SUMMARY:Capitol Fools
DESCRIPTION:Providing much-needed comic relief from election season mania\, this cathartic political lampoon leaves no politician safe from its witty antics\, with rapid-fire comedy that puts the “mock” in democracy. This season’s hilarious new production stems from the same comedic masterminds that created the past-season fan-favorite Capitol Steps\, founded by a group of Senate staffers to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

SUMMARY:Mike Farris | Sundays on the River Series
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss Grammy winner Mike Farris in an intimate concert by the French Broad River in Olivette Asheville! \nGrammy winner Mike Farris is an artist’s artist\, a musician’s musician\, celebrated and revered by his fellow performers. It’s no wonder. He’s the one who brings everything to his music and to every live performance\, every time. \nMike is a Grammy\, Americana and Dove Music Award winner with multiple solo recordings\, including his last full length release; “Silver and Stone.” His iconic personal appearances include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert honoring Aretha Franklin. \nHe was featured on Patty Griffin’s Grammy-winning “Downtown Church\,” and appeared with Griffin on Austin City Limits. He shared the stage with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Double Trouble on the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame special and made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2018. \nMike is also the frontman of the mainstream rock group The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies\, who launched onto the scene in the 90’s with a major label release. They quickly became darlings of the critics and fans alike due in part to the extraordinary and controlled chaos of their lead singer’s live vocal performances and stage charisma. \nAn amalgamation of the spiritual and the earthly\, of gospel and rock ‘n’ roll\, of faith and fire\, Mike Farris will bring what Rolling Stone Country describes as a “supersized voice filled with the electricity of Saturday night and the godly grace of Sunday mornings.

SUMMARY:Learning to Dance with Dementia
DESCRIPTION:Explore an Afternoon of Awareness \nLearning to Dance with Dementia: When to Lead\, When to Follow and When to Get Out of the Way \nThe Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will present a free workshop “Learning to Dance with Dementia: When to Lead\, When to Follow and When to Get Out of the Way.” on Thursday\, October 17 from 1pm until 4pm in the Parish Hall across the street from the church\, located at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock. \nUnlock the secrets to compassionate and effective dementia care at this workshop with Mary Donnelly\, a dynamic dementia consultant followed by a panel discussion. This interactive session offers insight and strategies to help caregivers navigate the delicate balance of communicating with a person whose brain is changing. Discover how to harmonize your approach with the unique needs of the person in your care\, fostering a more fulfilling less stressful caregiving experience. Join us to enhance your skills and learn how to dance gracefully through the challenges of dementia care. \n“We are providing this afternoon program\, because dementia is becoming so prevalent in society that we feel the need to educate our friends and neighbors” said Linda Giltner\, an event organizer. \nDementia has and is touching so many of our loved ones. At the beginning we do not understand why they are not behaving or responding to us and situations as they had in the past. Then our question is\, what is happening? We are trying to present information and ways to deal with this disease called DEMENTIA! \nAnother event organizer Ronnie Doty said\, “I have been a fan of Mary Donnelly since attending Caregivers College at MemoryCare when my husband was diagnosed with dementia. Several years later when I’d been a caregiver for more than six years\, I thought St. John would be the perfect place for her to share her wealth of wisdom. Caregiving is tiring and taxing and can begin to affect one’s health before we can become aware of it! I know Mary’s presentation will help caregivers think differently about living with someone with dementia.” \nLimited seating is available for this seminar but participants must RSVP by visiting http://bit.ly/dancewithdementia. For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783. \nMore on the Presenter \nMary Donnelly is past Board President for MemoryCare\, a nationally-recognized nonprofit clinic in Asheville. She founded and coordinates the MemoryCaregivers Network\, writes a bi-monthly e-newsletter\, Caregiver Network News\, and is part of the teaching staff for their annual caregiver education series. She is the author of The MemoryCaregivers Collection\, an anthology for MemoryCare. Mary is also on the staff of national dementia expert Teepa Snow\, holding multiple roles as Trainer\, Consultant\, Mentor\, and Speaker. Mary serves on the Steering Committee of Dementia Friendly Western North Carolina\, a grassroots organization promoting dementia awareness and education. She facilitates five area support groups\, provides family consulting across the country\, offers on-site staff dementia training for long-term care facilities\, and is a lively speaker on dementia-related issues.

SUMMARY:The Wildwoods at Asheville Outpost (at Grey Eagle) October 17
DESCRIPTION:NEBRASKA FOLK-AMERICANA TRIO THE WILDWOODS TAKE TO CONCERT STAGES THIS SPRING AND SUMMER AS THEY PREPARE THEIR FOURTH FULL-LENGTH ALBUM \nBy Mario Tarradell \nIf music is a salve\, then The Wildwoods could heal the world. The folk-Americana trio from Lincoln\, Nebraska takes to guitar\, violin\, upright bass\, and microphones with the simple purity of peaceful forests that soothe the soul. Whether performing an original song or putting their uncluttered stamp on timeless tunes\, The Wildwoods exude melodic warmth. \nThe Wildwoods are violinist Chloe Gose\, guitarist Noah Gose\, and bassist Andrew Vaggalis. Together\, they have spent the better part of a decade carefully stitching a delicate sonic blanket fortified by lovely harmonies and wistful lyrics. The group’s third full-length album\, 2023’s Foxfield Saint John\, comes buoyed by two standout tracks: the gorgeous “Thirteen Sailboats” and the homespun “West Virginia Rain.” \nChloe and Noah\, who are married\, and Andrew are currently at work on a fourth full-length opus planned for release later in 2024. Bask in their musical magic October 17 at the Grey Eagle Outpost\, 521 Amboy Road in Asheville\, NC. The show starts at 7pm (doors @ 6pm); all ages are welcome. For more info\, please click HERE. \n“On stage\, our gentle harmonies weave together like threads within a rich tapestry of sound\,” says Noah. “Through our songs\, inspired by the individuals we’ve crossed paths with and the landscapes we’ve traversed\, we strive to engage the audience in a conversation\, inviting them to connect with our narratives and immerse themselves in the vivid imagery our music evokes.” \nWith artistic influences such as Nickel Creek\, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings\, and Watchhouse\, as well as a penchant for making music that’s both emotional and intricate\, The Wildwoods are steadily becoming a potent entity in the folk scene. In 2023\, The Wildwoods enjoyed being finalists in two high-profile band competitions – FreshGrass Music Festival and VHS “Gems in the Rough.” Also\, their songwriting strengths have been recognized by semi-final placements in the International Songwriting competition with tracks such as “Untitled” and “Way of Train.” \nCloser to home\, The Wildwoods consistently earn acclaim at the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards. And in 2022\, they were named “Best Band” by the Lincoln Journal Star’s Lincoln Choice Awards. Along the way\, the trio also recorded two other full-length efforts Sweet Nostalgia (2017) and Across a Midwest Sky (2019). \nIt is onstage that The Wildwoods prove their creative mettle. They are frequently invited back to venues and festivals such as Summerfest and the Oyster Ridge Music Festival. They have shared stages with artists such as Sierra Ferrell\, Mighty Poplar\, Melissa Carper\, Aiofe O’Donovan\, Joe Nichols\, and Jamie Wyatt. \n“For us\, performing live is not just about sharing our music\,” says Noah\, “but about creating a communal experience with the audience that binds us together through the power of song.” \nGet to know The Wildwoods on social media: Follow the band on TikTok\, Instagram\, Spotify\, and Facebook. Subscribe to their YouTube channel. And visit The Wildwoods website for more insight on this enchanting folk-Americana music trio.
