Their 2022 debut\, produced by REM / Smithereens producer Don Dixon\, captured the ears and hearts of indie radio and streaming playlists across the U.S. and Europe. They have played extensively throughout the South and MidAtlantic in ‘22-’23 supporting The Connells\, Southern Culture On The Skids\, and alumni of Pylon\, and Fetchin Bones\, and The dB’s. \nTHE TRICK THREAT is out with its brand of alt pop rock originals. The band takes an approach to music that focuses on delivering inventive songs with artistic simplicity. Co-founded by lead singer Alana Flowers Gibson and bassist Glenn Gibson\, their influences include the Beatles and the Eagles\, while also incorporating modern indie pop-rock sounds in the vein of Spoon\, Tennis\, and Wilco. They’re continuously exploring new ways to expand their style and sound.

The Friends of Music at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will present a concert\, “Songs My Daddy Taught Me” on Sunday afternoon\, August 11\, at four o’clock in the Parish Hall across the street from the church\, located at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. \nLinda Edwards\, soprano and pianist Dewitt Tipton will perform familiar songs from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40\,s and favorite “old time” hymns. In her 50-year music and theatre career\, Linda has sung opera\, musical theatre\, oratorio\, recitals\, cabaret\, and performed as symphony soloist all over the world. She made her international debut in Tel Aviv\, with Leonard Bernstein\, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra\, as Cunegonde in CANDIDE\, sang early music as soloist for Aspen Music Festival\, and toured Europe as Carlotta in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. As symphony guest soloist\, she has sung with conductors John Mauceri\, Helmutt Rilling\, Sergiu Comissiona\, and Keith Lockhart. Opera roles include Norina (DON PASQUALE)\, Nanetta (FALSTAFF)\, Sophie (WERTHER)\, The Witch (HANSEL & GRETEL)\, and the title role in THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF. For over 35 years\, Linda has performed at Flat Rock Playhouse\, the State Theatre of North Carolina\, in a variety of roles which include Madame Thenardier (LES MISERABLES)\, Truvy and Clairee (STEEL MAGNOLIAS)\, Mrs. Potts (BEAUTY & THE BEAST)\, Fairy Godmother (CINDERELLA)\, Adelaide (GUYS & DOLLS)\, Prudie (PUMP BOYS & DINETTES)\, Ursula (LITTLE MERMAID)\, and Madame Arcati (BLITHE SPIRIT). She recently received the Southern California Desert Sun Award as Outstanding Actress for her work as Florence Foster Jenkins in SOUVENIR (Coyote Stage Works\, Palm Springs). She has performed over 600 performances of MAN OF LA MANCHA across the country. \nMr. Tipton said\, “Ms. Edwards is a brilliant singing actress\, equally talented in comic and serious theatrical roles. Her credentials are impeccable. I am thrilled that we will perform together again.” \nThe concert is free to the public though contributions will be greatly accepted to fund Friends of Music. John serves as an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of English & Philosophy at Drexel University and was the inaugural Wilma Dykeman writer-in-residence at UNC Asheville. His debut novel\, Three-Fifths\, was named one of the best books of the year by the Chicago Tribune and Booklist. His second novel\, After the Lights Go Out\, was named a Best Book of Summer 2022 by BookRiot and Publishers Weekly\, and named a Booklist Editor’s Choice Best Book of 2022. \nJason Mott is the author of two poetry collections and four novels: The Returned\, The Wonder of All Things\, The Crossing\, and Hell Of A Book. His first novel\, The Returned\, was a New York Times bestseller and was turned into a TV series that ran for two seasons. He has a BFA in Fiction and an MFA in Poetry\, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His poetry and fiction have appeared in various literary journals\, and his fourth novel\, Hell of a Book\, was named the winner of the National Book Award for Fiction\, 2021. Most recently\, he was selected as a 2024 National Endowment of the Arts Creative Writing Fellow.

These sessions were the first performances of traditional music from the Southern Appalachians to be documented for commercial sale to a broader American audience. This event accelerated the evolution of American vernacular and homemade music into the emerging genre of country music\, which is now known around the globe. Despite its historical importance\, the OKeh recordings made in Asheville have never been reissued and the impacts of these sessions have never been publicly explored and presented.
