Plenty of demos and individual discussions as well as time to work on your own pieces. \nAll skill levels would benefit from this class\, especially beginners. (Advanced techniques are an option for those who have taken a prior class.)   \nGina will provide 4 oz. of cold wax\, tools to borrow\, and R&F pigment sticks for class use\, 2 sheets of Arches Oil paper\, various mark making tools to share and samples of materials such as stencils\, pan pastels\, and a few collage materials\, etc.  Additional wax will be available for sale. DESCRIPTION:Asheville\, NC — On August 29\, 2026\, at 7:30pm\, Missy Bell of Mouse House Productions will premiere her debut feature film: Erased\, at the Diana Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. The tender-hearted drama stars local actors Thomas L. Townsend\, Elias Hamilton\, and Lauren H. Davis. \nWhen Missy Bell wrote the screenplay for her debut feature film\, she had no way of knowing shooting would land in the wake of Hurricane Helene.  \nCo-producers Missy and Michael Bell\, joked with the crew\, “If we can flush\, we can film!” as production dates approached for shooting the hope-core drama\, Erased. \nMichael said\, “It ended up that just one day before the deadline we’d set for ourselves\, we got non-potable water back in the pipes.” Filming took place in November and December of 2024\, and the film was completed in September 2025. \nMissy and Michael run their production company\, Mouse House Productions\, in a collaborative and cooperative manner\, putting kindness first and making sure that everyone who works on the film gets a cut of the film’s profit. The premiere event\, scheduled for August 29th at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts\, is no exception. Missy said\, “This event will serve to launch Erased into screening all over the world. We’re excited to celebrate this milestone with our community right here in Asheville.” \nThe premiere event will feature live performances from the film’s composer (Joshua Hummel) and soundtrack musicians\, a screening of the film\, remarks from the filmmakers\, a red carpet\, merch\, and a mixer with the cast and crew following the screening\, where audience members can get autographs and mingle with the actors and other creatives in person. “It’s a red carpet comeback from Helene for the entire community. I cannot wait to celebrate this film and what it means\, knowing what we’ve all overcome!” \nAbout the Film: Erased takes place over One Crazy Night\, and is the story of Evan\, a thirty-something business man working on the deal of his life. When the now 18 year old son he chose to abandon at birth appears at his door in the middle of the night\, Evan is forced to choose between the deal and the possibility of a  relationship with his son. An early access reviewer said: “[Erased is] tender\, funny\, mysterious\, and leaves the viewer with curiosities\, rounding out an excellent cinematic experience.” \nThe Asheville Premiere of Erased will take place on August 29\, 2026 at 7:30 PM (doors and red carpet at 7PM) at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Meet and talk with Holland Van Gores about his process in creating incredible wooden sculptures. \nHolland has spent the better part of his life working with wood. As a child\, he had access to his father’s workshop and was able to use the tools and supplies. Learning these skills early in life\, led him to choose a career in construction where he honed his skills in California before taking on construction work in remote Costa Rica and eventually the United States Virgin Islands. Holland and his family relocated to western North Carolina in 2012 where he built a studio surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest. He is constantly experimenting with forms and textures\, often inspired by organic themes. “Making something with my hands allows me to feel a connection to that piece\, giving it a purpose.”

DESCRIPTION:(FREE) John Davis Held will be available to share his process in creating original oil and pastel paintings\, as he probes the extraordinary and sacred mystery in his work. \nIn his many travels\, John spent several months living in an African Hut before hitch-hiking across Europe to paint the cathedrals\, castles\, and countryside. John’s oil paintings are strongly influenced by the Hudson River School\, the Luminism movement\, and the masters of the Renaissance. His pastels\, with their beautiful pure pigments\, are like no other artist’s. All of his work is known for having a strong sense of light and peace. He currently draws inspiration from the wildlife in Western North Carolina which include visiting bears\, extraordinary birds\, his beautiful wife\, and their four cats.

DESCRIPTION:“Play on\, there’s no such thing as better days\,” Damien Jurado sings on “Roger\,” the sweeping wash of a song that opens Reggae Film Star\, his 18th full length album and second release from Jurado’s own Maraqopa Records label. But as he enters his 25th year as a recording artist\, it’s clear these are\, at the least\, very good days for Jurado on the creative front. In these 12 songs\, which evoke half-recalled dreams and overheard conversations\, the cosmic rushes headlong into the autobiographical and specific moments on the clock fade from past to future to scenes set only in the eternal now. Playing out like a backlot documentary filmed on the location of an unnamed TV or film set—maybe a sitcom taping\, or perhaps it’s a low budget science fiction B-movie\, or could it be a talk show?—the album is populated by performers awaiting call times\, camera operators praying for their shot\, and studio audiences rapt with anticipation. The stars here eschew glitz and glamor. Instead\, they wander grocery stores and parking lots in the verdant Pacific Northwest and the desert Southwest\, looking for payphones and a sense of purpose. Produced by Jurado with multi-instrumentalist Josh Gordon and recording engineer Alex Bush at Sonikwire studio in Irvine\,CA\, Jurado’s home away from home and musical headquarters\, the record’s compositions are among the most musically rich in his vast discography\, encompassing romantic AM gold\, ‘60s psychedelia\, driving rock & roll\, Latin shuffles\, and left of the dial ambiance. Strings swell\, melodic bass bubbles\, and piano sparkles\, undergirding Jurado’s unmistakable voice\, at once intimately present and ghostly\, grounded in the here and now but capable\, at any moment\, of drifting off into the divinatory. Following threads established by 2021’s The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania\, the album sees Jurado embracing his auteur era\, penning vignettes that arrive with little fanfare and depart quicker than you might suspect\, only to linger long after they wrap. Seeking a skeleton key to decipher the action is beside the point—Jurado’s songs are worlds meant to be lived in\, not picked apart—but on the beatific single “What Happened To The Class Of ‘65?” the singer imagines himself as both the viewer and the viewed\, the eye behind the camera and its subject. After a ten-year break\, they reunited and toured in 2015\, and in 2017 released a new LP  —  A Sentimental Education and an EP of instrumentals — A Place of Greater Safety. \nOther recent reissues include a deluxe 2xLP version of their classic Penthouse album (on Rhino) and another 2xLP set Lunafied that collects all the covers the band recorded in the 1990s. \nNow scattered around the country (Los Angeles\, New York and Austin) the band retains the same lineup that operated from 1999 to 2005: Dean Wareham on vocals/guitar\, his wife Britta Phillips on bass\, Sean Eden on guitar\, and Lee Wall on drums. \nSISTER RAY DAVIES \nSister Ray Davies is a brilliantly named new duo formed by Adam Morrow and Jamie Sego. They might be based in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, but their acclaimed debut album Holy Island (released in November 2025 via Sonic Cathedral and Well Kept Secret) is a concept record about the ancient religious outpost off the coast of northeast England.

We will also learn to prepare an indigo vat and how to prepare fabric to dye with scouring techniques. Students can expect to make pillow or napkin sized sample pieces and a cotton scarf. An additional small piece of clothing to upcycle can be brought from home. \nSuitable for beginner and intermediate skill levels.

SUMMARY:ENCOUNTERS WITH CREATIVES – JERRY MAXEY\, BASKET AND MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Jerry Maxey will be on hand to demonstrate his basket weaving techniques developed over decades of persistent and skillful mastery. \nJerry’s work is wicker-weave basketry of dyed rattan and seagrass cord\, and lathe turned wood bases\, rings and rims. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind handmade original\, even when he makes a second piece with the same construction. The wood incorporated in his basketry is all found wood\, generally trees that have fallen in storms\, and the wooden elements have all the variety that nature provides. Once the wood has been turned\, he leaves them indoors for at least three weeks to cure and stabilize. Then he does a final sanding and finishes each piece with pure tung oil. The rattan spokes are then attached to the wood to construct the basket\, weaving in the colors and patterns as he goes. When completed\, he finishes the entire piece with tung oil to bring out the colors and produce a slightly aged patina to the work.

SUMMARY:Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands
DESCRIPTION:This is the biannual flagship event of the Southern Highland Craft Guild\, a nearly 100 year old alliance of fine craftspeople across the 9 states of Southern Appalachia. Over 100 artists will have their work for sale\, ranging from fine jewelry to handcrafted furniture to handwoven garments and more\, including representation from Qualla Arts\, the artisan cooperative of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. There are artist demonstrations throughout the event all four days\, and live mountain music on Saturday and Sunday.
