His books have received numerous awards\, including the Thomas Wolfe Literary Award\, the James Still Award for Writing About the Appalachian South\, the Willie Morris Prize for Southern Fiction\, and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction. Roberts is a Western North Carolina native\, as well as a lifelong teacher and educational reformer. He directs the National Paideia Center and lives in Asheville with his wife\, Lynn. \nDenise Kiernan is an author\, journalist\, producer\, and host of “CRAFT: Authors in Conversation.” Her young reader’s book\, We Gather Together: Stories of Thanksgiving from then to now\, arrived September 2023\, and is a companion title to the popular adult nonfiction book\, We Gather Together\, and children’s picture book\, Giving Thanks. Her book The Last Castle was an instant New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. SUMMARY:The Wondrous World Of Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Holden Gallery’s exhibition The Wondrous World Of Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets featuring the work of master puppeteer Hobey Ford will be on view at Warren Wilson College from January 23rd to March 7th\, 2025.  \nWarren Wilson’s Art Department is excited to host an exhibition of rod\, foam\, and shadow puppets by the award winning puppeteer\, Hobey Ford. On display will be characters\, stories and set pieces from a range of tales from Ford’s previous shows including a few puppets from friend and mentor Clyde Hollifield. This exhibition will explore how puppetry can engage the imagination of audiences of all ages\, while sharing the process of puppet construction and showcasing Ford’s contributions to the craft.  \nWinner of the UNIMA Citation for Excellence and 3 Jim Henson Foundation grants\, Hobey Ford is known for his excellence in puppetry performance and craft and his skill as a master storyteller. Hobey utilizes his artistic studies from the State University of New York and UNCA to design and construct all of his Golden Rod puppets. His performances present puppetry styles and tales from around the world and feature puppetry styles he has created such as the Peepers hand puppets and his well-loved “Foamies” puppets made from large blocks of foam with inventive mechanisms to create life-like movements. Hobey tours internationally and trains teachers through his involvement with the Kennedy Center of the Northwest Film Forum.  \nThe exhibition opening reception is on January 23rd  from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.  The Elizabeth Holden Gallery is open M-F\, 10- 4pm and Saturdays 1-4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center presents the Yarn/Wire quartet\, performing compositions by Annea Lockwood and Katherine Young. \nThe Yarn/Wire ensemble will perform the second realization of their Fromm Foundation-supported project in collaboration with composer Katherine Young\, entitled BIOMES 6.1. They will also perform the music of Annea Lockwood\, a legendary composer\, sound artist\, and acoustic ecologist and member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, who is renowned for her focus on the effects of sound in our environments. \n——–\nDescribed by The New York Times as “key figures from the contemporary music scene… with unmistakable devotion and excitement\,” Yarn/Wire is a New York-based percussion and piano quartet (Sae Hashimoto and Russell Greenberg\, percussion; Laura Barger and Julia Den Boer\, pianos) dedicated to the promotion of creative\, experimental new music. \nSince its formation in 2005\, the ensemble has become a fixture at the world’s preeminent halls and music festivals\, making its German debut in two concerts at the prestigious Donaueschingen Musiktage in 2023. Yarn/Wire’s 2023-24 season includes a residency at IRCAM; performances at the Eclat Festival and Monday Evening Concerts; an appearance at the Bergen International Festival with JACK Quartet; Øyvind Torvund’s The Sound of the Forest at the Ultima Festival in Norway; as well as several high profile NYC performances. Yarn/Wire holds educational and performance residencies this season at Emory University\, Georgia Tech\, and UC Berkeley. \nTheir ongoing commissioning series\, Yarn/Wire/Currents\, serves as an incubator for new experimental music in partnership with a variety of Brooklyn-based institutions. In 2013\, he performed at his first open mic at Laff’s Comedy Caffe after moving to Tucson\, AZ for some reason. \nShortly after\, he moved back to Kansas City and won the 2014 Local Comic Standing competition. He quickly became a Midwest favorite\, placing 2nd in the 2016 Cleveland Comedy Festival\, winning the 2017 Funniest Person in Wichita\, and was featured on season 8 of Comcast’s Trial by Laughter. \nAaron has performed at some of the best comedy festivals in the country\, including San Francisco Sketchfest\, Limestone\, Asheville\, and 10\,000 Laughs. He has also shared the stage with comedians like Todd Barry\, Sam Tallent\, and Ron Funches. His comedy has been featured on Comcast\, Comedy Juice\, and the whole entire internet. \nIn 2021\, Aaron was named the Funniest Person in Kansas City by KC Magazine\, while also co-founding the Fountain City Comedy Festival. DESCRIPTION:The Art League is proud to present “The Art of Fiber and Textiles\,” an exhibition that showcases the innovative spirit and enduring traditions of these versatile mediums. The Art League has invited artists from Local Cloth to participate in this special exhibit giving our community an opportunity to view a wide variety of material and design. The Art League was fortunate to escape significant damage from Hurricane Helene\, but Local Cloth was almost completely destroyed by flood waters and debris\, which knocked out their front door and windows and rose inside the walls to more than 10 feet. \n    The exhibit will run from February 1\, 2025 to February 21\, 2025 at The Art Place gallery\, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of ancient traditions and contemporary artistry.  An opening reception will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet the artists on February 1\, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. \n    The exhibition aims to highlight works rooted in traditional fiber materials\, structures\, processes\, and history\, while also celebrating pieces that push the boundaries of fiber art by exploring unexpected relationships with other creative disciplines. Music presents a Cabin Fever Concert Series with fun music\, lots of drums and shakers to play along\, poems\, a dance party\, and more! Sunday\, February 2. Event: 2-5pm. Concert: 3-4pm.
