SUMMARY:WNC Sierra Club Asks: What Can One Person Do About Climate Change?
DESCRIPTION:What can one person do when the Climate Change challenge is so great?\nThe WNC Sierra Club asked multiple knowledgeable people to offer answers at their March meeting.\nAmy Musser\, co-founder and principal of VandeMusser Design\, will provide ideas to do at home for energy-saving changes. Tips will range from easy things that any homeowner or renter can do to DIY challenges. She will also identify tax credits and incentives that can make change more affordable.\nDacia Harris\, Asheville High School teacher\, and students will outline their Eco Challenge/Drawdown system to create teams competing to lower your climate footprint. The students represent an Asheville team that has won a national championship on this subject. They will challenge what you think you know.\nAnd\, Sophie Mullinex of Electrify Asheville will talk about how rebates and tax incentives can offset the cost of cost-saving installations like solar energy and heat pumps.\nThe group will appear at UNCA’s Olli/Reuter Center and on Zoom. Zoom access instructions are here: http://www.WNCSierraClub.org\nThe Sierra Club is the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. SUMMARY:Stories From the Storm: A free writing workshop led by Lauren Graeber
DESCRIPTION:Hurricane Helene roared through our region and blew apart our lives in ways both monumental and mundane. If you’ve struggled to put your experiences of Helene into words – and you’d really like to – this workshop is designed to help you tell your stories from the storm. Participants will work through guided writing exercises each session to gather and articulate their memories of Helene and its aftermath. Sessions are designed to help you begin writing rather than to construct a finished narrative for publication (though we’ll be generating a lot of material that you could work with). No formal writing experience is necessary and no sharing will be required. \nThursdays • 1-2pm \nMarch 6\, 13\, 20 \nAges 18+ \nFREE and open to the public

SUMMARY:Tryon Little Theatre Presents Gypsy
DESCRIPTION:Tryon Little Theater’s big musical of the season\, Gypsy\, will run two weekends — February 28 to March 2\, and March 7 to 9 — at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. The musical’s lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim\, music by Jule Styne\, and book by Arthur Laurents. \nMany consider Gypsy to be one of the greatest American musicals\, with its story loosely based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. Lee’s mother\, Rose\, is the “ultimate showbiz Mom” determined to raise two daughters to be on the stage. Winner of numerous Tony awards\, Drama Desk awards\, and a Laurence Olivier award\, Gypsy features songs including “Let me Entertain You” and “Everything Coming up Roses!” The New York Times described the show as “a wrenching fable … yet also a showcase for one classic song and rousing vaudeville routine after another.” \nTryon Little Theatre’s production is directed by Laura Depta Peal\, alongside music director Pam McNeil. \nTickets are $30 for adults and $15 for those under 18. Tickets can be purchased online at TLTinfo.org\, and by calling 828-859-2466.

SUMMARY:Buffalo Rose at The Grey Eagle
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Rose\, a wildly charismatic six-piece modern folk/Americana band\, plays an all-ages concert at The Grey Eagle! \nBUFFALO ROSE takes the singer-songwriter tradition to a new level by crafting original songs which are emotive\, meticulously arranged\, and inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences that never let a dull or predictable moment creep in. \nThis combination of artistry and enthusiasm makes Buffalo Rose one of the most vital and important groups working today. Rather than play the folk music of the past\, the band gleefully combines genres and ideas together to move acoustic music forward to a new\, contemporary place without ever losing sight of its roots. Fans of Lake Street Dive\, Nickel Creek\, and Punch Brothers will find much to like in this crew. Anyone seeking compelling new acoustic music needs to join Buffalo Rose in the future right now.

SUMMARY:Asheville’s International Women’s Day - Unite & Resist
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 8th 2025 – Bring your signs & your voice to the sidewalks in the center of Pack Square Park at 1 Court Plaza\, Asheville\, NC 28801 \nWomen’s March\nhttps://action.womensmarch.com/events/international-women-s-day-unite-resist-in-city-town-32 \nStarting at 11:00 a.m.\, we will gather to honor the relentless pursuit of justice and equality by women throughout history and protest Trump’s attempt to erase their contributions. \nThe 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote—a monumental step toward gender equality. Yet\, as we stand here in 2025\, we recognize that the journey toward true equality is far from complete. \nIn recent months\, our nation has witnessed a series of actions by President Donald Trump’s administration that threaten to undermine the progress generations of women have fought so hard to achieve. \nWomen Who Paved the Way: \n* Sojourner Truth – American abolitionist and activist for African American civil rights and women’s rights \n* Elizabeth Cady Stanton – Advocate for women’s legal and social equality \n* Susan B. Anthony – Leader of the women’s suffrage movement and social reformer \n* Ida B. Wells-Barnett – Civil rights activist who led a campaign against lynching in the 1890s \n* Cecilia Chung – Civil rights leader and activist for LGBTQ+ rights \n* Peggy Bird\, Darlene Correa\, and Genne James – Founders of the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) \n* Sylvia Rivera – American transgender rights activist \n* Judy Heumann – American disability rights activist \n* Luisa Moreno – Guatemalan social activist and labor movement participant in the U.S. \n* Grace A. Peterson – First female Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force \nThe proposed 8% budget cut to the Pentagon over the next five years\, as reported by The Guardian\, raises concerns about the potential impact on programs that support women in the military. Additionally\, the significant layoffs at the IRS—where over 6\,700 staff members are expected to be dismissed—will disproportionately affect women employed in these roles and hinder services many women rely upon. \nMoreover\, the administration’s executive orders cutting federal benefits for undocumented immigrants not only marginalize vulnerable communities but also disregard the contributions of countless women who are integral to the fabric of our society. These actions reflect a broader pattern of policies that neglect the rights and well-being of women. \nOur response to these challenges must be unwavering. We draw inspiration from the Women’s March on Washington in 2017\, where millions united globally to advocate for women’s rights and social justice. That historic event demonstrated the power of collective action and set the stage for continued resistance against policies that threaten our freedoms. \nOn March 8th\, we must stand in solidarity with all women—transgender\, cisgender\, women of color\, immigrants\, LGBTQ+ individuals\, and those with disabilities. Our diversity is our strength\, and our unity is our power. We must continue to organize\, speak out\, and demand policies that uphold the dignity and rights of every woman \nLet us honor the legacy of those who came before us by recommitting ourselves to the fight for equality. Let us challenge any administration that seeks to roll back our rights. And let us envision a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive\, free from discrimination and oppression. \nTogether\, we are a force for change. Together\, we will achieve equality.
