DESCRIPTION:Learn about Flat Rock History \nTours of St. John in the Wilderness  \nFLAT ROCK\, N.C.  Tours of the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will resume on March 15.  \nThe guided tours of the church and churchyard (cemetery) are led by church docents.  “One of the joys of attending a beautiful holy place like St. John in the Wilderness is sharing it with our visitors. Our history is intertwined not just with the history of Flat Rock\, but with that of coastal South Carolina\, the home of our founders and earliest congregants\,” said Polly Morrice\, one of the docents leading the tours. \nHeld on the third Saturdays of the month from March through December\, tours start inside the Carriage Door entrance of the Church promptly at 11 a.m. and last about an hour.  Additional tours are held seasonally on the first Saturday of the month from June through September. There will be no rain dates and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.   \nThe tours are free but advance reservations must be made online through the church’s website\, www.stjohnflatrock.org/tours.  Space is limited for each tour. \nThe historically significant churchyard contains graves of distinguished political figures and local citizens as well as those of unnamed 19th-century enslaved persons.   \n“As docents\, we strive to communicate the sweep of what happened and how it shaped us\, the good and the sometimes painful\,” Morrice reflected. “We do like to remind visitors that St. John is not a museum\, but a vibrant\, welcoming church. We’re still moving forward\, and welcome all who would like to make more history with us.”  \nThe church is located at 1895 Greenville Highway.  For more information call the church office at 828-693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org. \nSt. John in the Wilderness History \nIn 1827\, Charles Baring\, a member of the Baring banking family of England\, built a home in Flat Rock. He and his wife\, Susan\, wanted a summer place to escape the oppressive heat\, humidity\, and malaria of the South Carolina Lowcountry where they lived.  \nThe Barings built a chapel on the property of their newly constructed home. Soon after it was built\, the small wooden structure burned down in a woods fire. In 1833\, work began on a second church built of handmade brick.  \nIn August 1836\, the Barings deeded their chapel to the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina\, and 20 members of the Flat Rock “summer colony” of Lowcountry planters and merchants formed an Episcopal parish. In the 1890s\, St. John in the Wilderness became part of the Diocese of Western North Carolina; it is the oldest parish in that diocese. \nWith almost all its congregation traveling home to the Lowcountry after the summer season\, the church operated mainly during that season for its first 120 years. So rapid was the growth of the Flat Rock summer community during the 1830s and 1840s\, however\, that the parish membership outgrew the small chapel. In the early 1850s\, the decision was made to rebuild the church\, doubling its size. The English chapel-style structure that stands today is\, with only a few minor modifications\, the church that was completed in 1852.

We’ll be hosting a Volunteer Hemlock Treatment Workday for good luck on Monday\, March 17th\, from 10am – 4pm.  \nHemlock trees are an essential and irreplaceable part of western North Carolina’s forests\, but for over 20 years\, they’ve been under threat from the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)—an invasive insect that can kill trees in as little as four years. \nPlease note\, volunteers will be working with insecticide and moving through the forest off trail in potentially challenging terrain. SUMMARY:Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning at Warren Wilson College
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning at Warren Wilson College is a vessel for community building\, exploration\, adventure\, place-based learning\, and the ignition of new passion for lifelong learners. These are non-credit bearing experiences\, ranging in length from one to three weeks\, that bring learners to our campus in Asheville\, NC or send them on global explorations with Warren Wilson faculty. These courses highlight the unique magic of Warren Wilson College\, which has been a hub of experiential learning since its founding as the Asheville Farm School in 1894. \nAdults of all ages are encouraged to apply (18+). The majority of courses will take place on Warren Wilson’s campus\, and others will be Worldwide Courses that depart from Asheville but travel to various corners of the globe. \nCameraless Eco-Photography Weekend\nJoin us for a weekend of playful sustainability in the darkroom! We’ll work with ecologically-friendly and sustainably sourced materials to make cameraless photographic prints\, both in the darkroom and under the bright blue skies of our beautiful Warren Wilson campus. \nWeekend Course\nLevel: All\nCost: $260 (+ $25 materials fee) \nStorytelling Through Cloth Weekend\nExperience how fiber arts can have a powerful impact on storytelling\, building community\, and create a space for healing. Learn hand stitching techniques such as embroidery\, applique and fabric collage\, bringing story into a visual tactile piece of art.  \nWeekend Course\nLevel: Beginner to Intermediate\nCost: $260 (+ $30 materials fee) \nOne-Legged Stool Weekend\nWe will explore the definition of a chair and balance. The course will cover shaping wood and mortise and tenon joinery by using a drill press\, routers\, tapering jig\, tentoning jig on a table saw and a square chisel mortiser. We will also cover sanding and finishing. By the end of the class you will have a stool that you will enjoy for a very long time. \nWeekend Course\nLevel: Advanced Beginner +\nCost: $260 (+$50 materials fee) \nBlock Printing on Fabric (and a little dyeing\, too!) Weekend\nIn this weekend course\, learn to design and carve your own lino-style stamps and block print onto fabric in a variety of eye-pleasing ways: single motifs\, repeating patterns\, border designs\, and more. Learn the difference between a negative design and a positive design and how each creates an impact on your fabric. By the end of the weekend\, you’ll be proficient at carving\, inking\, and printing onto fabrics and clothing. \nWeekend Course\nLevel: All\nCost: $260 (+ $25 materials fee) \nBroom Craft: an Introduction to Appalachian-Style Broom Making Weekend\nThere was a time in which folks around the world bundled native grasses together to form brooms used to sweep. In this workshop you will spend the weekend learning skills practiced for generations here in the Appalachian mountains to craft a series of whisk brooms and a floor sweeping broom. At the end of workshop\, you will have developed some broom-crafting skills and you will have made a small collection of brooms to take back home with you. \nWeekend Course\nLevel: Beginner\nCost: $260 (+ $60 materials fee) \nMaking and Selling Natural Products Weekend\nIn this two-day course\, we’ll learn what makes natural products natural\, formulating and making these products\, figuring cost of goods to sell wholesale or retail\, buying to maximize profit\, branding and marketing and much more! \nWeekend Course\nLevel: Advanced Beginner +\nCost: $260 (+$60 materials fee) \nRhythm Workshop for Musicians Weekend\nThis course is designed for professional musicians and adult music students who wish to develop their rhythmic skills and knowledge. An area of music theory that is often neglected\, rhythm is core to building a deeper level of musicianship. All students in this class develop rhythmic vocabulary and proficiency through group performance in an experiential context that combines the mind and body to holistically ingrain rhythmic prowess. \nWeekend Course\nLevel: Beginner +\nCost: $260
