking we become suddenly viscerally aware of the weight of our bodies. Simultaneously\, Shull’s use of vibrant colors\, earth tones\, and rough surfaces and edges allows us to revel in the simple pleasures of materiality and light. \nThe title of the exhibition is in part a nod toward contemporary life in the polarized U.S. and is in line with Shull’s interest in pairs\, contrasts\, and the spaces between; many of the works on view are subtly divided into two panels. \nIn addition to paintings\, the exhibition will include some sculptural and video elements that illustrate Shull’s investigation\, in the extreme\, of the capacity and capability of the hammock.  \nRandy Shull lives and works in Asheville\, NC and Mérida\, Mexico. He received his BFA in Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology\, NY in 1986. He is the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship and a NEA Southern Arts Federation grant. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum\, NY; The High Museum of Art\, GA; The Renwick Museum of American Art\, Washington\, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft + Design\, NC; Racine Museum of Art\, WI; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design\, NC; Museum of Art and Design\, NY\, Black Mountain College Museum\, NC; The Asheville Art Museum\, NC; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, LA; The Mobile Museum of Art\, AL\, and numerous corporate collections including Fidelity\, Wells Fargo\, Piedmont Natural Gas\, Duke Hospital\, and Wortham Center for the Performing Arts\, among others.

A distinguished artist from Northern Virginia\, Vinjamuri is acclaimed for his masterful technique\, melodic innovation\, and profound emotional expression. Joining him on stage will be the gifted violinist Krupa Sekhar and masterful percussionist Athrey Nadhan\, this performance promises to be a captivating celebration of South Indian classical music. \nKamalakiran Vinjamuri embarked on his musical journey under the guidance of his grandfather\, Sri. Parthasarathy Iyengar\, and later honed his skills under Smt. Malladi Vijayalakshmi. Introduced to the violin by his father\, Sri. Subhash Vinjamuri\, at the age of 7\, Kamalakiran established a strong foundation for his musical career. Since 2006\, he has been under the esteemed tutelage of Sangeethakalanidhi A. Kanyakumari\, and also continues advanced lessons under his father. \nFrom a young age\, Kamalakiran garnered attention for his exceptional talent\, earning numerous awards from esteemed institutions such as Sri Mylapore Fine Arts\, Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha (2010\, 2013)\, and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha (2014). Notably\, he was recognized as the best violinist in the prestigious Music Academy in Chennai during the 2014 Spirit of Youth series\, as well as in the 2016 and 2017 Music Seasons. \nRenowned for his versatility\, Kamalakiran excels both as a soloist and accompanist. His ability to replicate vocal styles effortlessly on the violin\, while intricately weaving instrumental nuances\, sets him apart. His performances showcase not only technical prowess but also a quick wit in accompaniment and a formidable flair in solo performances. \nKamalakiran has shared the stage with legendary figures such as Sri M. Balamuralikrishna\, Sri TN Seshagopalan\, and many other stalwarts of Carnatic music. He remains a favored accompanist among today’s leading artists\, enriching performances with his virtuosity and musical sensitivity. His collaborations span different genres\, reflecting his versatility and adaptability across diverse musical contexts. \nAs a soloist\, Kamalakiran performed across the US\, Asia\, and Europe. \nKrupa Sekhar feels blessed to have begun her Carnatic violin musical journey at age four with Guru Shri. A.R. Balaskandan and doubly blessed to be continuing it with Vidwan Shri. Kamalakiran Vinjamuri since 2017. Krupa has won many prizes for Carnatic violin in Krithi & manodharma categories in several prestigious competitions such as the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana\, the SVBF Nadaswaroopini\, CMANA’s GCD\, Papanasam Sivan competitions\, and more. Krupa has also learned Carnatic Vocal from Guru Smt. Saavitri Ramanand\, Kanjira from Guru Shri A.R. Balaskandan\, Bharathanatyam from Guru Smt. Thejeswini Raj and had her Bharathanatyam Arangetram in 2018. Krupa is a rising Senior at Cornell University. \nAthrey Nadhan from Chicago\, IL started learning the art of playing the Mridangam at the age of five and is currently undergoing advanced training from the esteemed professional\, Srimushnam Sri V. Raja Rao in Chennai\, India. Athrey has performed in over 350 concerts across North America and India\, accompanying several leading musicians including Chitravina N. Ravikiran\, Neyveli Santhanagopalan\, and Vittal Ramamoorthy\, among many others. Athrey also has learned Carnatic vocal music from B.U. Ganesh Prasad. He is a Software Engineer at Apple in Raleigh\, North Carolina.

Their 2022 debut\, produced by REM / Smithereens producer Don Dixon\, captured the ears and hearts of indie radio and streaming playlists across the U.S. and Europe. They have played extensively throughout the South and MidAtlantic in ‘22-’23 supporting The Connells\, Southern Culture On The Skids\, and alumni of Pylon\, and Fetchin Bones\, and The dB’s. \nTHE TRICK THREAT is out with its brand of alt pop rock originals. The Friends of Music at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will present a concert\, “Songs My Daddy Taught Me” on Sunday afternoon\, August 11\, at four o’clock in the Parish Hall across the street from the church\, located at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. \nLinda Edwards\, soprano and pianist Dewitt Tipton will perform familiar songs from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40\,s and favorite “old time” hymns. In her 50-year music and theatre career\, Linda has sung opera\, musical theatre\, oratorio\, recitals\, cabaret\, and performed as symphony soloist all over the world. She made her international debut in Tel Aviv\, with Leonard Bernstein\, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra\, as Cunegonde in CANDIDE\, sang early music as soloist for Aspen Music Festival\, and toured Europe as Carlotta in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. As symphony guest soloist\, she has sung with conductors John Mauceri\, Helmutt Rilling\, Sergiu Comissiona\, and Keith Lockhart. Opera roles include Norina (DON PASQUALE)\, Nanetta (FALSTAFF)\, Sophie (WERTHER)\, The Witch (HANSEL & GRETEL)\, and the title role in THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF. For over 35 years\, Linda has performed at Flat Rock Playhouse\, the State Theatre of North Carolina\, in a variety of roles which include Madame Thenardier (LES MISERABLES)\, Truvy and Clairee (STEEL MAGNOLIAS)\, Mrs. Potts (BEAUTY & THE BEAST)\, Fairy Godmother (CINDERELLA)\, Adelaide (GUYS & DOLLS)\, Prudie (PUMP BOYS & DINETTES)\, Ursula (LITTLE MERMAID)\, and Madame Arcati (BLITHE SPIRIT). She recently received the Southern California Desert Sun Award as Outstanding Actress for her work as Florence Foster Jenkins in SOUVENIR (Coyote Stage Works\, Palm Springs). His second novel\, After the Lights Go Out\, was named a Best Book of Summer 2022 by BookRiot and Publishers Weekly\, and named a Booklist Editor’s Choice Best Book of 2022. \nJason Mott is the author of two poetry collections and four novels: The Returned\, The Wonder of All Things\, The Crossing\, and Hell Of A Book. His first novel\, The Returned\, was a New York Times bestseller and was turned into a TV series that ran for two seasons. He has a BFA in Fiction and an MFA in Poetry\, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His poetry and fiction have appeared in various literary journals\, and his fourth novel\, Hell of a Book\, was named the winner of the National Book Award for Fiction\, 2021. Most recently\, he was selected as a 2024 National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellow.
