DESCRIPTION:—This event is STILL ON despite the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. We hope that by continuing to provide this opportunity for some simple plant therapy and connection with each other\, this nature restoration-centered event may offer some reprieve from the daily realities so many of us have been experiencing.— \nJoin the Hemlock Restoration Initiative on Friday\, October 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as we lend a hand to our partners at the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA). Instead of chemically treating hemlock trees\, volunteers will be combating hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) by supporting the work of the FRA at their research facility in Waynesville\, where they are breeding HWA-resistant hemlock trees. \nVolunteers will complete tasks in FRA’s greenhouse and nursery to help with their selective breeding program. Volunteers will also get a tour of the facility by researcher Ben Smith and learn about their efforts to restore hemlocks. This is a great opportunity to help hemlocks without handling insecticide. \nPlease RSVP by emailing Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org by Tuesday\, October 22nd. Please include a contact phone number and email address when you sign up. These volunteer days fill up quickly\, so it’s a good idea to sign up soon to ensure your spot. \nMore information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering.

DESCRIPTION:TOUCH-A-TRUCK is an annual community-wide event where both kids and kids at heart have the opportunity to see\, touch\, and learn about vehicles of all types\, including public service\, emergency\, utility\, construction\, delivery\, and public transportation — all in one place! Guests will meet the drivers and operators of these vehicles. Children will be able to “Truck-or-Treat” during the festival\, and family-friendly costumes are encouraged (but not required). There will be a quiet hour from 11AM-noon for individuals sensitive to loud noises. Tickets are $5 per person ages 3 and up and can be purchased online or at the gate. DESCRIPTION:Friends\, it is time once again for Asheville’s most fantastical festival of freakiness and fun… The Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival! As always\, this is a FREE community event\, brought to you by Arts 2 People\, the organization that put on LAAFF for 15 years downtown.\nThis year’s festival will be bigger than ever with three music stages\, a community storytelling tent\, dozens of art vendors\, food\, beer and other libations\, and of course\, the highlight of the evening: the sunset performance by Surreal Sirkus.\nThe main stage at the Amphitheater in front of City Hall will feature live bands and musicians from Asheville and beyond. It will culminate in the Surreal Sirkus Main Show at 7:30 pm\, which will showcase an array of performers\, including aerialists\, fire spinners\, puppeteers\, jugglers\, dancers\, and other circus acts.\nThis year’s show tells the story of one man’s journey after death\, and the beings he encounters along the way. Unifire Theater\, Street Creature Puppets\, and many other local performance groups will take part in the show.\nAlso\, this year\, Arts 2 People has partnered with Create Fest\, a local organization bringing diverse communities together through the arts. They will host an Open Mic & Showcase on the Reuter Terrace\, from noon until 7 p.m. The terrace will also be home to a number of interactive exhibits and spaces for audience participation.\nMeanwhile\, at North Pack Square\, there will be two more performance areas: an EDM stage on the raised lawn featuring some of Asheville’s finest DJ’s\, and a Storytelling Tent located on the site of the former Vance Monument.\nThe latter is intended as a space for folks from around the region to share their personal stories as a way of bringing the community together in a spirit of healing and greater understanding of each other. It existed as both an annual event and a performance troupe of the same name from 1996 to 2005\, when it was a staple of the city’s underground arts scene. The organization’s biannual conferences are hosted in different North Carolina cities each year. The last time the conference took place in Asheville was 2019. This weekend event\, designed to deepen meaningful connections among attendees\, is a three-day celebration of North Carolina’s literary craft with talks\, workshops\, panels\, and resources. \nJoin over 200 other writers and literature enthusiasts!  \nThe conference welcomes attendees to experience two sides of literary craft: the evolving publishing environment for North Carolina writers\, as well as craft technique that makes good writing endure through the ages.
