The musical’s lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim\, music by Jule Styne\, and book by Arthur Laurents. \nMany consider Gypsy to be one of the greatest American musicals\, with its story loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. Lee’s mother\, Rose\, is the “ultimate showbiz Mom” determined to raise two daughters to be on the stage. Winner of numerous Tony awards\, Drama Desk awards\, and a Laurence Olivier award\, Gypsy features songs including “Let me Entertain You” and “Everything Coming up Roses!” The New York Times described the show as “a wrenching fable … yet also a showcase for one classic song and rousing vaudeville routine after another.” \nTryon Little Theatre’s production is directed by Laura Depta Peal\, alongside music director Pam McNeil. \nTickets are $30 for adults and $15 for those under 18. Franklin Keel\, Asheville’s talented musician\, cellist\, and composer who has made several solo appearances with the BRO\, will lead the orchestra as Guest Conductor. \nPlease join the Blue Ridge Orchestra for two afternoons of orchestral favorites at 3:00 pm: on Saturday\, March 1st\, and Sunday\, March 2nd in Lipinsky Auditorium\, UNC Asheville. We open March Melodrama with Gluck’s dramatic Overture to Iphigenie in Aulis. The BRO then highlights pianist Ivan Seng in Mozart’s Concerto No. 23 in A major\, K. 488.  The second half of the program shifts to Dvorak’s Symphony no. 8 in G major\, which takes its inspiration from the nature and folk music of his homeland Bohemia\, presently the Czech Republic. \nBlue Ridge Orchestra Music Director Emily Mariko Eng says of the program: “We wanted this March program to explore emotions in their extremes. As winter nears its end\, we have all spent probably too much time alone with our thoughts and internal dialogues; we have felt joy\, despair\, hopelessness\, optimism\, anxiety\, peace\, loneliness\, connection\, struggle\, triumph… “March Melodrama” captures all of that\, through the musical voices of Mozart\, Dvorak\, and Gluck. She will also identify tax credits and incentives that can make change more affordable.\nDacia Harris\, Asheville High School teacher\, and students will outline their Eco Challenge/Drawdown system to create teams competing to lower your climate footprint. The students represent an Asheville team that has won a national championship on this subject. They will challenge what you think you know.\nAnd\, Sophie Mullinex of Electrify Asheville will talk about how rebates and tax incentives can offset the cost of cost-saving installations like solar energy and heat pumps.\nThe group will appear at UNCA’s Olli/Reuter Center and on Zoom.
