DESCRIPTION:Join the Hemlock Restoration Initiative on Thursday\, June 12th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as we lend a hand to our partners at the Forest Restoration Alliance (FRA) located in Waynesville\, NC. Instead of chemically treating hemlock trees\, volunteers will be combating hemlock woolly adelgid by supporting the work of the FRA at their research facility in Waynesville\, where they are breeding HWA-resistant hemlock trees. \nVolunteers will complete tasks in FRA’s greenhouse and nursery to help with their selective breeding program. Volunteers will also get a tour of the facility by researcher Ben Smith and learn about their efforts to restore hemlocks. This is a great opportunity to help hemlocks without handling insecticide. \nRegistration is required. Fill out the form on our event webpage by Tuesday\, June 10th to register. SUMMARY:Pink Beds Hemlock Hike with Mills River Partnership
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, June 13th from 1:00pm – 4:30pm at Pink Beds Loop for an educational hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Mills River Partnership.  \nWe will begin near the Pink Beds picnic area\, where several healthy hemlocks line the edge of the field. As we make our way through the loop\, we will stop to talk about hemlocks in the area\, their importance in our riparian ecosystems\, and how we manage to control hemlock woolly adelgid.  \nMills River Partnership will join to discuss the Mills River watershed\, the stream’s present day uses\, and a brief history of the stream. \nThis 3.2-mile loop is mostly flat\, with a few creek crossings and gentle inclines. It’s an excellent choice for those looking to enjoy the forest without a strenuous hike. \nThe backup weather date for this hike will be June 27th at 1pm. If you have any questions\, contact Ayla Busch at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783. While the hike is free to attend\, your RSVP is required\, and space is limited. Please sign up by Wednesday\, June 11th by filling out the form linked on our event webpage. More information about where to meet and what to bring will be provided after registration.
