SUMMARY:Hemlock Hike at Strawberry Gap Trail with Conserving Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, May 18th at 10:00 am for an educational hemlock hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Conserving Carolina at Strawberry Gap Trail near Gerton\, NC. The hike is out and back\, about 2.5 miles total round-trip. Please note that the first half will be very steep. There will be an elevation gain of almost 725 feet over the first 1.3 miles before descending back down to the parking lot for the last half of the hike. This hike may be challenging\, but the view at the top and the hemlocks along the way will make it well worth your while! \nThe route will climb to the top of Ferguson peak where we will see a beautiful stand of Carolina hemlocks. Along the way\, we will traverse through the middle of an eastern hemlock stand. It is a very special opportunity to be able to see both a Carolina hemlock stand and an eastern hemlock stand in the same day! We will cover the ecological importance of both species\, what is threatening both species\, what is being done about it\, and more. \nConserving Carolina AmeriCorps Project Conserve Trails Associate\, Emma LaValley\, will join to discuss the trail\, the history of the property it goes through\, and how Conserving Carolina is connected to trails and preserves around Western North Carolina.  \nWe’ll depart from the Strawberry Gap Trailhead. More information about the meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registering. DESCRIPTION:“Empty Bowls” Benefiting Flat Rock Backpack Program  \nFLAT ROCK\, N.C.   Local ceramic artists will once again fire up their kilns for the seventh year to help hungry children in the greater Flat Rock area.  On Sunday\, May 19\, 2024\, “Empty Bowls\,” a community meal benefiting the Flat Rock Backpack Program\, will take place inside the Parish Hall at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness.   \nAdvance tickets are recommended for the two seatings: 12:00pm-2:00pm and 4:00pm-6:00pm.  Each ticket includes one hand-crafted bowl donated by area potters\, a soup-based meal\, with soups and breads donated by local restaurants and bakers\, plus homemade cookies baked by church members.  For those wishing to eat at home\, take-away is an available option.  \nTickets are $30 per person or $50 for a family of two adults and children under 12.  Tickets are available for purchase online at www.stjohnflatrock.org/empty-bowls.   \nPlease join us for this fun community event. Donations are gratefully accepted throughout the year. The Flat Rock Backpack Program has 501c-3 status. 100% of the money collected goes to feeding at least 150 children in eight schools every weekend. \n“The Backpack Team is so very appreciative of the support from the potters\, the food providers\, and the community\, who make this such a successful event\,” said Debby Staton\, Flat Rock Backpack Program Coordinator. \nThe Parish Hall is located across the street from the church at 1905 Greenville Highway. The chamber music program will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Wilderness Room of the Parish House complex\, located at 1905 Greenville Hwy. \nKate Steinbeck is recognized across the U.S. and in Europe as a unique interpreter of a wide-ranging repertoire\, an innovative producer and collaborator\, as well as an enthusiastic teacher/ coach. Her evolution as a new media artist began in late-90s San Francisco where she was an influential member of the electronic music scene\, owning the experimental record label Orthlorng Musork\, organizing audio-visual cultural events and teaching the first creative coding classes in Max Software. After finishing her masters degree in engineering at UC Berkeley she moved to Oakland where she became co-owner of the Ego Park gallery and helped launch the First Friday art walks. \nHer performances blend cinema and technology into an organic\, improvisational and immersive act\, created from live cameras\, light pads and video algorithms. She has always pushed the boundaries of human-computer interaction\, employing emerging technologies and inventing many of her own\, both through performance and tinkering with hundreds of students in her well established teaching practice. Teso captivates audiences from dive bars to large venues — often with a band called Chilltonic — performing a type of music that can only be described as a genre fluid. Teso has left an indelible mark on the music scene of Asheville. If you see the Afro and the guitar approaching a microphone\, prepare yourself for a spellbinding musical experience. \nThe North Carolina Arts Council created Spark the Arts as an awareness campaign. It was designed to inspire public participation in the arts across the state by highlighting the unique way the arts lift spirits\, bring people together\, and heal. “Recognizing that the people of North Carolina are the spark that keeps the arts alive\, well\, and thriving\, our goal is to ignite the resurgence of our state’s arts sector from the pandemic by connecting residents and visitors to arts experiences and arts stories across our state\,” says the North Carolina Arts Council.
