SUMMARY:Hemlock Treatment Demonstration at the North Carolina Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:The Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is hosting a demonstration of chemical treatment methods to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on Friday\, March 14th from 1pm to 4pm at the NC Arboretum\, located at 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way\, Asheville\, NC. \nHemlock trees in western North Carolina are an important and irreplaceable component of our forests. These trees have been suffering for over two decades from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive insect that can kill the tree in as little as four years. \nHowever\, hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before. This hands-off demonstration will be useful for landowners\, natural resource managers and tree care professionals. We will use the trees on-site to practice assessing hemlock health to determine the best treatment options\, and HRI staff will demonstrate the HWA chemical treatment methods used on national forest and state lands. These methods are available to all private landowners in North Carolina without obtaining a license or certification. We will also discuss applicator and environmental safety\, special considerations and guidance for hiring a tree care professional. \nThe program is free to the North Carolina Arboretum members\, but nonmembers will need to pay a $20 entrance fee. Registration is required by Wednesday March 13th. Visit our website for information on how to register. Email education@savehemlocksnc.org or call 828-252-4783 with questions about the event.

SUMMARY:FASHION / PUPPET SHOW: How do we disappear yet still be seen?
DESCRIPTION:The Swannatopia Experimental Art Club will host a FASHION / PUPPET show on Friday\, March 14th at BMCM+AC\, featuring an improvised live scored orchestra\, “river runway\,” and a lineup of wearables exploring the theme: “How can we disappear but still be seen?” \nThis closing party will celebrate the exhibition DEER FREAKS…and decoys\, located downstairs at BMCM+AC. DEER FREAKS…and decoys is a multi-media\, multi-layered project of Swannatopia responding to The Farm at Black Mountain College exhibition. The installation at BMCM+AC explores the hyper-natural forces of attraction and repulsion informing our interactions with the landscapes we inhabit. From fence rows to scare-crows\, DEER FREAKS documents the creative ways people propagate\, shape\, lure\, and protect in their environments. \nBring binoculars and sunglasses to participate in “birding” during the show. Wear your finest deer / duck / turkey / moth / forest outfits and accessories. Want to join the runway and become part of this fashion experiment? Reach out to Swannatopia at swannatopia [@] gmail\, or via their Instagram.

SUMMARY:New Belgium Asheville Marathon and Half
DESCRIPTION:The New Belgium Asheville Marathon & Half is back this year with a new perspective\, renewed purpose\, and a story that’s unlike any other. In September\, Hurricane Helene brought devastation to our beloved city in ways we never imagined. For a moment\, we weren’t sure this event could happen. Then\, city officials reached out with a simple yet powerful message: We need running back. And they were right. \nThis year\, the New Belgium Asheville Marathon & Half isn’t just about crossing the finish line; it’s about uniting as locals and visitors to rally around a city that refuses to stay down. The landscape may look a little different\, but the spirit of Asheville shines brighter than ever. Together\, we’ll run through the scars of the storm\, celebrate our vibrant community\, and remind the world what it means to rise stronger in the face of adversity. \nThis is more than a race. This is Asheville’s comeback story. We hope you’ll join us in writing the next chapter.

SUMMARY:Historic Church Tours
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Flat Rock History \nTours of St. John in the Wilderness \nFLAT ROCK\, N.C. Tours of the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will resume on March 15. \nThe guided tours of the church and churchyard (cemetery) are led by church docents. “One of the joys of attending a beautiful holy place like St. John in the Wilderness is sharing it with our visitors. Our history is intertwined not just with the history of Flat Rock\, but with that of coastal South Carolina\, the home of our founders and earliest congregants\,” said Polly Morrice\, one of the docents leading the tours. \nHeld on the third Saturdays of the month from March through December\, tours start inside the Carriage Door entrance of the Church promptly at 11 a.m. and last about an hour. Additional tours are held seasonally on the first Saturday of the month from June through September. There will be no rain dates and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. \nThe tours are free but advance reservations must be made online through the church’s website\, www.stjohnflatrock.org/tours. Space is limited for each tour. \nThe historically significant churchyard contains graves of distinguished political figures and local citizens as well as those of unnamed 19th-century enslaved persons. \n“As docents\, we strive to communicate the sweep of what happened and how it shaped us\, the good and the sometimes painful\,” Morrice reflected. “We do like to remind visitors that St. John is not a museum\, but a vibrant\, welcoming church. We’re still moving forward\, and welcome all who would like to make more history with us.” \nThe church is located at 1895 Greenville Highway. For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org. \nSt. John in the Wilderness History \nIn 1827\, Charles Baring\, a member of the Baring banking family of England\, built a home in Flat Rock. He and his wife\, Susan\, wanted a summer place to escape the oppressive heat\, humidity\, and malaria of the South Carolina Lowcountry where they lived. \nThe Barings built a chapel on the property of their newly constructed home. Soon after it was built\, the small wooden structure burned down in a woods fire. In 1833\, work began on a second church built of handmade brick. \nIn August 1836\, the Barings deeded their chapel to the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina\, and 20 members of the Flat Rock “summer colony” of Lowcountry planters and merchants formed an Episcopal parish. In the 1890s\, St. John in the Wilderness became part of the Diocese of Western North Carolina; it is the oldest parish in that diocese. \nWith almost all its congregation traveling home to the Lowcountry after the summer season\, the church operated mainly during that season for its first 120 years. So rapid was the growth of the Flat Rock summer community during the 1830s and 1840s\, however\, that the parish membership outgrew the small chapel. In the early 1850s\, the decision was made to rebuild the church\, doubling its size. The English chapel-style structure that stands today is\, with only a few minor modifications\, the church that was completed in 1852.

DESCRIPTION:Are you in need of some good luck? Come help us treat hemlocks to protect against hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) at Little Bradley Falls in Green River Game Land! We’ll be hosting a Volunteer Hemlock Treatment Workday for good luck on Monday\, March 17th\, from 10am – 4pm. \nHemlock trees are an essential and irreplaceable part of western North Carolina’s forests\, but for over 20 years\, they’ve been under threat from the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)—an invasive insect that can kill trees in as little as four years. \nPlease note\, volunteers will be working with insecticide and moving through the forest off trail in potentially challenging terrain. Every volunteer will be paired with an experienced\, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance. \nIn case of inclement weather\, the backup date will be Thursday\, April 17th. \nReach out to Ayla at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org or (828) 252-4783 with any questions.
