DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Friday\, April 4th at 12:30pm for an educational hemlock hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and the Blue Ridge Conservancy at their campus trail in Blowing Rock\, NC. The hike will be a 2.2 mile loop\, and is considered moderate terrain. \nAlong the way\, we will traverse through one of HRI’s Hemlock Conservation Areas (HCA). These hemlocks were treated in winter of 2023. The hike will also take participants past a hemlock health monitoring plot to discuss methods of evaluating treatment success. Overall\, participants can expect to learn about hemlock ecology\, the threat of the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid\, and a variety of different control methods being used on both state and national forests in NC\, as well as on other public and private lands across the range of eastern hemlock. \nA staff member from Blue Ridge Conservancy will also join to discuss their efforts protecting the lands around you. \nWe’ll depart from the Blue Ridge Conservancy Campus trailhead. This immersive course offers students an authentic\, nature-based herbal education led by experienced professionals. Students will engage in herb walks\, medicine making\, and ethical harvesting practices while learning about local plant species. \nKey Highlights:\n*84 Hours of Herbal Learning: Study 25 local herbs\, practical uses\, and the Materia Medica.\n*Herbal Energetics: Experience plants in their natural habitat to understand their energy and properties.\n*Hands-On Medicine Making: Take home herbal tinctures\, salves\, syrups\, and more.\n*Traditional Herbalism: Explore various herbal traditions including Chinese\, Ayurvedic\, and Native American.\n*Botany & Plant Identification: Learn safe herbal use and plant taxonomy.\n*Wildcrafting & Stewardship: Focus on ethical harvesting and plant protection. \nClasses are held on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from April 5th through October.
