SUMMARY:Dana and Alden: Papa’s Boat Tour
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nDANA AND ALDEN\nJazz duo Dana & Alden have always had a wanderlust\, something they credit to their maternal grandfather. Affectionately known as Papa\, he was the kind of person others naturally gravitate towards. It was a photograph from one of his trips to Asia that inspired the Eugene\, OR duo’s new album Papa’s Boat. In the image Papa is looking out across the horizon and stood next to his boat Sŵn y Môr (Welsh for “Sound of the Sea.”)\n“I think so much of what Alden and I are doing comes from just watching him live his own unique life\,” says Dana. Alden agrees. “His emboldened\, passionate personality gave us permission to be our own selves\, to be unconventional and draw outside of the box.”\nRecorded with Malcolm Catto in London in March 2025\, Papa’s Boat combines all their childhood love and global experience to create an ecstatic sound built on Dana’s saxophone and Alden’s drums. Recorded with the duo’s backing band\, Ebba Dankel (vocals and keys)\, Andrew Mitchell (bass)\, Eli Torgersen (vocals and guitar) and Salim Charvet (sax and synths)\, Papa’s Boat is rooted in jazz but pulling influence from indie\, pop\, rap\, bossa nova\, and beyond. A hypnotic combination of sax and buzzing synths on “Lighthouse” sets the tone for an album that uses water as both a reflective surface and a body to get lost in. Elsewhere there are collaborations with Mei Semones\, Melanie Charles\, and legendary Brazilian songwriter Marcos Valle\, a hero figure to the band who appears on “El Gaucho” and “Friendship Is A Boat.” \nThroughout its runtime Papa’s Boat sails purposefully between memories of the past and visions of a brighter future. It doesn’t just commemorate their Papa as a beloved character\, but shares him with the world.

SUMMARY:Spirited Improv Fall Day Time Playshop Series in Asheville
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT SPIRITED IMPROV \nSpirited Improv is a unique fusion of expressive arts\, spiritual practice\, and group play that helps you release fear\, trust the unknown\, and show up as your truest self. Through embodied improvisational play\, movement\, voice\, storytelling\, music\, and customery\, we create a living container where authenticity is welcomed and presence is practiced. Over time\, this shared experience fosters deep connection\, confidence\, and a felt sense of belonging. \nFacilitated by Jessica Chilton\, who brings over 20 years of improvisational performing arts experience and 16 years as an expressive arts therapist\, weaving creativity\, spirituality\, and presence into a safe\, transformative group experience. \nSpirited Improv is for those seeking a spiritual community grounded in lived experience\, where growth happens through relationship\, creativity\, and the courage to show up fully. As we transform individually through improv\, we strengthen the collective and contribute to a more compassionate world. \nWHAT PAST PARTICIPANTS ARE SAYING \n“Spirited Improv is authentic\, vulnerable and connective. It meets my need to deeply feel\, be seen and see others. On my first night I experienced such a profound healing experience after sharing what was on my heart. It was like a sound\, healing touch\, full moon energy bath that opened my heart. ” ~ Kate \n“Spirited Improv is a fun and little bit edgy way of interacting with the mystery of the moment. You decide how much you want to interact or observe from the audience so you never have to do anything you don’t want to do. It is an opportunity to let go of control and explore the spontaneity of life and creativity in a supportive\, safe environment..” ~ Kenyon \n“I got to play\, move my body\, laugh\, take joy in watching my friends come alive\, give and receive big hugs\, and feel the presence of the ancestors who always join me. There’s something so sacred about being present with others while we play\, witness and embody what is.” ~ Sue \nWHO IS THIS FOR \nPeople drawn to spirituality\, personal growth\, and inner exploration\nThose seeking genuine connection\, community\, and a sense of belonging\nCreatives and non-creatives alike – no improv or performance experience needed\nIndividuals who value compassion\, openness\, and radical acceptance\nPeople who want to grow in joyful\, embodied ways rather than through heavy or rigid processes\nThose who want to make a positive impact by starting with inner transformation\nIf you’re open\, curious\, and willing to show up as you are—you belong here. \nCURIOUS BUT NOT READY TO JOIN? \nJoin us for the very first playshop of our multi-week series and if you love your first playshop (and we think you will)\, then you’ll have the opportunity to register for the remainder of the series. SUMMARY:Mike Wiley Productions presents “Changing Same”
DESCRIPTION:*Please note: All performances will take place at the YMI Cultural Center at 39 S. Market St. Downtown Asheville* \nOn July 8\, 1944\, Private Booker T. Spicely boarded a bus in downtown Durham but never made it back to camp. The driver reboarded the bus and continued his route. An all-White jury later acquitted him in 28 minutes. \nAward-winning playwright and performer Mike Wiley brings Spicely\, the driver\, and a chorus of witnesses back to life in this searing solo show — excavating a story that faded from public memory in a city known for its progressive views\, visionary Black entrepreneurs\, and institutes of higher learning. \nJoin Mike Wiley for a Q&A following each performance. \nGeneral Admission Adult Tickets: $35\nStudent Tickets: $15 (18 and under/ college and graduate students with student ID)\nWednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays: 7:30pm ; Sundays: 2pm\n“Choose Your Price” Nights: Wednesdays & Thursdays (11/4-11/5 & 11/11-11/12)

SUMMARY:Patio Show: Miriam’s Militia
DESCRIPTION:LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE \nMiriam’s Militia \nMiriam Allen is a genre-defying songwriter who has opened for icons including Tim O’Brien\, Doc Watson\, and Del McCoury\, performing at festivals across the western hemisphere from MerleFest in North Carolina to Salmonfest in Alaska to the Festival Río Cuale in Mexico. A finalist in both the John Hartford Songwriting Contest and the Asheville Brown Bag Competition\, she builds solo shows around vocals\, guitar\, fiddle\, and foot stomp\, with setlists that range from avant-garde to honky-tonk to Latin. \nBeyond the stage\, Miriam is a passionate advocate and naturalist. She organized The Resilience Festival to support survivors of sexual trauma and the Pathway to Citizenship show to fund immigrant legal protections\, and she works as a music therapist in group homes for people with disabilities. A backpacker of more than 1\,000 miles through the Andes\, Rockies\, and Appalachians\, she has volunteered to treat hundreds of hemlock trees across Western North Carolina and translated educational materials into Spanish for her community. She wrote a song for the award-winning film Coyote and another that was played for President Jimmy Carter in his final weeks. Whether for a crime victim\, an injured raccoon\, or an aphid-infested hemlock\, Miriam Allen shows up with a song and an open heart.” Ty Gilpin – SHIFT Music Services

He’s not interested in telling the rest of us what to do or think. But he is charting out a personal guide for his life\, quieting the noise\, and sitting with his real voice – the one that’s candid\, consistent\, and often inconvenient. \nWe’re Only Human is Carll’s tenth album. Like his best lyrics\, it is also an understated masterpiece\, an honest snapshot of one man’s confrontation and delight with humanity’s biggest and most intimate questions. Where do we find forgiveness for ourselves and grace for others? How do we hold on to peace of mind and stay present? What can we—and should we––trust? And how can we moor ourselves to\, well\, ourselves\, in the midst of confusing\, trying times? We’re Only Human offers audiences the chance to listen to Carll as he listens to himself. \n“I’ve lived outside of myself for so long\,” Carll admits. “Distractions\, fear\, anxiety\, insecurity\, and the complexity of being human in this world have so often pulled me away from being present or at peace.” \n“I feel like there’s been a voice riding shotgun all my life\, pushing me to do better\, but I’ve struggled to listen to it\,” Carll says. “The idea behind this record was to do the personal work I needed to do\, then codify those lessons in song to serve as sort of breadcrumbs to get me back on the trail if\, and inevitably when\, I get lost again.” \nCarll is more than two decades into a celebrated career. Praise from places such as Pitchfork and the New York Times––the latter of which yoked Carll’s ability to tackle tough issues with wry humor to Bob Dylan––punctuate a resume that includes Americana Music Awards and a Grammy nomination. His songs aren’t safe\, but many of Nashville’s stars have recorded them\, including Kenny Chesney\, Lee Ann Womack\, and Brothers Osborne. As a solo recording artist\, Carll has long-since established himself as one of Americana’s most-played––and most loved––voices. His warm but crackling vocals\, wit\, and heart dance through wordplay that’s always clever\, and never too precious. \nAs We’re Only Human collects moments of Carll figuring out how to be with himself\, the songs feel forthright\, hopeful\, and timely. In today’s onslaught of instant gratification\, rage-baiting headlines\, glorified intolerance\, and falling empathy\, the record is a startling outlier: an artist’s raw\, real-life effort to live well—both with himself and others. Carll embraces private epiphanies\, and shares them with the world\, allowing them to unfold for all to see and share. \nJOELTON MAYFIELD

DESCRIPTION:– LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE \nWhitney Mongé is a Nashville-based Americana Soul singer-songwriter and guitarist whose smoky\, soulful vocals and raw\, heartfelt songwriting reflect a life steeped in authenticity. Raised in the Pacific Northwest\, she began her musical journey busking on the streets of Seattle\, where her powerful voice and honest storytelling forged deep connections with listeners and shaped her signature sound—a bold fusion of soul\, blues\, indie folk\, and rock.\nHer artistry has led her from street corners to international tours\, collaborations with the Seattle Symphony\, and festival stages like Newport Folk Festival with Black Opry. SUMMARY:APLR Presents: Min Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty - Boundless
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Min Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty – Boundless \nThursday\, November 5th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Show 7PM \nMin Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty: Boundless \n“Boundless\, a groundbreaking collaboration between two visionary artists: Chinese pipa soloist and composer Min Xiao-Fen and Ukrainian bandurist and composer Julian Kytasty. Both classically trained and shaped by their work with avant-garde icon Derek Bailey\, Min and Kytasty bridge centuries-old traditions with bold contemporary expression. \nMin’s work\, “Xi Xi\, Cuo Cuo (Wash and Rub)\,” draws inspiration from the overlooked history of Chinese immigrants in the Mississippi Delta. “They lived there for over a century\,” she explains. “In the segregated South\, they ran grocery stores and laundries that served both Black and white communities. My music reflects how they quietly bridged a divided world.” \nKytasty’s “Travel Music” features a rare bandura with a remarkable past. “It was crafted by Iosyp Shizhny\, a pioneering performer who fled the USSR via Manchuria and settled in Shanghai\,” Julian says. “He escaped China in 1948 and brought the instrument to Buenos Aires. I discovered it in 1987\, brought it to New York – and it’s still going strong. I can’t wait to play it with Min.” \nFor Min\, the performance also echoes a poignant memory: performing in Kyiv in 1988 as part of a Chinese cultural exchange. “Through this music\, we continue that spirit of connection—and send a prayer for peace in Ukraine and around the world.” \nBoundless is more than a title – it’s a journey across time\, borders\, and imagination. Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of fearless collaboration and transcendent sound. \nAll-ages

SUMMARY:Aaron Lee Tasjan
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nAARON LEE TASJAN\nAaron Lee Tasjan was experiencing the worst bout of imposter syndrome of his career when he sat down and wrote Todd Snider a vulnerable email asking for advice. Tasjan\, despite writing and recording some of the most astute Americana rock songs of the last decade and being nominated for a Grammy\, just didn’t see a future for an independent singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist like himself. \nSnider read Tasjan’s email and immediately replied: “I think I have some ideas. I’ll write you back tomorrow.” \nThe next morning\, Tasjan awoke to a signature Todd Snider missive for how to move forward as an artist. It was a novel-length email that read like the battle plans for the Invasion of Normandy. Do this\, Snider wrote. Then this. But never that. The specifics don’t matter — besides\, that’d be giving away the secret — but Tasjan devoured his mentor’s words and took them to heart. \nHe began writing feverishly\, unbothered by expectations and immune to any pressure to match his acclaimed albums like In the Blazes\, Karma for Cheap\, or his most recent\, 2024’s Stellar Evolution. When he was through\, Tasjan had Get Over It\, Underdog\, his most inspiring LP to date. Produced by Tasjan and his longtime sound engineer Mark Miller\, the album is a celebration of the power of songwriting\, the unbreakable bond of friendship\, and the determination of the dark horse. \n“I went to the ultimate oasis for a singer\, songwriter\, and troubadour: Todd Snider. And he said\, in very Todd fashion\, ‘You can find your path forward by going backwards\,’” Tasjan says with a laugh. “But he was right. I set aside my ego\, played shows solo without my band\, and wrote a lot of songs. In that process\, I found my confidence again.” \nTragically\, however\, he lost his mentor. Snider died shortly after Get Over It\, Underdog\, was finished\, leaving a void in the folk-rock scene that will prove nearly impossible to fill. But Tasjan is committed to carrying on Snider’s unbridled spirit and lifting up underdogs everywhere. \nMADELEINE KELSON \nMadeleine Kelson is a Nashville based Americana artist. She pulls from a rich tradition of Folk\, Country\, and Americana\, challenging its boundaries as a queer artist to represent the modern world. Madeleine spent her high school years in Chicago band\, The Kelson Twins\, playing venues including House of Blues and Thalia Hall\, and landing a top Daytrotter Session with Paste Magazine. She later moved to Music City to pursue a solo career. Inspired by artists like Patty Griffin\, Jason Isbell\, andBrandi Carlile\, her dynamic and down-to-earth storytelling and rich vocals are part of why NPR named her one 10 Nashville artists on the rise.

SUMMARY:ABSTRACT PAINTING UNLEASHED - BOLD MARKS AND BRAVE LAYERS with Jodi Ohl
DESCRIPTION:If you’re drawn to abstract art with strong visual impact but struggle to create paintings that feel cohesive rather than chaotic\, this workshop is designed for you. \nDuring this two-day immersive studio experience\, you’ll learn the process Jodi uses to build dynamic abstract paintings filled with movement\, contrast\, texture\, and personality. Through a series of guided exercises\, demonstrations\, and hands-on experimentation\, you’ll develop original shapes\, marks\, and visual language that feel authentic to your own work. Together\, we’ll explore: \n– Creating strong compositions without relying on rigid formulas \n– Building layers that add depth\, history\, and interest \n– Using bold color\, graphic elements\, and contrast with intention \n– Developing confident mark-making that energizes a painting \n– Knowing when to push a piece further—and when to stop \nThis workshop is about learning how to make stronger decisions\, trust your instincts\, and discover new possibilities within your own creative process. \nOne of the greatest advantages of working in person is the opportunity to create alongside other artists. You’ll gain fresh perspectives\, learn through shared experiences\, and leave with new ideas that often emerge only when artists gather together. \n→ Artists can expect to complete one to two mid-sized abstract paintings incorporating texture\, collage\, and layered acrylic techniques. Each day begins with focused warm-up exercises and demonstrations that provide practical tools you can continue using long after the workshop ends. \nThis workshop is open to makers of all levels with some experience working in acrylics. If you would like to create bold\, contemporary abstract art that tells your story\, jump in and join us for Abstract Painting Unleashed!

SUMMARY:Patio Show: Drew Ryder Smith
DESCRIPTION:– LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE \nDrew Ryder Smith \nDrew Ryder Smith is a country music singer and award winning professional songwriter. Born and raised between “Music City” (Nashville\, TN) and “The Hit Making Capital of the World” (Muscle Shoals\, AL)\, his career in music was probably inevitable. \nDrew’s work has been recorded in many countries including the US\, Canada\, Ireland\, Germany and Australia (among others) by legends like Merle Haggard\, Nashville powerhouse Randy Houser\, Rob Snyder\, Jason Charles Miller\, Kevin Denney\, John Schneider\, and Australian-Canadian country singer\, Gord Bamford\, who stands as one of the most decorated artists in Canadian country music and the only two-time winner of the CMA Global Country Artist of the Year award. \nDrew learned his first chords on his grandmother’s 1964 Gibson Hummingbird and wrote his first song (which he now describes as “terrible”) when he was only 12. He started his music career in radio at the age of 14 when he innocently called the studio to inquire about working there and his deep voice led the station manager to believe he was an adult with radio experience. When a 14 year old Drew showed up at the studio\, after a shared laugh at the mix up\, his unique voice inspired the manager to keep him around and he began working as an on air personality. \nDrew has named his early influences include: Steve Earle\, John Prine\, Don Williams\, Merle Haggard\, Foster & Lloyd\, Jackson Browne and\, last but certainly not least\, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, which happens to be the first concert he ever attended – at the age of two. His pastor father relays that they skipped church to attend the concert and little Drew played air guitar throughout the whole thing. \nDrew toured coast to coast for several years in his early career and has shared the stage with Merle Haggard\, Don Williams\, Big & Rich\, Lee Brice\, Lady A and many others. He describes opening for Merle Haggard at the Ryman Auditorium with only a stool and his acoustic guitar as one of the highlights of his career. Opening for one of his heroes with the likes of John Prine\, Tim and Faith\, Keith Urban and top industry executives in the audience\, and his mother in the wings\, is a story he rarely tells but that is close to his heart. \nDrew’s long songwriting career has also afforded him the opportunity to write with Don Schlitz (“The Gambler\,” “When You Say Nothing At All”)\, Rob Snyder (“She Got The Best Of Me” – Luke Combs)\, Driver Williams (“Smoke A Little Smoke” – Eric Church)\, Bobby Pinson (“Some Of It” – Eric Church) and he continues to work with some of the brightest talent in Nashville. His first gold record hangs on his mother’s/father’s wall.
