SUMMARY:All Is Calm
DESCRIPTION:The Western Front\, Christmas\, 1914. Out of the violence a silence\, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus begins an extraordinary time of camaraderie\, music\, and peace. A remarkable true story\, told in the words and songs of the men who lived it. \n“A beautiful musical retelling of a World War I ceasefire\nwith gifts of music\, poetry\, and melody.”\n-New York Times \nShowtimes are 7:30pm for evening performances and 2pm for matinees. Please see our website for available showtimes and tickets\, which are being offered on a sliding scale so that everyone can enjoy theatre in the aftermath of Helene. If you cannot afford the lowest tier\, please reach out to our box office and we will work with you.

SUMMARY:Historic Johnson Farm Christmas Tours
DESCRIPTION:On weekdays from December 2 through 20\, Historic Johnson Farm will host daytime Christmas tours. Tour the decorated historic house\, visit the Heritage Weavers & Fiber Artists\, and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. Guided tours are at 10:30 AM each day. While drop-ins are allowed\, those with reservations take priority\, so please consider making a reservation. Guided daytime tours are $15 for adults\, $10 for students and seniors (65 and over)\, and free for those 4 and under. \nGroups of 10 or more are welcome to reserve private group tours at 1:30 PM each weekday for a group rate of $8 per person\, but they must reserve ahead of time by calling 828-891-6585 or emailing jfarm@hcpsnc.org. \nIf you are looking for a holiday gift or a stocking stuffer\, purchase a farm item. Mugs\, ornaments\, and magnets with the farm logo will be for sale along with stickers with the farm’s animals. The popular children’s book about the farm\, Winston the Farm Dog: A History of Historic Johnson Farm\, will be for sale as well. The Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists gift shop will be stocked full of handmade fiber gifts. \nThe farmhouse was built by hand from 1876-1880. It is believed to be the oldest standing brick home in Henderson County. The Christmas season was a special time for Johnson family members\, who were known for their generosity. Their home was among the first in our county to get electricity. For many Christmas seasons\, they placed their tree decorated with colorful lights on the front porch. Travelers enjoyed the glow of the display to and from town in the evenings. Throughout the year and especially at holidays\, Sallie Johnson was known for her delicious cakes. The farm grounds were plush with greenery that was gathered to decorate their home. The celebration of Christmas was much simpler then. \nThe Christmas tours are important for the non-profit foundation that operates a heritage education center as part of Henderson County Public Schools. Events like this provide a significant portion of the farm’s operating expenses and educational experiences. \nThe farm was a gift to the schoolchildren and the community by the late Vernon and Leander Johnson. It is owned by Henderson County Public Schools\, and is managed by an Executive Director and the Historic Johnson Farm Foundation\, Inc. It was designated a NC Cultural Treasure. The farm is located at 3346 Haywood Road in Hendersonville\, NC 28739. \nFor more information\, call the farm foundation office at 828-891-6585. SUMMARY:Asheville Nativity Exhibition “Oh Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas Crèches from Around the World”
DESCRIPTION:“Oh Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas Crèches from Around the World”\nFirst Baptist Church of Asheville\, 5 Oak St\, downtown Asheville\nFree Admission\nOver 250 Nativity sets from more than seventy countries will be on display\nDecember 6-15\, 2024\nWeekdays: 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\nSaturdays: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.\nSundays: 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nThe Asheville Nativity exhibit entitled “Oh Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas Crèches from Around the World” returns to First Baptist Church of Asheville December 6-15\, 2024.\nThe eighth annual Asheville Nativity exhibit is a gift to the community coordinated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and First Baptist Church of Asheville. Nativity displays may be viewed in the dining room at First Baptist Church of Asheville beginning Friday\, December 6 through Sunday\, December 15. The exhibit will be open to the public weekdays 5-8PM\, Saturdays 10AM-8PM\, and Sundays 12PM-8PM. School groups\, retirement communities\, or special press visits can be arranged by emailing ashevillenativity@gmail.com. The complete schedule can be found at www.ashevillenativity.org. Over 250 Nativity scenes from around the world will be on display. This family-friendly event includes a life-size stable with costumes.\nA crèche\, often called a Nativity scene\, is an artistic representation of the birth of Jesus Christ. While focusing on the central figures of the mother Mary and Christ Child\, crèche artists often telescope time and place to bring together a host of earthly and heavenly participants—shepherds\, animals\, wise men\, angels\, and commoners.\nFor centuries\, the crèche as an art form has flourished in homes and churches worldwide. Whether the crèche depicts 19th-century Italian villagers dressed in silks and jewels or contemporary African animal herders crafted from clay\, each representation reflects the unique talents\, circumstances and culture of the artist.\nThis exhibit is an ecumenical effort to highlight the cultural diversity of each crèche on display\, while honoring and celebrating the common theme that runs throughout—the birth of Jesus.\nPast events have included participation from seven different Asheville area churches and displayed over 250 unique Nativity sets from seventy countries around the world. Thousands of people attend the exhibit each year. Guest comments included: “Awesome!” “Wonderful!” “Lovely!” “Words cannot express the beauty.” “Impressive and beautifully done.”\nThe event is free to the public. Donations are welcome. Tax-deductible donations can be made by visiting ashevillenativity.org. More information is available on the website or by emailing ashevillenativity@gmail.com. First Baptist Church of Asheville is located at 5 Oak Street in downtown Asheville.

SUMMARY:For the Record: Jeremy Phillips art opening
DESCRIPTION:“For the Record\,” a new exhibition by Jeremy Phillips opens at Citizen Vinyl on Friday\, December 6\, 6-9 p.m. Jupiter\, experimental music from Jeff Arnal\, Kris Gruda\, and John English\, will also perform in celebration of their new\, eponymous album. \nJeremy Phillips is an Asheville based artist and educator. He paints out of his River Arts District studio in Pink Dog Creative and is a Religion and Humanities Instructor at Haywood Community College. \nFrom Jeremy: “I love vinyl records and all the accoutrements around them; the 12 inch square\, the 12 inch circle\, the cardboard covers with endless color and imagery\, the spines with their tiny words\, the familiarity of holding them and setting down the needle on the turntable\, the liner notes and inner sheets with lyrics and more\, the way the lined-up spines look on the shelf\, the sepia inner sleeves of older records\, the lovely aging and accidents that give the covers character and wear. Oh and the rich sound and occasional crackles are just fine too. \n“This show takes scrap records that no record store can sell\, or that end up in the Goodwill bins\, or that were jettisoned for refuse from Helene floods and turns them into new images and uses. This is work that celebrates the physical properties of the records and their covers\, turning them into fresh mediums for collage\, sculptural pieces\, realist imagery\, and abstraction.”

SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Orchestra's "Finding Home"\, Saturday Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Ridge Orchestra introduces its 25th Anniversary Season with two performances of “Finding Home.” This series debuts new Music Director\, Dr. Emily Mariko Eng. \nThe Blue Ridge Orchestra had originally planned to perform “Finding Home” for the season opening in October. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene\, we have rescheduled our “Finding Home” performances to December\, in recognition of the heroic and tireless efforts of our region\, our state\, and our country\, to rally around rebuilding and restoring our beloved home of Asheville and Western North Carolina. \nPlease join the Blue Ridge Orchestra for this tribute\, in two 3:00 pm concerts: on Saturday\, December 7th in Charles Beall Auditorium of Haywood Community College; and on Sunday\, December 8th in Lipinsky Auditorium\, UNC Asheville. Finding Home elicits the many emotions that accompany life’s journey and explorations. Experiencing the magic of both urban and rural environments\, far away destinations\, and the familiarity of home\, this concert will include Quinn Mason’s Inner City Rhapsody\, Copland’s Letter from Home\, Gershwin’s American in Paris\, and Carlos Simon’s The Block! We are proud to feature renowned baritone Isaiah Feken on Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and of course we will include holiday favorites…In the wake of Hurricane Helene\, this program is all the more poignant\, bringing our community together with its inspiring music. \nThis is a pivotal year for the Blue Ridge Orchestra. Dr. Emily Mariko Eng is excited to begin her tenure as Music Director of the Blue Ridge Orchestra\, after guest conducting Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 in last season’s Spring Fourth concert. Originally from New Hampshire\, Emily serves on the music faculty at UNC Asheville\, where she is Director of Wind Bands. Prior to her role at UNC Asheville\, Emily earned a DMA in Conducting from the University of Georgia\, an MM in Conducting from New England Conservatory\, and a BS in Biochemistry and Music Composition from Brandeis University. \n “This concert program explores many meanings of home: finding community\, discovering a sense of self\, pioneering one’s artistic voice\, feeling at peace even in a faraway land. Following the devastation from Hurricane Helene\, we are looking forward to coming together as an orchestra and providing comfort through music.” \nThe Blue Ridge Orchestra has been making quality\, symphonic music accessible to audiences across WNC since 1999. Comprised of over fifty talented local musicians who volunteer their time to practice\, rehearse\, and perform\, the BRO has showcased its talents in Asheville\, Canton\, Swannanoa\, Black Mountain\, and Clyde. \nFinding Home is generously sponsored by Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty. \nDetails: Blue Ridge Orchestra’s Finding Home\nSaturday\, December 7th\, 2024\, 3:00 pm\nHaywood Community College\nCharles Beall Auditorium\n185 Freedlander Drive\nClyde\, NC. 28721 \nTickets:\nGeneral Admission: $25\nStudents (ages 5+): $15 \nSunday\, December 8th\, 2024\, 3:00 pm\nUNC Asheville\nLipinsky Auditorium\n300 Library Lane\nAsheville\, NC. 28804 \nTickets:\nGeneral Admission: $20\nFriends of the Orchestra: $15\nStudents: $5\nChildren 6 and under: Free \nInfo: https://blueridgeorchestra.org/finding-home-dec-24\, Facebook\, Instagram\, or call 828-782-3354.
