The show features patchwork textiles and inflatable sculptures made from fur\, satin\, pleather\, fringe\, and ripstop\, the show’s namesake\, a woven nylon material that allows the pieces to hold air.  On view are monumentally scaled works that inflate in response to the viewer.  \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The Blue Ridge Music Center and North Carolina Arts Foundation will host an information session about the Historic Asheville Sessions project from 5 to 7 p.m.\, Thursday\, Aug. 15\, at Citizen Vinyl in Asheville. \nHistoric Asheville Sessions Project Information Session\nWhen: 5 to 7 p.m.\, Thursday\, Aug. 15\nWhere: Citizen Vinyl\, 14 O’Henry Ave.\, Asheville\, N.C.\nAdmission: Free\nAdditional information: BlueRidgeMusicCenter.org \nThe public is invited to learn about the project\, which presents\, interprets\, and celebrates recordings made by OKeh General Phonograph Corporation in the summer of 1925 in Western North Carolina. These sessions were the first performances of traditional music from the Southern Appalachians to be documented for commercial sale to a broader American audience. This event accelerated the evolution of American vernacular and homemade music into the emerging genre of country music\, which is now known around the globe. Despite its historical importance\, the OKeh recordings made in Asheville have never been reissued and the impacts of these sessions have never been publicly explored and presented. In fact\, few North Carolinians are aware of this event of international significance. \nThe information session will feature presentations about the project and the significance of the sessions by Ted Olson and Wayne Martin. Guests will also hear a sampling of the songs recorded during the sessions.

Alabama Blues Hall of Fame member Mac Arnold’s first band included James Brown on piano. He toured and recorded with the Muddy Waters Band and recorded LPs with Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker. Mac moved to Los Angeles and produced Soul Train with his friend Don Cornelius. He even played bass on the Sanford & Son television show when he wasn’t playing bass for Otis Redding and B.B. King. After retiring from show business to become an organic farmer\, Mac is back with his band and a “plate full” of CDs\, building a new foundation in blues\, soul\, and funk.

DESCRIPTION:Carpenter / Cohen + Sounding Arrow play the Citizen Vinyl stage on Saturday\, August 17. Doors at 7 p.m.\, show at 8 p.m. $15 advance / $18 at the door. \nJoshua Carpenter and Finn Cohen first met in the early 2000s\, when their respective bands — Piedmont Charisma and The White Octave — crossed paths in Asheville\, NC. A few years later\, Carpenter joined The Nein\, a band that Cohen had founded. Then Cohen moved to Russia for several years\, and Carpenter began releasing solo records while also touring with Floating Action and the Detroit legend Rodriguez. In 2022\, after years of flirting with the idea\, Carpenter and Cohen agreed to start writing together again. They traded voice memos and home demos between four different recording/mixing sessions at the homes of generous friends across the state of North Carolina. Their self-titled debut was released June 28\, 2024.  \nSounding Arrow is the musical project by recording artist Scott Kinnebrew. The debut record Loving Is Breathing\, released in September 2017\, is a call to life\, love and the spirit of compassion. While sitting comfortably in the contemporary Indie Folk genre\, there is a patina to Sounding Arrow’s sound that’s indicative of earlier musical influences. Since moving back to Asheville\, NC\, from LA in 2020\, Kinnebrew began playing them again\, having found a group of musicians that shared the right chemistry. Production on a new record is slated to begin in 2024.
