SUMMARY:Historic Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Flat Rock History \nTours for St. John in the Wilderness \nFLAT ROCK\, N.C. Tours are again available for the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock. \nThe church and churchyard (cemetery) tours are sponsored by the St. John Episcopal Church Docents. They start inside the Carriage Door entrance of the church. \nThe tours are free but advance reservations must be made online through the church’s website\, www.stjohnflatrock.org/tours. Space is limited for each tour. \nThe guided tours will be held the third Saturday in November and December. \nThey begin promptly at 11 a.m. and last about an hour. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. There will be no rain dates. \nThe historically significant churchyard contains graves of un-named 19th century people who were enslaved as well as distinguished political figures\, and local citizens. \nThe church is located at 1895 Greenville Highway. For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org. \nSt. John in the Wilderness History \nIn 1827\, Charles Baring\, a member of the Baring banking family of England\, built a home in Flat Rock. He and his wife\, Susan\, wanted a summer place to escape the oppressive heat\, humidity\, and malaria of the South Carolina Lowcountry where they lived. \nThe Barings built a chapel on the property of their newly constructed home. Soon after it was built the small wooden structure burned down in a woods fire. In 1833 work began on a second church built of handmade brick. \nIn August of 1836 the Barings deeded their chapel to the Diocese of North Carolina and 20 members of the Flat Rock “summer colony” formed an Episcopal parish. In the 1890s when the Missionary District of Asheville (later Diocese of Western North Carolina) was formed\, St. John in the Wilderness transferred its affiliation. It is the oldest parish in the diocese. \nWith almost all the church members traveling back to the Lowcountry after the summer season\, the church mainly operated during summer months for its first 120 years. So rapid was the growth of the Flat Rock community during the 1830s and 1840s that the parish membership outgrew the capacity of the small chapel. In the early 1850s the decision was made to rebuild the church\, essentially doubling its size. With only a few minor modifications the structure was completed in 1852. It is the one that stands today.

SUMMARY:Lonesome Station Presents: Hayden Pedigo + Special Guest
DESCRIPTION:Lonesome Station Presents: Hayden Pedigo + Special Guest at Citizen Vinyl on Sunday\, November 17. 7pm doors and 8pm show. $15 advance / $20 at the door. \nSomething happened. Between the summer of The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored and the night before Christmas Eve 2023\, the music of Hayden Pedigo transformed. Back-to-back months of touring lead to incredible outcomes: First\, his chops became more finely honed than ever before\, lending a precision and versatility to the songs that would surprise even the most-seasoned Pedigo listener. Second\, Hayden lived in these songs\, translating them through improvisation and dynamic exploration into emotional juggernauts – instrumental music that sings to the audience. \nLanding in his hometown of Amarillo\, Texas for the holidays to perform at The Amarillo Globe-News Center – home of the Amarillo Symphony – a gorgeous and beguiling set was recorded in front of a crowd of nearly five hundred people. Put to tape by Nathan and Joe Luscombe\, mixed by Davis Hart\, and mastered by Stephan Mathieu\, Mexican Summer proudly presents Hayden Pedigo’s Live in Amarillo\, Texas\, an album that could one day be mentioned in the same breath as John Fahey’s The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick and Townes Van Zandt’s Live at the Old Quarter.

SUMMARY:No More Climate Havens: Educating for Reality
DESCRIPTION:Our response to the climate crisis has entered a new understanding—there is no longer a false sense of a climate haven. As institutions of higher education have the potential to both model practices and educate students on ways to address climate change\, this panel explores the role of higher education in taking on this responsibility. What can institutions of higher education do to most effectively influence a societal shift and make taking action on climate change a central part of their mission? \nPlease join us for a discussion with this expert panel of educators\, writers\, and practitioners who are leading the way in thinking about how our educational system can better serve and motivate the next cohort of climate professionals. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Keith McDade\, Director of Warren Wilson College’s Master of Science in Applied Climate Studies Program. \n“Climate Action Now” is Warren Wilson College’s new campus-wide initiative that integrates climate action into all aspects of the College’s experiential learning mission—academics\, work learning\, and community engagement. The world needs a new educational model that provides students with the skills that enable them to be inspired by the possibilities of action rather than defeated by the challenges posed by climate change. As described by President Damián Fernández\, “Global climate change is a transdisciplinary problem—the most pressing one we are confronting. It requires natural sciences\, humanities\, and social sciences to address its multiple ramifications. It impacts the arts as an expression of the human experience\, and creatives are finding ways to represent what they are witnessing and deepen understanding.” \nhttps://events.warren-wilson.edu/event/no-more-climate-havens-educating-for-reality
