SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Orchestra's "Finding Home"\, Saturday Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Ridge Orchestra introduces its 25th Anniversary Season with two performances of “Finding Home.” This series debuts new Music Director\, Dr. Emily Mariko Eng. \nThe Blue Ridge Orchestra had originally planned to perform “Finding Home” for the season opening in October. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene\, we have rescheduled our “Finding Home” performances to December\, in recognition of the heroic and tireless efforts of our region\, our state\, and our country\, to rally around rebuilding and restoring our beloved home of Asheville and Western North Carolina. \nPlease join the Blue Ridge Orchestra for this tribute\, in two 3:00 pm concerts: on Saturday\, December 7th in Charles Beall Auditorium of Haywood Community College; and on Sunday\, December 8th in Lipinsky Auditorium\, UNC Asheville. Finding Home elicits the many emotions that accompany life’s journey and explorations. Experiencing the magic of both urban and rural environments\, far away destinations\, and the familiarity of home\, this concert will include Quinn Mason’s Inner City Rhapsody\, Copland’s Letter from Home\, Gershwin’s American in Paris\, and Carlos Simon’s The Block! We are proud to feature renowned baritone Isaiah Feken on Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and of course we will include holiday favorites…In the wake of Hurricane Helene\, this program is all the more poignant\, bringing our community together with its inspiring music. \nThis is a pivotal year for the Blue Ridge Orchestra. Dr. Emily Mariko Eng is excited to begin her tenure as Music Director of the Blue Ridge Orchestra\, after guest conducting Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 in last season’s Spring Fourth concert. Prior to her role at UNC Asheville\, Emily earned a DMA in Conducting from the University of Georgia\, an MM in Conducting from New England Conservatory\, and a BS in Biochemistry and Music Composition from Brandeis University. \n “This concert program explores many meanings of home: finding community\, discovering a sense of self\, pioneering one’s artistic voice\, feeling at peace even in a faraway land. Following the devastation from Hurricane Helene\, we are looking forward to coming together as an orchestra and providing comfort through music.” \nThe Blue Ridge Orchestra has been making quality\, symphonic music accessible to audiences across WNC since 1999. Comprised of over fifty talented local musicians who volunteer their time to practice\, rehearse\, and perform\, the BRO has showcased its talents in Asheville\, Canton\, Swannanoa\, Black Mountain\, and Clyde. \nFinding Home is generously sponsored by Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty. \nDetails: Blue Ridge Orchestra’s Finding Home\nSaturday\, December 7th\, 2024\, 3:00 pm\nHaywood Community College\nCharles Beall Auditorium\n185 Freedlander Drive\nClyde\, NC. 28721 \nTickets:\nGeneral Admission: $25\nStudents (ages 5+): $15 \nSunday\, December 8th\, 2024\, 3:00 pm\nUNC Asheville\nLipinsky Auditorium\n300 Library Lane\nAsheville\, NC. 28804 \nTickets:\nGeneral Admission: $20\nFriends of the Orchestra: $15\nStudents: $5\nChildren 6 and under: Free \nInfo: https://blueridgeorchestra.org/finding-home-dec-24\, Facebook\, Instagram\, or call 828-782-3354.

SUMMARY:Robert Beatty Book-Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Join Robert Beatty\, the #1 best-selling author of the Serafina Series\, for a book-signing event\, 1-3 p.m. Sunday\, Dec. 8\, at Barnes & Noble-Asheville Mall. Rescheduled from October due to Hurricane Helene\, this free\, open house-style event is the first and only opportunity to meet Robert and get signed and personalized copies of his new book\, SYLVIA DOE AND THE 100-YEAR FLOOD. It’s also the perfect time to get a one-of-a-kind gift for all the readers on your holiday list and to support storm relief efforts here in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. \nRobert is donating all earned royalties from sales of Sylvia Doe to the Helene Rebuild Collaborative\, an Asheville-based grassroots initiative focused on providing immediate and direct relief to the people and communities hardest hit by the storm. Learn more about HRC: https://hurricanehelenewnc.com/ \nABOUT THE BOOK: Sylvia Doe doesn’t know where she was born or the people she came from. She doesn’t even know her real last name. Sylvia has lived at the Highground Home for Children in the mountains of North Carolina for as long as she can remember. Whenever the administrators place her with a foster family in the city\, she runs away\, back to her horse Kitty Hawk—her best friend—and the other horses in the herd\, the only place she feels like she belongs. When a hurricane causes the remote mountain valley where she lives to flood\, Sylvia must rescue her beloved horses. But she begins to encounter strange and wondrous things floating down the river. Glittering gemstones and wild animals that don’t belong — everything’s out of place. Then she spots an unconscious boy floating in the water. As she drags him onto the shore and their adventure together begins\, Sylvia wonders who he is and where he came from. And why does she feel such a strong connection to this mysterious boy? For readers ages 8 to 108. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert Beatty is the best-selling author of the Serafina Series\, the Willa Series\, and Sylvia Doe — all published by Disney-Hyperion. With over a million copies sold\, his books are loved by young readers and adults alike\, are a classroom favorite for teachers nationwide\, and have been translated into more than 20 languages across the world. The Serafina Series is a spooky mystery-thriller about a brave and unusual cat-like girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate\, surrounded by the opulence of the Gilded Age and the rugged beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Serafina and the Black Cloak\, the first book in the series\, won the Southern Book Prize in 2016. All four books in the series became #1 New York Times bestsellers. Beatty’s second project was the #1 New York Times best-selling Willa of the Wood Series\, the story of a young forest girl with ancient magical powers who struggles for survival and understanding in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Willa books are in the early stages of being developed into a live action television series by Lionsgate. Beatty lives in the mountains of Asheville\, N.C.\, with his wife and three daughters\, who help create and refine his stories. He writes full-time now\, but in past lives\, he was one of the early pioneers of cloud computing\, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems\, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics\, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine. In 2007\, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year.

SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Orchestra's "Finding Home"\, Sunday Performance
Originally from New Hampshire\, Emily serves on the music faculty at UNC Asheville\, where she is Director of Wind Bands.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday at Violet Hill Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative is hosting a Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday on Tuesday\, December 10th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Asheville\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nCome help us treat hemlocks in this beautiful area! This volunteer day will involve re-treating healthy hemlocks around the cemetery area on mostly flat terrain\, great for those interested in a less strenuous day. \nOn HRI chemical treatment workdays\, volunteers treat hemlocks with insecticide to protect them from hemlock woolly adelgid. Every volunteer will be paired with an experienced\, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance. For more questions and to register\, reach out to Ayla at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Hike at DuPont State Recreational Forest
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, December 12th at 1:00 pm for an educational hemlock hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative at DuPont State Recreational Forest near Cedar Mountain\, NC. The hike is about 3.5 miles total round-trip\, and is considered easy to moderate terrain. \nWe will walk along Pitch Pine Trail\, Three Lakes Trail\, and Conservation Road. Along the way\, we will traverse through one of our Hemlock Conservation Areas (HCAs). We will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks in riparian areas\, what is threatening them\, what is being done about it\, and more. \nThis HCA is very special\, as it is a site of active Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practice- it is managed using many different methods to protect our hemlocks from hemlock woolly adelgid. These methods include chemical\, biological\, and silvicultural controls. We will pass through active research plots and discuss the work that is being done to find the best way(s) to protect our hemlocks for years to come. \nPlease note that although the trail is open and clear\, some overhead hazards remain present. \nWe’ll meet at the DSRF visitors center. More information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering. \nFor any questions or to register\, contact Olivia Hall at education@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783. DESCRIPTION:Bill Viola’s Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier\, 1979 on loan from Art Bridges is an immersive experience that explores the ideas of death and regeneration in nature. SUMMARY:A Christmas Memory
DESCRIPTION:Flat Rock\, N.C. – Returning to the stage for his sixth straight season at St. John in the Wilderness\, actor and theologian E.R. Haire\, Jr. will perform Truman Capote’s beloved short story\, A Christmas Memory\, as a one-man show. \nThe dates for this year’s performances are Friday\, December 13 and Saturday\, December 14 at 7:30 pm and Sunday\, December 15 at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm. The shows will be held in the Wilderness Room of the Parish House at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock\, across Rutledge Drive from the Episcopal Church. \n“It is once again an honor to bring this classic story to life. I am grateful to the good people of St John in the Wilderness and the greater Flat Rock community and beyond who have supported my efforts as I will be entering my sixth year of performing this wonderful\, heartfelt story\,” said Dr. Haire. \nThe show is free to the public but seating is limited to 60 people per performance and RSVP is required. The direct link is http://bit.ly/christmasmemory24 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org. Face masks are optional. \nA Christmas Memory takes place during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Until he was ten years old\, Truman Capote lived with elderly relatives in a small town in rural Alabama. The story is an autobiographical account of those years\, especially of his relationship with one of the elderly cousins\, Miss Sook Faulk. \nThe greatest examples of Capote’s skillfulness as a writer are found among the stories inspired by his early childhood and the relationships he forged growing up in the rural South. \nA Christmas Memory first appeared in Mademoiselle Magazine in the late 1950s\, when Capote was 27 years old\, and has since become one of his most beloved and bestselling works. \nMr. Capote was a flamboyant figure in both literary and cultural circles. Controversial\, colorful and complex\, he was a writer of uncommon grace. His best-known works include Breakfast at Tiffany’s\, In Cold Blood\, Other Voices Other Rooms\, and The Grass Harp. Mr. Capote died in 1984 at the age of 59. \nEarle Ross (E.R.) Haire\, Jr. PhD is a native of North Carolina. His professional achievements combine acting and theology. In Los Angeles\, he worked as an actor and at Paramount Studios. Theater credits in Los Angeles include The Foreigner\, You Can’t Take It With You\, Hamlet\, Henry V\, Richard III\, The Importance of Being Earnest\, The Caucasian Chalk Circle\, and the comedy spoof Riffs of Shakespeare. Dr. Haire is also a member of the Screen Actors Guild. \nDr. Haire received a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale University\, studying at both the Yale Divinity School and the Yale School of Drama. He earned his PhD in Theology and Ethics with a concentration in religion\, media and culture at the University of Edinburgh in 2017. \nSt. John in the Wilderness is located in Flat Rock\, NC at 1895 Greenville Highway.
