SUMMARY:An Evening with FREE PLANET RADIO and special guests\, Adam Maalouf and Aparna Keshaviah
DESCRIPTION:Asheville’s acclaimed global-jazz duo\, Free Planet Radio\, will perform live at the newly relaunched White Horse Black Mountain\, on the afternoon of Sunday\, September 8th\, 2024\, joined by virtuosic multi-instrumentalist\, Adam Maalouf\, and classically trained Bharatanatyam dancer and innovative movement artist\, Aparna Keshaviah. \nFree Planet Radio is a dynamic and genre-defying band that blends elements of jazz\, world music\, and improvisation into a gorgeous and exciting musical experience. Comprising of world-renowned musicians\, River Guerguerian on percussion and Chris Rosser on piano and multi-instruments\, they are known for their rich and textured soundscapes\, intricate rhythms\, and virtuosic instrumentation. The band’s aim is always to transport listeners on a captivating journey while “exploring the infinite and seamless relationships between musical cultures through the universal language of sound.” \nOriginally a trio with twice Grammy-Award winning bass player\, Eliot Wadopian\, who passed away in 2021\, Free Planet Radio continues to create and thrive as a duo. River Guerguerian and Chris Rosser remain deeply committed to the creative process\, composing new music all the time and continually collaborating with an exciting array of curated guest artists both on and off the stage. With their extensive catalog of songs and new influences garnered from each collaboration\, every performance is a wholly unique experience of musical exploration and improvisational brilliance that will wow you! \nThe upcoming concert on September 8th at the legendary White Horse Black Mountain will include both new and longtime-favorite original compositions by Free Planet Radio\, joined on most pieces by virtuosic multi-instrumentalist\, Adam Maalouf\, who will also share songs from his extensive personal catalog. Adam Maalouf\, who has been featured on prestigious stages around the world and studied with some of the greatest Master musicians alive\, has been collaborating with River Guerguerian and Chris Rosser for over a dozen years whenever circumstances allow. On select pieces throughout the performance\, their music will also be graced with extra dazzle by the talented Aparna Keshaviah\, a dancer with extraordinarily agile and elegant movement and musical awareness. Aparna Keshaviah is an American-born daughter of south Indian immigrants and grew up training in the ancient artform of Bharatanatyam as well as contemporary Western modalities of movement. As a movement artist\, she celebrates both her family’s ancestral roots and her experience as an American through hybridization and innovation.

SUMMARY:She Returns From War + Erika Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Lonesome Station Presents: She Returns From War + Erika Lewis on Friday\, September 6. 7 p.m. doors / 8 p.m. show. $15 advance / $20 at the door. \nFrom Charleston\, South Carolina\, Americana music artist Hunter Park is defining what it means to not only live in the modern south\, but to be a trans woman and artist within this landscape. Combining folk-infused vocal melodies and evocative lyrics that capture the unfiltered human experience\, She Returns From War is taking her seat in the Americana music world with grace\, strength\, and passion. In 2023\, the project shows no signs of slowing down. From opening for Bernie Sanders at his presidential rally in Charleston\, to performing at national festivals like Stagecoach and High Water Festival and with artists such as Pat Benatar\, Band of Horses\, and Nikki Lane\, She Returns From War is sharing with the world what the modern south should look and feel like: inclusive\, compassionate\, unfiltered\, and loving. \nKnown for her lengthy tenure touring and busking with beloved New Orleans jazz band Tuba Skinny\, prolific songwriter and singer Erika Lewis has been churning out American originals all her own for the past several years. From classic country to cosmic Americana to dreamy indie folk\, Lewis continues to dip her toes more deeply into an ever-expanding pool of roots music styles. Her latest album\, A Walk Around the Sun brings Lewis’ solo work out from the wings to center stage\, beneath a spotlight nearly impossible to ignore.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Ginny Ruffner Reforestation of the Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination\, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Caleb Caudle & The Sweet Critters
DESCRIPTION:Caleb Caudle & The Sweet Critters are rolling up to the Citizen Vinyl stage on Friday\, September 13. 8 p.m. show\, 7 p.m. doors. $15 in advance / $18 at the door. \nThrough sometimes shadowy arrangements that creep and lurk\, Caleb Caudle continues to mine both the brightest and murkiest corners of his imagination\, finding that purest of points where tenderness and grit collide\, inspired by musical heroes like Buddy Miller and Guy Clark\, and mentors like Elizabeth Cook and John Paul White. It was White who Caudle tapped to produce Sweet Critters\, along with Ben Tanner\, at the duo’s Florence\, Alabama studio Sun Drop Sound. \nThese songs are a showcase of Caudle’s singular command of language. For Caudle\, details are the last frontier in a world where thousands of new songs are created every day. As such\, he weaves his intricate tales of redemption\, sacrifice\, forgiveness\, and loss with the colorful threads of living\, breathing characters and all the rich idiosyncrasies and ephemera that fill out their worlds. \nCaudle and his band have played Stagecoach\, Cayamo\, Luck Reunion\, Mountain Stage\, Merlefest\, Americanafest\, The Long Road (UK)\, AMAUK (UK)\, and recently supported Marty Stuart\, Steve Earle\, Hayes Carll\, Elizabeth Cook\, Brent Cobb\, Charles Wesley Godwin\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, and many more.
