SUMMARY:PERFORMANCE: Ken Vandermark + PNL
DESCRIPTION:Performance: Ken Vandermark and PNL\nFriday\, August 30 at 7pm\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street}\nTICKETS – $15 General Admission / $10 BMCM+AC members + Students w/ID \nBMCM+AC presents the duo Ken Vandermark (reeds) and PNL (drums) for a high-energy evening concert. \nThe high impact duo of PNL (drums) and Ken Vandermark (reeds) has been working together for more than two decades\, touring in Europe\, the United States\, Japan\, and Brazil\, and releasing 11 albums of critically acclaimed\, wide ranging improvised music throughout that period. Though they have both worked in many other exceptional groups- such as the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet and Lean Left (with Terrie Hessels and Andy Moor of The Ex)- they have continued to return to their duo for more than 20 years because it remains crucial to their creative output. \nPNL and Vandermark began this collaboration when they recorded their initial album\, Dual Pleasure\, for the label Smalltownsupersound\, in 2002. Shortly afterward\, they performed their first concert at the Molde International Jazz Festival. Since then\, they’ve performed on an international basis every year. Their approach to the duo context is ferocious in its intensity\, combining extreme rhythmic velocity with formal deconstruction and re-assembly\, with the freedom to use any genre as a resource at any time. In many ways\, PNL and Vandermark are more open in this setting than with any of their other playing situations\, creating a unique approach to improvised music that is riveting in its ideas and execution. \nThe duo’s most recent tours occurred in both Brazil and Japan during 2019. The pair will return to Japan in January of 2024\, for a series of concerts that will coincide with the release of the PNL & Ken Vandermark: JAPAN 2019 boxset of recordings\, which includes collaborations with legendary Japanese musicians: Akira Sakata\, Masahiko Satoh\, and Yuji Takahashi. \nKen Vandermark (USA 1964) is an avant-garde composer\, improviser\, saxophonist/clarinetist\, curator\, and writer; in 1999 was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in music. He moved to Chicago from Boston in 1989 and has worked continuously from the early 1990s onward\, both as a performer and organizer in North America\, Europe\, Latin America\, Japan\, and Ethiopia\, recording in a large array of contexts\, with many internationally renowned musicians. \nHis current group activity includes the bands Edition Redux\, Lean Left\, The DKV Trio\, DEK\, his large ensemble Entr’acte\, the ongoing Momentum projects; duos with Terrie Ex\, Christof Kurzmann\, Damon Locks\, PNL\, Mars Williams\, and Nate Wooley; and work as a solo performer. Ken co-founded Catalytic Sound in 2012\, an organization dedicated to the economic sustainability of creative improvising musicians and has been its director since then. In 2014 he began Audiographic Records\, an independent music label. Since June of 2015 Ken has been co-curator of Option\, a music and interview series held at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. Half of each year is spent touring in Europe\, North America\, Latin America\, and Japan; his concerts and numerous recordings have been critically acclaimed at home and abroad. \nPNL was born in Molde\, Norway\, and raised at a jazz club in Stavanger run by his parents. It was natural to choose his fathers drums as his instrument and jazz as his work. From 1990 on he took actively part in the jazz milieu in Stavanger and joined bands with established musicians such as trumpeter Didrik Ingvaldsen and saxophonist Frode Gjerstad. He studied at the Jazz dept at the University in Trondheim\, where the first self initiated bands were established\, and things developed really fast – PNL was nationally acknowledged at the age of 20. \nThe forming of the quartet Element in 1993 in many ways represented the start of a new phase in PNL’s musical life. Element musically became a platform for several other groups with bassist Flaten and pianist Wiik\, and lead to collaborations with Iain Ballamy and Chris Potter\, amongst others. \nPNL moved to Oslo in 1996\, where he joined and/or took part in the forming of bands like Vindaloo\, SAN\, Håkon Kornstad Tio\, The Quintet and Frode Gjerstad Trio. He later on got more into self initiated projects and collaborations with Swedish musicians\, such as pianist Sten Sandell and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. PNL played his first solo concert in 1999\, and since then the solo concept has been an important part of his work. His solo album “Sticks and stones” was put out in 2001 on SOFA Rec. Being active in several bands at the same time has always been PNL’s deliberate working method. He is constantly conscious about the projects he is in\, as his participation in each and one of them is fully dedicated. Playing is not about getting from start to goal\, but rather being in an everlasting process\, a continuous movement where each new piece of music performed is a prolongation of the latest. Today PNL’s portfolio includes Atomic\, School Days\, The Thing\, Frode Gjerstad Trio\, Sten Sandell Trio\, Scorch Trio\, Territory Band\, FME\, and various duo projects such as with reedmen Ken Vandermark\, John Butcher\, Mats Gustafsson\, organist Nils Henrik Asheim and noise wizard Lasse Marhaug\, and the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet. Before turning 30 PNL cemented his position as one of the most profiled drummers in Europe today. He has given countless performances at festivals and clubs in Europe and USA and participated on more than 50 recordings. He runs his own annual festival – All Ears – for improvised music in Oslo.

The works in the exhibition\, which feature the recurring motif of the table\, both literal and metaphorical\, use this common piece of furniture to signify a place where people come together in connection\, endure and overcome injustice\, and make decisions that can change an individual life or the course of humanity. \nReception Details:\nThe exhibition’s reception will be held on Thursday\, October 3\, 2024\, from 5 to 7 PM. Light refreshments and drinks will be served at BAC’s Star Atrium. \nMuseum Hours:\nThe WCU Fine Art Museum exhibitions and events are free and open to the public. Standard Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday\, 10 AM-4 PM\, and Thursday\, 10 AM-7 PM. If you have any questions\, please call (828)227-ARTS. \nImage Credit: Narsiso Martinez\, Always Fresh\, 2018\, ink\, charcoal\, gouache\, gold Leaf\, collage and multiple small oil on canvas paintings on reclaimed produce boxes\, 92.5 x 278 inches\, Courtesy of the artist and Charlie James Gallery\, Los Angeles. © 2018 Narsiso Martinez ; Photo © 2019 Michael Underwood.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Randy Shull: Black & White"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are Wed – Sat 11am-5pm \nTracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Black & White\, an exhibition of new large-scale\, abstract work by artist Randy Shull. This is Shull’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. An opening reception for the Artist is scheduled for Friday\, August 9 from 6-8PM.\n \nShull has the unique ability to evoke both gravity and weightlessness within a single artwork\, pouring thick layers of paint around the loose weave of handmade hammocks\, a material that he has been incorporating in his work for several years. Hammocks are core to life in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico where Shull has lived part-time for the past 18 years\, and where he maintains a studio in the historic center of Mérida. If art and hammocks are the vehicles of dreams\, Shull’s work carves a path into the subconscious. \nAs objects\, hammocks are extremely strong and malleable\, with a rich cultural history. Shull at once honors this craft and lineage while treating it irreverently\, exploring the boundaries of what a painting can be with tireless experimentation. In these heavily textured almost muscular works\, Shull subverts the very notion of a painting\, reversing the usual role of canvas and paint. Using paint as a binder to hold the hammocks together\, he creates a radical new material that is culled from the histories of art and craft while decidedly pointing towards their futures. \nThe natural sagging and draping that occurs in these works lends a tapestry-like aesthetic\, and upon looking we become suddenly viscerally aware of the weight of our bodies. Simultaneously\, Shull’s use of vibrant colors\, earth tones\, and rough surfaces and edges allows us to revel in the simple pleasures of materiality and light. \nThe title of the exhibition is in part a nod toward contemporary life in the polarized U.S. and is in line with Shull’s interest in pairs\, contrasts\, and the spaces between; many of the works on view are subtly divided into two panels. \nIn addition to paintings\, the exhibition will include some sculptural and video elements that illustrate Shull’s investigation\, in the extreme\, of the capacity and capability of the hammock. \nRandy Shull lives and works in Asheville\, NC and Mérida\, Mexico. He received his BFA in Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology\, NY in 1986. He is the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship and a NEA Southern Arts Federation grant. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum\, NY; The High Museum of Art\, GA; The Renwick Museum of American Art\, Washington\, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft + Design\, NC; Racine Museum of Art\, WI; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design\, NC; Museum of Art and Design\, NY\, Black Mountain College Museum\, NC; The Asheville Art Museum\, NC; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, LA; The Mobile Museum of Art\, AL\, and numerous corporate collections including Fidelity\, Wells Fargo\, Piedmont Natural Gas\, Duke Hospital\, and Wortham Center for the Performing Arts\, among others.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.
