SUMMARY:The Little Crafty at the NC Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Arboretum\, The Big Crafty\, and ArtsAVL are excited to announce The Little Crafty\, a new\, intimate craft market celebrating regional artists\, nature-inspired making\, and the creative spirit of Western North Carolina. \nTaking place Saturday\, February 7 and Sunday\, February 8\, from 1–6 p.m. in the Arboretum’s Auditorium\, The Little Crafty will feature a carefully curated group of artists whose work draws inspiration from the natural world — botanicals\, landscapes\, wildlife\, and the handmade traditions of the Blue Ridge. \nFramed by the Arboretum’s living collections and winter landscapes\, The Little Crafty invites visitors to engage with art that grows from nature meeting craftsmanship\, and the event is timely for warm Valentine’s Day gift-giving. \nThe weekend’s artists echo the imaginative\, nature-forward ethos of the Arboretum’s current exhibition TROLLS: A Field Study by artist Thomas Dambo\, creating a dialogue between art\, environment\, and community. \nAdmission: The Little Crafty is free to attend\, but there is a parking fee for The NC Arboretum. As part of the celebration\, Sunday\, February 8 will be a free Community Day\, with the Arboretum’s parking fee waived to encourage broad community participation.

SUMMARY:Inside the Imaginist's Workshop: Tommy Simpson Artist Talk\, Book Launch & Film
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the imaginative world of renowned artist and furniture maker Tommy Simpson during a special Artist Talk\, Book Launch\, and Film Screening celebrating his exhibition Head\, Heart & Hand at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. \nThis free\, public event brings together storytelling\, film\, and conversation for a rich\, behind-the-scenes look at Simpson’s decades-long creative practice. The morning includes a screening of Living in a World I Created (produced by Erick Wolken)\, the launch of The Art and Furniture of Tommy Simpson by author Oscar Fitzgerald\, and a presentation of artwork with an intimate conversation led by Simpson himself.\nAn “imaginist” at heart\, Simpson transforms functional furniture into vibrant\, three-dimensional canvases—blurring the lines between painting\, sculpture\, and design. Drawing from a childhood spent building with scrap wood and guided by intuition rather than formal training\, his work combines mixed woods\, found objects\, and whimsical imagery into richly textured\, story-filled pieces. His belief that different woods “speak” in their own voices has earned him national recognition\, including inclusion in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection.\nJoin us for this rare opportunity to experience the convergence of head\, heart\, and hand through film\, words\, and conversation—and to celebrate an artist whose work invites us to find wonder in the everyday and magic in the handmade.\nFriday\, February 6 | 10:30 AM–12:00 PM\nFree admission • No registration required • All are welcome

SUMMARY:Head\, Heart\, and Hand: Works by Tommy Simpson | Art Exhibition at Black Mountain Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:HEAD\, HEART\, AND HAND Works by Tommy Simpson\nOpening Reception: February 6th\nExhibition Runs: February 6 – March 1\, Monday – Friday\, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Free and Open to the Public \nBlack Mountain Center for the Arts is proud to present an exhibition of works by renowned artist Tommy Simpson\, whose imaginative approach to craft has captivated audiences for decades. An “imaginist” at heart\, Simpson transforms functional furniture into vibrant three-dimensional canvases that blur the boundaries between painting\, sculpture\, and design.\nKnown for his playful combination of mixed woods\, found objects\, and whimsical imagery\, Simpson’s work springs from a childhood spent creating with scrap wood and encouragement from his great-aunt Florence. Though he never formally studied furniture making\, Simpson has developed a distinctive visual language that engages viewers through rich textures\, unexpected materials\, and storytelling surfaces.\nEach piece in this exhibition embodies Simpson’s belief that different woods can speak to us in multiple ways—a philosophy that has earned him recognition in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection and beyond. His painted furniture invites us to reconsider the objects around us\, finding wonder in the everyday and magic in the handmade.\nJoin us for this rare opportunity to experience the convergence of head\, heart\, and hand in Tommy Simpson’s enchanting body of work. \nBlack Mountain Center for the Arts Free Admission | All Welcome.

SUMMARY:Modelface Comedy presents Corey Ryan Forrester
DESCRIPTION:Modelface Comedy brings the best comedians from all over the country to Asheville\, NC. This week we are excited to have Corey Ryan Forrester!! \nCorey’s love for comedy started when he was a toddler watching Carson (and then Leno) from a blanket on the floor next to his daddy\, Dale. By the second grade\, Corey had already informed his teachers that he would be a comedian and didn’t ever consider another profession. At 16\, he worked up the nerve to do his first open mic (lying about his age to be admitted into the club). \nCorey spent the next decade hawking jokes in dingy bars and comedy clubs at night\, then waking up to do random jobs to supplement his income. He was a house painter\, retail associate\, motorcycle salesman\, urine sample collector\, flower delivery boy\, hotel maid\, college textbook reseller\, and hay bailer… at one point\, he ran a family bakery with his mother and sister where he was considered the “Head Quiche Chef.” \nIn 2015 Corey traded in his chef’s hat for a full-time trucker hat. Under Corey’s trucker hat is a giant head\, and under that are surprisingly thought-provoking rants on society\, culture\, and politics. His stand-up blends humor and common sense into a high-energy act full of silly physical comedy\, recounting wild stories and emotionally-driven tangents. \nCorey dreams of being in the small club of EGOT winners. His creative output is nearly insatiable and propelled by his passion for writing\, performance\, and silliness. Choosing to live in his hometown of Chickamauga\, when Corey isn’t on the road touring internationally as part of the wellRED Comedy Tour\, he takes hours-long walks through the woods\, talks on the phone with his momma\, and makes live videos to destigmatize mental health. \nYou can find daily videos and writing across Corey’s platforms. He makes viral character videos and political satire sketches\, writes daily for his Substack subscribers\, works on his upcoming second book\, and produces more podcasts than you can count. Corey’s undeniable charm has garnered fans like Whoopi Goldberg\, Chelsea Clinton\, Leslie Jones\, and Dave Bautista. His greatest honor has been connecting with people of all kinds\, meeting fans on the road\, and making his family proud\, even if they cringe a little. \nDoors: 6:30 PM\nShow: 7:00 PM \nPREMIUM SEATING: $30.00\nDAY OF: $25.00\nADVANCED: $20.00 \n– AGES 18+\n– FULLY SEATED SHOW\n– LIMITED NUMBER OF PREMIUM SEATING TICKETS AVAILABLE* \n*premium seating is the front three rows

SUMMARY:PERSPECTIVES Artist Talk: Naomi Lindenfeld
DESCRIPTION:PERSPECTIVES: Naomi Lindenfeld\nJanuary 31\, 2026\, 11am | Free and Open to All\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street\, Asheville NC} \nOn Saturday\, January 31\, 2026 at 11am\, Naomi Lindenfeld will give a “Perspectives” artist talk in BMCM+AC’s upstairs gallery. This event is presented in conjunction with the opening of Dialogue: Lindenfeld + Lindenfeld\, an exhibition exploring artistic conversations between the work of Naomi Lindenfeld and her mother\, BMC alum Lore Kadden Lindenfeld. \nAbout Naomi: \nNaomi has developed a line of colored clay items which are intended for daily use as well as for gatherings and celebrations. The technique involves layering colored clay into a block. Patterns are created by pressing tools down into the block and then slicing it\, or rolling out the layered colored clay\, carving away strips and rolling it flat again to create a multi-dimensional effect. The flat clay is then hand-constructed into pieces that are tactile\, useful and decorative. In addition\, Naomi throws the layered colored clay on a wheel to form the pieces. She then facets the sides to reveal an agate effect or deeply carves the surface. This reveals mesmerizing striations of color that result in a great sense of depth and movement to the pieces. \nFlowing movement is the main feeling that Naomi hopes to convey in her work. Her inspiration is drawn from her love of dance\, patterns in the natural world that result from the movement of water and wind on materials like rock\, wood and shells. The colored clay technique allows one to work with colors while making a piece. Naomi loves to experiment with different color combinations to see how colors blend and contrast to create different moods. \nNaomi took her first pottery class at the age of 12\, continuing to work in clay in high school. She went on to earn a degree in ceramics from Boston University’s Program in Artisanry\, a program designed to prepare students to be professional craftspeople. During her time at B.U. Naomi observed another student who was experimenting with colored clay. Although it was still a few years before she got involved with this technique herself\, she began to be intrigued. \nAfter college she worked for several potters and eventually had the chance to do some of her own work\, which is when her experimentation with colored clay began. Naomi is one of the founding members in 1983 of the Brattleboro Clayworks\, a potter’s collective. The combination of discovering the wonders of colored clay and forming the group studio helped her aspirations fall into place and connect the work with her heart. \nNaomi has had the chance to share her enthusiasm of colored clay by teaching workshops at many craft institutes around New England\, focusing on this technique. Since the fall of 1998 she is the ceramics teacher at The Putney School\, a progressive boarding high school in Putney\, Vt. with a strong arts program.

SUMMARY:OPENING RECEPTION: Dialogue: Lindenfeld + Lindenfeld
DESCRIPTION:OPENING RECEPTION for Dialogue: Lindenfeld + Lindenfeld\nJanuary 30\, 2026\, 5:30–8pm | Free and Open to All\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street\, Asheville NC} \nJoin us for the opening reception for Dialogue: Lindenfeld + Lindenfeld hosted at BMCM+AC on Friday\, January 30\, 2026 from 5:30–8pm. \nAbout the exhibition: Dialogue: Lindenfeld + Lindenfeld \nLore Kadden Lindenfeld (1921 – 2010) emigrated from Germany to the US as a Jewish refugee in the late 1930s. She attended Black Mountain College from 1945-48 already equipped with sewing and embroidery skills. She was a student of both Josef and Anni Albers as well as Trude Guermonprez and Franziska Mayer\, all of whom fled Europe like her. Inspired by the Alberses and the Bauhaus tradition\, she worked as a designer for the New York textile industry. While there she met her husband-to-be\, physicist Peter Lindenfeld at a John Cage “Happening” at the 8th Street Club. She went on to have a career as a weaver\, fiber collage artist and as a college level weaving and art history teacher. \nThis exhibition presents the clay and mixed media work of Naomi Lindenfeld as she responded to a selection of her mother Lore’s innovative textiles. The opportunity allowed her to grow creatively and to honor her mother and her life’s work. The pieces created by mother and daughter function independently as well as in dynamic conversation with each other. \nNaomi Lindenfeld reflects: I grew up with my mother’s loom in our family’s living room\, hearing riveting stories of Black Mountain College\, its avant-garde\, experimental environment and brilliant\, unique personalities. As well\, I was exposed to many artists and craftspeople during my childhood. Not many years later I ended up with clay carving tools and a rolling pin in my own ceramics studio. I responded to the immediacy of clay and pursued it in college\, earning a degree in ceramics. While there I discovered the Japanese technique\, Nerikomi\, of layering colored clays to create patterns. I have been captivated by exploring many ways of working with colored clay ever since. More recently I have been working with mixed media featuring the patterns of tea stains. Both my method of working with clay and the tea art have a sense of movement\, abstract graphic quality\, nature-themed imagery and vivid color that echo my mother’s textiles. \nDialogue: Lindenfeld + Lindenfeld exemplifies the generational impact of Black Mountain College’s remarkable legacy as a cultural melting pot and rigorous laboratory for creative experimentation. The College’s approach to education mixed freedom and responsibility with self-reliance and community.
