SUMMARY:Curator’s Talk | Hidden in Plain View—Art in Southern Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Co-curator of “Warp\, Weft\, and the Grid”\, Kathleen Curtis Wilson \nCurator Kathleen Curtis Wilson will present a series of photographs and share personal stories about her collection of bed coverlets woven by women in southern Appalachia\, 1850–1930. An appreciation of Appalachian weaving was hindered by stereotypical images of Appalachia as a poverty-ridden\, art-poor region. These images and a lack of women’s material culture studies in the region once made it easy to dismiss Appalachia as void of objects of art\, creativity\, and design worthy of national attention. \nToday\, graphic artists and laypersons will appreciate the simple designs of early coverlet patterns for the straight lines\, accuracy\, and bold color choices of this distinctive artistic tradition. \nThe woven coverlets images presented during Wilson’s presentation make it apparent that many southern Appalachian weavers did not put away their looms in the nineteenth century but made a conscious decision to continue to weave and preserve beautiful objects for their own pleasure\, as gifts for family members\, or in celebration of important events. \nKathleen Curtis Wilson is the author of five non-fiction books: “The Quiet Work of Women” (2001\, reprinting 2026); “Uplifting the South—Mary Mildred Sullivan’s Legacy for Appalachia” (2005); “Irish People\, Irish Linen” (2011); “Dancing at the Warm Springs Hotel” (2022); and “Adventurous Max Flax” (2023)\, an educational children’s book. Her first novel\, “The Fabric of Wishful Thinking”. (available 2026). \nWilson served as honorary fellow at both University of Ulster\, Northern Ireland\, and Virginia Humanities\, Charlottesville\, Virginia. She has given scores of public speeches and lectures at professional conferences in the United States and abroad. Born in Michigan\, Wilson studied weaving at The Cranbrook Schools. She established and operated Old Abingdon Weavers in Southwest Virginia from 1983–1993. She lives in Blacksburg\, Virginia.

SUMMARY:Scott Low
DESCRIPTION:The Grey Eagle and Worthwhile Sounds Present\nPATIO SHOW: SCOTT LOW\nSunday\, July 12\n3pm\nALL AGES \nLIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE \nScott Low is a Southern songwriter with a bluesman’s heart\, a folk singer’s storytelling\, and a river guide’s patience. His most recent albums—Struttin’ Round Town (2025) and The Appalachian Blues (2024)—dig deep into the soul of the rural South\, blending gritty guitar work\, slow-burn vocals\, and road-worn lyricism. From swaggering blues-rock grooves to stripped-down acoustic confessionals\, these records trace a life shaped by heartbreak\, resilience\, and the crooked backroads of Appalachia. \nWhen he’s not on stage\, Scott finds solace with a fly rod in hand\, casting into the cold\, clear creeks of North Georgia and the Carolinas. That connection to the river shapes his music—intentional\, free-flowing\, and grounded in something older than the road itself. Fly fishing isn’t just a hobby; it’s a rhythm\, a reset\, and a reminder that the best songs—like the best casts—come when you stop forcing it.

SUMMARY:COPTIC BOUND JOURNAL WORKSHOP WITH ERIN KEANE
DESCRIPTION:Handmade journals are a joy to use for anything and everything\, any day\, every day. Coptic binding is a historical method of constructing a book by sewing folded sections of paper and attaching them to hard covers. Bookbinders use this binding for its beauty with an exposed spine\, functionality with pages that open flat\, and historical roots to perpetuate time-honored traditions. \nIn this class\, we will create a beautiful blank journal using Paired Needle Coptic Stitch\, which is a specific form of Coptic binding that uses multiple needles and multiple threads. Your journal will have a lovely chain stitch at every sewing station\, and it will be structurally strong and highly functional. \nAll materials and tools will be provided\, so you can arrive empty handed and relax into the experience. If you already have personal bookbinding tools and find them most comfortable\, please feel welcome to bring along. For the book covers\, I’ll have a variety of decorative papers to choose from including Nepalese Lokta\, Indian cotton\, Japanese Chiyogami. If you prefer your own decorative paper\, please feel welcome to bring along (for space and efficiency\, please pre-cut the paper to 8.5” x 11”). \nAll skill levels welcome. I look forward to working together and reveling in the stitching goodness!

SUMMARY:Straight No Chaser Beach Bash
DESCRIPTION:If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers\, ties\, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses… think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced\, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase and a long list of accomplishments including 2 RIAA Gold Certified albums\, over 1.5 million concert tickets sold\, over 1 billion streams on Pandora\, and over 2 million albums sold worldwide. Straight No Chaser is the real deal\, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor.
