SUMMARY:In Conversation | Learning to See: Photographer Hazel Larsen Archer at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Join summer intern Sophie Weiser as she explores the incredible life and work of Hazel Larsen Archer\, the first full-time photography teacher at Black Mountain College (BMC). During her nine years at BMC (1944-1953) Archer developed her unique method of “learning to see” using the camera as a tool. Weiser’s talk will also explore Archer’s experience with disability and how she navigated life on BMC Campus while producing a dazzling array of photos\, including her captivating portraits of fellow BMC students and teachers\, such as Josef and Anni Albers\, Ruth Asawa\, and Merce Cunningham. \nBio: \nSophie Weiser is a summer intern at the Asheville Art Museum\, working with the Learning and Engagement Department’s Summer Art Camp. She is going into her third year at Trinity College Dublin\, where she majors in Classics\, Ancient History and Archaeology\, with a focus in Classical Civilization. From the ages of three to seven she lived with her parents and twin sister in Asheville\, and has continued to return to the area throughout her life. Her time in the robust local art scene of Asheville and its surrounding areas has been integral in developing her commitment to and involvement with the arts and museum world.

SUMMARY:Chris Acker and the Growing Boys w/ Creekbed Carter Hogan
DESCRIPTION:STANDING ROOM ONLY \nCHRIS ACKER & THE GROWING BOYS\nIn a genre full of tall tales and marketable lies\, New Orleans’ Chris Acker crafts candid songs – weaving his wit and woes into a body of work that exposes the stale plight of the American Songster to the honest\, and sometimes hilarious\, light of day.\nIn the tradition of Guthrie and Prine\, Chris lends a quavering voice to the half-rotten romance of the unremarkable and unrefined. Regardless if you’re sitting by a backyard fire on a muggy Louisiana night or standing stage-side in some far flung town\, when you hear Chris Acker playing\, you’re hearing the end result of countless hours of observing the masters of the craft…and the end result of repeating their mistakes. \nFrom the folk revival through the golden age of country music\, deafened by punk shows and brass bands alike\, Chris’s songwriting is a nod to the absurd yet muted brilliance that inhabits the molded corners of the bars he patrons and cratered street he treads\, paired with a pained honesty that merits a long second look. \nAcker released his fourth full-length album\, Famous Lunch\, on Gar Hole Records in October of 2024. Famous Lunch contains some of his best work yet: laid back\, country-rockers like “Wouldn’t Do For You (Buddy)” and “Shit Surprise” (which Paste Magazine called a “song of the year contender” in 2024)\, a few raucous\, bar-ready joints like “Don’t You Know (Who I Think I Am)” and “Bunn Machine”\, and tender\, folky triumphs like “Stubborn Eyes” and “Eyelash”\, all showcasing Chris’ gift of building “vivid scenes at an impressively low word count” (No Depression). \nAcker tours solo or with his band The Growing Boys — Zach Thomas (bass)\, Nikolai Shveitser (pedal steel)\, Dave Hammer (guitar\, vocals)\, Sam Gelband (drums\, vocals)\, and occasionally Howe Pearson (piano). \nCREEKBED CARTER HOGAN\nFor trans folksinger Creekbed Carter Hogan\, everything good is made from the rotten stump of something else. It’s a theme they’ve become familiar with as they’ve made a life weaving stories of growing up religious around songs that pierce the soul\, tickle the funny bone\, and showcase a unique blend of self-taught folk picking and queer mayhem. \nCreekbed Carter\, out with Gar Hole Records on March 22 2024\, is Hogan at their most confident. Deftly crafted with folk sensibilities\, country swagger\, and a power emanating from the force of their own desires\, their new self-titled album is both creed and archive: a defiant declaration of survival and solidarity in an otherwise limited world.

CANCELLATIONS MADE WITHIN 30 DAYS WILL BE ISSUED A 50% REFUND. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC annestrutzfineart.com\nAnne Strutz is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. Anne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.
