SUMMARY:The Wondrous World Of Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Holden Gallery’s exhibition The Wondrous World Of Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets featuring the work of master puppeteer Hobey Ford will be on view at Warren Wilson College from January 23rd to March 7th\, 2025.  \nWarren Wilson’s Art Department is excited to host an exhibition of rod\, foam\, and shadow puppets by the award winning puppeteer\, Hobey Ford. On display will be characters\, stories and set pieces from a range of tales from Ford’s previous shows including a few puppets from friend and mentor Clyde Hollifield. This exhibition will explore how puppetry can engage the imagination of audiences of all ages\, while sharing the process of puppet construction and showcasing Ford’s contributions to the craft.  \nWinner of the UNIMA Citation for Excellence and 3 Jim Henson Foundation grants\, Hobey Ford is known for his excellence in puppetry performance and craft and his skill as a master storyteller. Hobey utilizes his artistic studies from the State University of New York and UNCA to design and construct all of his Golden Rod puppets. His performances present puppetry styles and tales from around the world and feature puppetry styles he has created such as the Peepers hand puppets and his well-loved “Foamies” puppets made from large blocks of foam with inventive mechanisms to create life-like movements. Hobey tours internationally and trains teachers through his involvement with the Kennedy Center of the Northwest Film Forum.  \nThe exhibition opening reception is on January 23rd  from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.  The Elizabeth Holden Gallery is open M-F\, 10- 4pm and Saturdays 1-4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center presents the Yarn/Wire quartet\, performing compositions by Annea Lockwood and Katherine Young. \nThe Yarn/Wire ensemble will perform the second realization of their Fromm Foundation-supported project in collaboration with composer Katherine Young\, entitled BIOMES 6.1. They will also perform the music of Annea Lockwood\, a legendary composer\, sound artist\, and acoustic ecologist and member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, who is renowned for her focus on the effects of sound in our environments. \n——–\nDescribed by The New York Times as “key figures from the contemporary music scene… with unmistakable devotion and excitement\,” Yarn/Wire is a New York-based percussion and piano quartet (Sae Hashimoto and Russell Greenberg\, percussion; Laura Barger and Julia Den Boer\, pianos) dedicated to the promotion of creative\, experimental new music. \nSince its formation in 2005\, the ensemble has become a fixture at the world’s preeminent halls and music festivals\, making its German debut in two concerts at the prestigious Donaueschingen Musiktage in 2023. Yarn/Wire’s 2023-24 season includes a residency at IRCAM; performances at the Eclat Festival and Monday Evening Concerts; an appearance at the Bergen International Festival with JACK Quartet; Øyvind Torvund’s The Sound of the Forest at the Ultima Festival in Norway; as well as several high profile NYC performances. Yarn/Wire holds educational and performance residencies this season at Emory University\, Georgia Tech\, and UC Berkeley. \nTheir ongoing commissioning series\, Yarn/Wire/Currents\, serves as an incubator for new experimental music in partnership with a variety of Brooklyn-based institutions. DESCRIPTION:Join us in this new monthly webinar series focused on recovery\, re-thinking\, and rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.  On Wednesday\, January 29th\, we will hear from Dr. Jamie Shinn of SUNY ESF who has been exploring and supporting responses to a significant flood disaster that took place in West Virginia in 2016.  This region shares features similar to our own\, and Jamie will share important insights and lessons that can help us rethink recovery and rebuilding in Western North Carolina with an emphasis on community resilience.  Chris Joyell\, Director of the Healthy Communities program and the Appalachian Design Center with MountainTrue\, will provide an overview of their wide-ranging efforts to engage local communities (including Swannanoa) in recovery\, resilience\, and rebuilding through a coordinated planning and engagement process.  This promises to be an illuminating conversation\, and we invite you to join us.

DESCRIPTION:Two of today’s best guitarists/singer-songwriters join forces for a night of music in Asheville! \nChristie Lenée is an award-winning singer\, songwriter\, and fingerstyle guitarist known for her unique style that blends folk-pop\, jazz\, blues\, and classical music.  A Tampa native and North Carolina resident\, Lenée took First Place at the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 2017\, was voted Acoustic Guitarist of the Year by England’s MusicRadar in 2019\, and was named Named “Best Acoustic Guitarists in the World Right Now” by Guitar World in 2020 \nCrys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality.” She was one of ten finalists (from a pool of 5\,000) in the NewSong Music Competition and\, after performing at Lincoln Center\, was named grand-prize winner. Matthews also won the People Music Network Social Justice Songs contest at the 2017 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Every Friday Modelface Comedy brings you the best comedians from all over the country. This week we have local favorite Aaron Naylor! \nAaron Naylor is a Chicago-based comedian from Kansas City. In 2013\, he performed at his first open mic at Laff’s Comedy Caffe after moving to Tucson\, AZ for some reason. \nShortly after\, he moved back to Kansas City and won the 2014 Local Comic Standing competition. He quickly became a Midwest favorite\, placing 2nd in the 2016 Cleveland Comedy Festival\, winning the 2017 Funniest Person in Wichita\, and was featured on season 8 of Comcast’s Trial by Laughter. \nAaron has performed at some of the best comedy festivals in the country\, including San Francisco Sketchfest\, Limestone\, Asheville\, and 10\,000 Laughs. He has also shared the stage with comedians like Todd Barry\, Sam Tallent\, and Ron Funches. His comedy has been featured on Comcast\, Comedy Juice\, and the whole entire internet. \nIn 2021\, Aaron was named the Funniest Person in Kansas City by KC Magazine\, while also co-founding the Fountain City Comedy Festival. In 2023\, he released a book called “Things I Wrote” to acclaim\, he thinks\, and shot his first comedy special “Born Illiterate” with Four by Three Productions.
