DESCRIPTION:Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues returns to Hendersonville Theatre in August for HT’s Hometown Sound Music Series! Alabama Blues Hall of Fame member Mac Arnold’s first band included James Brown on piano. He toured and recorded with the Muddy Waters Band and recorded LPs with Otis Spann and John Lee Hooker. Mac moved to Los Angeles and produced Soul Train with his friend Don Cornelius. He even played bass on the Sanford & Son television show when he wasn’t playing bass for Otis Redding and B.B. King. After retiring from show business to become an organic farmer\, Mac is back with his band and a “plate full” of CDs\, building a new foundation in blues\, soul\, and funk.

SUMMARY:Carpenter / Cohen + Sounding Arrow
DESCRIPTION:Carpenter / Cohen + Sounding Arrow play the Citizen Vinyl stage on Saturday\, August 17. Doors at 7 p.m.\, show at 8 p.m. $15 advance / $18 at the door. \nJoshua Carpenter and Finn Cohen first met in the early 2000s\, when their respective bands — Piedmont Charisma and The White Octave — crossed paths in Asheville\, NC. A few years later\, Carpenter joined The Nein\, a band that Cohen had founded. Then Cohen moved to Russia for several years\, and Carpenter began releasing solo records while also touring with Floating Action and the Detroit legend Rodriguez. In 2022\, after years of flirting with the idea\, Carpenter and Cohen agreed to start writing together again. They traded voice memos and home demos between four different recording/mixing sessions at the homes of generous friends across the state of North Carolina. Their self-titled debut was released June 28\, 2024.  \nSounding Arrow is the musical project by recording artist Scott Kinnebrew. The debut record Loving Is Breathing\, released in September 2017\, is a call to life\, love and the spirit of compassion. While sitting comfortably in the contemporary Indie Folk genre\, there is a patina to Sounding Arrow’s sound that’s indicative of earlier musical influences. Since moving back to Asheville\, NC\, from LA in 2020\, Kinnebrew began playing them again\, having found a group of musicians that shared the right chemistry. Production on a new record is slated to begin in 2024.

Organized by Paddling Magazine and Rapid Media\, sponsored by Headwaters Outfitters\, and hosted by New Belgium Brewing\, this event is a fundraiser for MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper program\, including Swim Guide and the French Broad Paddle Trail. \nSince 2006\, the Paddling Film Festival World Tour has showcased the best paddling films. You’ll be inspired to explore rivers\, lakes\, and oceans\, push extremes\, embrace the paddling lifestyle\, and appreciate the wild places. Since Rapid Media launched the festival in 2006\, the World Tour has screened 959 times to more than 282\,864 audience members. Rapid Media has awarded $71\,000 to paddling filmmakers and helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for charitable causes. The Paddling Film Festival World Tour has become one of the largest paddling events in the world. \nDoors to New Belgium’s Brewhouse will open at 6:00 PM\, and the show will begin around 6:30. We’ll have several short films before an intermission\, which will feature a short presentation about the work of MountainTrue’s French Broad Riverkeeper program and Headwaters Outfitters\, and a raffle featuring a variety of outdoor gear and swag. Following the intermission\, there will be one longer film and a couple more short clips before wrapping up for the evening at 9:00. Raffle tickets will be sold at the event. \nHungry or Thirsty? New Belgium Brewing will have a food truck on site and beer for sale inside the event space. MountainTrue will have popcorn available for free and non-alcoholic beverages for sale. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages. \nTickets are $15.00 in advance for adults and $20.00 at the door (if available). When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse\, the two set off on a journey to break the curse\, and wind up changed forever. \nAsheville Junior Theater has re-imagined how to tell this Sondheim classic with an artsy and creative twist. Expect minimal sets and mature costuming\, with a keen focus on acting\, singing and movement. SUMMARY:Life Like Water & Høly River
DESCRIPTION:Life Like Water\, featuring Matt Smith on pedal steel\, dobro and electric guitar is set to perform at Hawk & Hawthorne on Saturday\, August 24. Richmond\, Virginia’s Høly River will also perform.  \nLife Like Water is the creation of multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter\, David Matters. It was initially started as a way for him to process his turbulent past and navigate an uncertain future\, but it has since evolved into a communal effort to celebrate the human experience.  \nWith a focus on hypnotic rhythms\, heartfelt lyrics\, and melodies that contain flavors of Africa\, Ireland and the Middle East\, the music of this eclectic ensemble is sure to uplift and inspire.  \nThe concert will also feature the music of Høly River. The music of Høly River carries the message of humanity’s need for reconnection with the earth. Mystically political and wholeheartedly grassroots\, this DIY band finds themselves playing on large festival stages as well as backyard fire pits of intentional communities around the world. \nHøly River was founded by multi-instrumentalists Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price. Fusing together the pulse of drone pop\, worldly instrumentation\, this experimental music would best be described as a landscape\, as a biome all its own. This musical phenomenon has come to be known as “Earth folk\,” a type of music inspired thematically by the natural environment: flora\, fauna\, soil\, stars\, and the human experience. From harmonium engulfed melodies to mouth-harp stomp grass\, Høly River taps into an embodied and innate celebration of internal and external worlds\, attempting to bring them closer together with each beat. On record or in-person\, a listener is entranced in the soaring vocal ballads bathed in the moonlight of dance beats and folk-inspired roots.  \nBefore the evening performance\, David Matters and Valerie Scott will also present The Creative Body: Legs and Feet\, an embodied anatomy journey accompanied by multi-instrumental\, live-looped melodies and rhythms. \n“Come explore the form and function of our legs and feet\, the symbolic meaning of these body parts\, and how creative play can deepen our connection to our physical and expressive selves.”
