SUMMARY:Asheville Nativity Exhibition “Oh Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas Crèches from Around the World”
DESCRIPTION:“Oh Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas Crèches from Around the World”\nFirst Baptist Church of Asheville\, 5 Oak St\, downtown Asheville\nFree Admission\nOver 250 Nativity sets from more than seventy countries will be on display\nDecember 6-15\, 2024\nWeekdays: 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\nSaturdays: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.\nSundays: 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. \nThe Asheville Nativity exhibit entitled “Oh Tidings of Comfort and Joy: Christmas Crèches from Around the World” returns to First Baptist Church of Asheville December 6-15\, 2024.\nThe eighth annual Asheville Nativity exhibit is a gift to the community coordinated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and First Baptist Church of Asheville. Nativity displays may be viewed in the dining room at First Baptist Church of Asheville beginning Friday\, December 6 through Sunday\, December 15. The exhibit will be open to the public weekdays 5-8PM\, Saturdays 10AM-8PM\, and Sundays 12PM-8PM. School groups\, retirement communities\, or special press visits can be arranged by emailing ashevillenativity@gmail.com. The complete schedule can be found at www.ashevillenativity.org. Over 250 Nativity scenes from around the world will be on display. This family-friendly event includes a life-size stable with costumes.\nA crèche\, often called a Nativity scene\, is an artistic representation of the birth of Jesus Christ. While focusing on the central figures of the mother Mary and Christ Child\, crèche artists often telescope time and place to bring together a host of earthly and heavenly participants—shepherds\, animals\, wise men\, angels\, and commoners.\nFor centuries\, the crèche as an art form has flourished in homes and churches worldwide. Whether the crèche depicts 19th-century Italian villagers dressed in silks and jewels or contemporary African animal herders crafted from clay\, each representation reflects the unique talents\, circumstances and culture of the artist.\nThis exhibit is an ecumenical effort to highlight the cultural diversity of each crèche on display\, while honoring and celebrating the common theme that runs throughout—the birth of Jesus.\nPast events have included participation from seven different Asheville area churches and displayed over 250 unique Nativity sets from seventy countries around the world. Thousands of people attend the exhibit each year. Guest comments included: “Awesome!” “Wonderful!” “Lovely!” “Words cannot express the beauty.” “Impressive and beautifully done.”\nThe event is free to the public. Donations are welcome. Tax-deductible donations can be made by visiting ashevillenativity.org. More information is available on the website or by emailing ashevillenativity@gmail.com. First Baptist Church of Asheville is located at 5 Oak Street in downtown Asheville.

SUMMARY:For the Record: Jeremy Phillips art opening
DESCRIPTION:“For the Record\,” a new exhibition by Jeremy Phillips opens at Citizen Vinyl on Friday\, December 6\, 6-9 p.m. Jupiter\, experimental music from Jeff Arnal\, Kris Gruda\, and John English\, will also perform in celebration of their new\, eponymous album. \nJeremy Phillips is an Asheville based artist and educator. He paints out of his River Arts District studio in Pink Dog Creative and is a Religion and Humanities Instructor at Haywood Community College. \nFrom Jeremy: “I love vinyl records and all the accoutrements around them; the 12 inch square\, the 12 inch circle\, the cardboard covers with endless color and imagery\, the spines with their tiny words\, the familiarity of holding them and setting down the needle on the turntable\, the liner notes and inner sheets with lyrics and more\, the way the lined-up spines look on the shelf\, the sepia inner sleeves of older records\, the lovely aging and accidents that give the covers character and wear. Oh and the rich sound and occasional crackles are just fine too. \n“This show takes scrap records that no record store can sell\, or that end up in the Goodwill bins\, or that were jettisoned for refuse from Helene floods and turns them into new images and uses. This is work that celebrates the physical properties of the records and their covers\, turning them into fresh mediums for collage\, sculptural pieces\, realist imagery\, and abstraction.”

SUMMARY:Robert Beatty Book-Signing Event
DESCRIPTION:Join Robert Beatty\, the #1 best-selling author of the Serafina Series\, for a book-signing event\, 1-3 p.m. Sunday\, Dec. 8\, at Barnes & Noble-Asheville Mall. Rescheduled from October due to Hurricane Helene\, this free\, open house-style event is the first and only opportunity to meet Robert and get signed and personalized copies of his new book\, SYLVIA DOE AND THE 100-YEAR FLOOD. It’s also the perfect time to get a one-of-a-kind gift for all the readers on your holiday list and to support storm relief efforts here in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. \nRobert is donating all earned royalties from sales of Sylvia Doe to the Helene Rebuild Collaborative\, an Asheville-based grassroots initiative focused on providing immediate and direct relief to the people and communities hardest hit by the storm. Learn more about HRC: https://hurricanehelenewnc.com/ \nABOUT THE BOOK: Sylvia Doe doesn’t know where she was born or the people she came from. She doesn’t even know her real last name. Sylvia has lived at the Highground Home for Children in the mountains of North Carolina for as long as she can remember. Whenever the administrators place her with a foster family in the city\, she runs away\, back to her horse Kitty Hawk—her best friend—and the other horses in the herd\, the only place she feels like she belongs. When a hurricane causes the remote mountain valley where she lives to flood\, Sylvia must rescue her beloved horses. But she begins to encounter strange and wondrous things floating down the river. Glittering gemstones and wild animals that don’t belong — everything’s out of place. Then she spots an unconscious boy floating in the water. As she drags him onto the shore and their adventure together begins\, Sylvia wonders who he is and where he came from. And why does she feel such a strong connection to this mysterious boy? For readers ages 8 to 108. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert Beatty is the best-selling author of the Serafina Series\, the Willa Series\, and Sylvia Doe — all published by Disney-Hyperion. With over a million copies sold\, his books are loved by young readers and adults alike\, are a classroom favorite for teachers nationwide\, and have been translated into more than 20 languages across the world. The Serafina Series is a spooky mystery-thriller about a brave and unusual cat-like girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate\, surrounded by the opulence of the Gilded Age and the rugged beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Serafina and the Black Cloak\, the first book in the series\, won the Southern Book Prize in 2016. All four books in the series became #1 New York Times bestsellers. Beatty’s second project was the #1 New York Times best-selling Willa of the Wood Series\, the story of a young forest girl with ancient magical powers who struggles for survival and understanding in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Willa books are in the early stages of being developed into a live action television series by Lionsgate. Beatty lives in the mountains of Asheville\, N.C.\, with his wife and three daughters\, who help create and refine his stories. He writes full-time now\, but in past lives\, he was one of the early pioneers of cloud computing\, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems\, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics\, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine. In 2007\, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year.

SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday at Violet Hill Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative is hosting a Hemlock Treatment Volunteer Workday on Tuesday\, December 10th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Asheville\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. This volunteer day will involve re-treating healthy hemlocks around the cemetery area on mostly flat terrain\, great for those interested in a less strenuous day. \nOn HRI chemical treatment workdays\, volunteers treat hemlocks with insecticide to protect them from hemlock woolly adelgid. Every volunteer will be paired with an experienced\, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance. For more questions and to register\, reach out to Ayla at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org.

SUMMARY:Innerdance: Altered States of Consciousness with Soundscapes & Energy Work
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a healing journey into altered states of consciousness as we flow through brain wave states with soundscapes & energy work! \nThe Innerdance is a music-based\, meditative\, healing journey. It involves the use of special soundscapes that mimic circadian rhythms and enable people to move effortlessly between different brain wave states. As a result\, people experience an expanded sense of awareness and altered states of consciousness that support conditions for self-healing\, as old paradigms change and new ways of being emerge. \nIn this space of unlimited possibilities\, very profound and mystical things can happen. Common ‘movements’ in the Innerdance include drug-free psychedelic experiences\, past life regressions\, lucid dream-like states\, near-death experiences\, kundalini activations\, synesthesia\, non-dual awareness\, and womb/birth memories. \nBenefits may include nervous system regulation\, circadian rhythm reset\, mental clarity\, inner peace\, greater neural plasticity\, increased intuitive discernment\, emotional regulation\, improved self-esteem\, deep insight\, and enhanced sensory perception. \nLearn More on my YouTube Channel: @linda.innerdance \nMy Innerdance Experience \n \nUnexpected Things That Can Happen In The Innerdance \n \nThe Innerdance Soundscapes vs Sound Baths \n \nINVESTMENT $45\n(Advance Tickets available for purchase from The Horse Shoe Farm only) \nTo register\, please visit https://thehorseshoefarm.com/upcoming-events \nTo purchase advance tickets\, please call 828.393.3034 \nDATES: \nWednesdays 6:00pm – 7:30pm \nSeptember 4\, 18\nOctober 2\, 16\, 30\nNovember 13\, 27\nDecember 11 \nEvent will take place at The Horse Shoe Farm in The Sanctuary. SUMMARY:Hemlock Hike at DuPont State Recreational Forest
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, December 12th at 1:00 pm for an educational hemlock hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative at DuPont State Recreational Forest near Cedar Mountain\, NC. The hike is about 3.5 miles total round-trip\, and is considered easy to moderate terrain. \nWe will walk along Pitch Pine Trail\, Three Lakes Trail\, and Conservation Road. Along the way\, we will traverse through one of our Hemlock Conservation Areas (HCAs). We will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks in riparian areas\, what is threatening them\, what is being done about it\, and more. \nThis HCA is very special\, as it is a site of active Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practice- it is managed using many different methods to protect our hemlocks from hemlock woolly adelgid. These methods include chemical\, biological\, and silvicultural controls. We will pass through active research plots and discuss the work that is being done to find the best way(s) to protect our hemlocks for years to come. \nPlease note that although the trail is open and clear\, some overhead hazards remain present. \nWe’ll meet at the DSRF visitors center. More information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering. \nFor any questions or to register\, contact Olivia Hall at education@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783. While the hike is free to attend\, your RSVP is required. Please sign up by Wednesday\, December 11th. Please include contact phone number\, email address\, and emergency contact when you sign up. The backup date for this hike in case of inclement weather will be Thursday\, December 19th.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier\, 1979
DESCRIPTION:Bill Viola’s Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier\, 1979 on loan from Art Bridges is an immersive experience that explores the ideas of death and regeneration in nature. In a darkened room\, sounds from nature envelop the viewer\, as a placid pool of water reflects a projected image of Mount Rainier onto a screen. The water is periodically disturbed\, causing the image to dissolve and slowly recompose as the pool settles. \nImage: Bill Viola\, “Moving Stillness: Mount Rainier 1979” (1979)\, Video/sound installation.
