SUMMARY:Snorkel the French Broad River’s Headwaters in Rosman\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Join MountainTrue staff and partners for a guided snorkeling experience on the French Broad River’s headwaters at Champion Park in Rosman\, NC. Come immerse yourself amongst the vibrant and diverse aquatic life calling the cold\, clear\, waters of the upper French Broad home. Our guides will be Luke Etchison – Western Region Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Kevin Merrill – Owner & Biologist with Oxbow River Snorkeling. \nLuke and Kevin have intimate knowledge of the fish\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and invertebrates on this particular site and within Western North Carolina in general. You’ll learn about what you’re seeing\, the conservation and preservation efforts occurring to help protect these species and their habitats\, and other regional water quality and outdoor recreation projects happening throughout the watershed. \nMasks\, snorkels\, wetsuits\, and booties can be rented through our partnership with Mountains to Seas. If you rent equipment\, please make sure to complete ALL of the sizing fields for each ticketed guest to ensure we get the correct size for wetsuits and booties. \nDue to the sensitivity of the site and the capacity of our guides\, we will be limiting this adventure to two separate two-hour time slots with no more than ten people each. \nThe first tour starts at 10:00 AM and the second tour at 12:00 PM. \nPlease Note that snorkeling tours like this one are at the mercy of Mother Nature. High water velocity and poor visibility following a heavy rain event may create conditions unfavorable for this activity to continue as planned. If this occurs for our scheduled date\, we will unfortunately need to cancel and refund any expenses. \nRegister:\n**If the ticket type or timeslot that you need are not available please contact amy@mountaintrue.org for assistance or to be put on the waitlist. Registration will close on June 14th.

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING + PERFORMANCE: Man Ray’s Return to Reason
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening + Performance: Man Ray’s Return to Reason\nWith a solo performance by Chad Beattie\nThursday\, June 20\, 2024 at 7 PM\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street}\nFree and open to all \nJoin us for a screening of Man Ray’s newly restored experimental masterpieces Return to Reason (1923-1929) with a new soundtrack by Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl. The evening will begin with a solo performance by the Asheville-based multi-instrumentalist Chad Beattie\, followed by a free screening of the films. \nAbout Return to Reason: \nThe four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929\, Le Retour à la raison\, Emak-Bakia\, L’Étoile de mer and Les Mystères du Château du Dé represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema\, a seminal nexus of experimental technique\, surrealist narrative\, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt\, pepper\, pins\, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns\, a twirling fairground ride\, and a female nude\, among other striking images\, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison\, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason\, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. The band’s cosmic sounds complement Ray’s work by conjuring the beautiful\, ineffable\, haunting\, and sublime. \nBorn Emmanuel Radnitzky in the United States in 1890 to Russian Jewish immigrants\, Man Ray is considered a pioneer of the surrealist and Dada movements\, with work spanning painting\, sculpture\, photography\, and filmmaking. Disillusioned with conventional art and shaped by the trauma of World War I\, along with the emergence of modern media culture\, Man Ray and other Dadaists turned to audacious formal experimentation to capture an unreasoning world. Though Man Ray is perhaps best remembered for his striking fashion photography\, and the camera-less pictures he called “rayographs”—photograms made by positioning objects directly onto photosensitive material\, which he then exposed—his inventive forays into filmmaking are lesser known. In his silent shorts\, Man Ray expanded his avant-garde techniques to the realm of moving images\, playing with chance and light to fantastic effect. \nAbout the performance: \nChad Beattie has been making music under the name Yes Selma for the past decade\, rummaging through clatter and drones. Since relocating from Baltimore to Asheville in 2021\, he has found a distinct voice in the hammered dulcimer\, exploring its dynamic range through the repetition of melodic patterns\, the reverberation of harmonic phrases – both in his solo work as well as with vibraphonist Adam Lion under their duo\, Aperture. Beattie’s latest album Tapioca Daydreams was released in 2023.

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p
