SUMMARY:An Artful Journey: The Honest Eye - Camille Pissaro's Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:Seeing Impressionism Clearly: Camille Pissarro and The Honest Eye \nStep into the origins of Impressionism through the work of Camille Pissarro—often called the first Impressionist. Born in St. Thomas to French Jewish parents and shaped by experiences across South America and Paris\, Pissarro brought a uniquely global and human perspective to modern painting. On this Artful Journey to the Denver Art Museum\, we’ll explore how his background informed his luminous landscapes\, intimate city scenes\, still lifes\, and portrayals of everyday life\, revealing Impressionism not as a fleeting style\, but as a deeply thoughtful way of seeing the world. \nFriday\, March 27th\, 10:30 – 12:00\nBlack Mountain Center for the Arts\n$25 (All Refreshments Included)

The 35-year-old psychologist soon realizes he’s ensnared in a dangerous web of deep-woods survivalists\, calling themselves the United Survivalist Army (The Real U.S.A.)\, preparing for Armageddon in the remote mountains of Western North Carolina. The preppers’ battle cry\, “Prepare to Survive or Die\,” targets the “zombies”— unprepared citizens like Pope. \nThe doomsayer-preppers believe the zombies will roam the streets and plunder their carefully hidden cache of supplies when the economy collapses\, the electrical grid fails\, and apocalyptic weather threatens to wipe people off the map. To survive\, Pope is forced to succumb to the same kick-ass\, pit-bull tactics of his abusive\, alcoholic father against the homegrown militant terrorists. But first\, he must win an inner battle with his tortured past to find the line between his integrity and his own survival.

SUMMARY:AyurPrana Listening Room Presents: Tara Clerkin Trio with Walt McClements
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Tara Clerkin Trio \nwith Walt McClements \nThursday\, March 26th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6:00 PM || Event 7:00 PM \nTara Clerkin Trio \nNot far off two years from the day\, Bristol’s Tara Clerkin Trio return to World of Echo and the EP format for a five song collection of quixotic\, emotional redolence. But do not mistake their absence for inertia. If their musical output has been a little sparse during those in-between years\, limited to a few solo ventures and an astonishing ten minute long piece as a trio\, their time has otherwise been richly spent: continuous writing and recording\, extensive live performances across Europe and Japan\, a cultivation of local and more far-flung artistic connections (musical and otherwise)\, and a monthly NTS show that\, through the voice of others\, speaks most obviously to their own unorthodox interests. It’s the conflux of that winding activity that leads indirectly to On The Turning Ground\, 26 minutes of probing\, thoughtful composition that draws from no one specific source. \nTheir inspirations might be centreless\, but the trio still possess a very obvious anchor in the form of their hometown. Bristol stands as a city of multitudes\, heterogenous and vibrant in such a way as to allow it to renew and remake time and again. Tara Clerkin Trio drink from that same well\, duly reflecting a rich musical heritage built on fwd-facing electronic subcultures and experimental urges. As such\, On The Turning Ground finds them subject to their own subtle internal evolution\, the pervasive sense that you’ve caught them mid-bloom\, on their way to becoming but never anything but themselves. \nThe two instrumental pieces that bookend the EP stand as a perfect case in point\, displaying an increasing mastery of compositional space. Pensive and restrained\, ‘Brigstow’ and ‘Once Around’ both emanate an interstitial quality that’s not so much after- as in-between-hours\, miniature dub-folk symphonies held together by the kind of tacit understanding that remains the preserve of only the closest of family units. If those two tracks are shaped by a sense of shifting temporality\, then the three vocal-led pieces that comprise the record’s core feel like a gentle ossifying of aesthetic into something approaching their own unique form of avant-pop. ‘Pop’ is\, of course\, a broadly subjective concept\, but there’s no avoiding the overt sparkling melodicism of songs like ‘Marble Walls’ and ‘The Turning Ground’\, undeniable re-directions of that late 90s impulse to bend pop sensibilities into off-centre terrain\, to render the familiar new again. This is what Tara Clerkin Trio do\, gently pulling the ground from under your feet\, turning you to face something you’d not quite seen before. To view the world as they do: sideways\, sometimes\, all of the time. \nWalt McClements \nWalt McClements is an accordionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. His solo compositions focus on processed accordion\, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His debut record\, “A Hole in the Fence” was released in 2021 on American Dreams\, and utilized a minimal palette of accordions processed through pedals to create glacial soundscapes and odes to hidden worlds. On his latest record\, and first for Western Vinyl\, “On a Painted Ocean”\, he expands his sonic tools to include lush synths\, droning pipe organs\, and spirited horns\, creating a vibrant journey from solitary stillness to community exuberance. The record also follows last year’s “Rain on the Road”\, a collaborative album with harpist Mary Lattimore\, released on Thrill Jockey.

SUMMARY:AyurPrana Listening Room Presents: Rosenau & Sanborn with special guest Joe Westerlund
DESCRIPTION:APLR Presents: Rosenau & Sanborn \nwith Joe Westerlund \nWednesday\, March 25th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6PM || Event 7PM \nRosenau & Sanborn \nAfter nearly 20 years of knowing one another\, the collaboration between Nick Sanborn and Chris Rosenau seemed inevitable but ended up accidental\, an Eaux Claires music-festival lark that had immediate chemistry. As they were playing that first show\, they realized they were already making a record. They reconvened in a small cottage in North Carolina in 2017 to finish what was started. They recorded the improvisations\, kept the working mixes and titles\, as well as the bird songs and traffic sounds that drifted into the microphones. The result was 2019’s Bluebird\, a little five-track wonder that made you feel like you were sitting in the room between them\, smiling as they found their wordless rapport. \nTwo years later\, Rosenau (Volcano Choir\, Collections of Colonies of Bees) and Sanborn (Sylvan Esso\, Made of Oak) got together again. They had fun during round two\, but the sessions were neither as carefree as that first attempt nor more focused in a way that felt compelling and new. The pair shelved those pieces to try again when the time seemed right. \nThen there was a pandemic. There were tours. There were other records. There was life at large. By the time Rosenau ventured back to Betty’s (Sylvan Esso’s studio in the North Carolina woods) to try again\, four years had flashed past. \nFor the absorbing follow-up\, 2026’s simply titled Two\, they “unprepared\,” Rosenau arriving to the sessions with a novel guitar tuning he’d never used and Sanborn with a reconfigured electronics rig that forced him to abandon old patterns. The result feels like sitting alongside two old friends as they surprise one another with unheard stories from their recent pasts and ideas for their futures. \nThe night before the duo wrote “Walrus\,” Sanborn had performed at a rave with his techno duo GRRL x Made of Oak. Of the track\, Rosenau writes\, “Honestly\, the approach on this track was ‘Ok! Saturday night… Let’s party!’ It all felt real good. From there\, we got Nick’s gear back up from the night before\, followed our process\, and went for it. I remember Nick turning into an octopus in front of my eyes as he wrangled both the modular rig he had set up for this one\, as well as the insane drum machine situation.” \nTwo is set to be released physically in indie record stores on March 6 via Psychic Hotline\, with a digital street date following on March 20. \nJoe Westerlund \nFor the last five years\, Joe Westerlund’s music has explored and documented his personal unknowns. Before the 2020 release of his solo debut\, Reveries in the Rift\, Westerlund was largely a band guy\, whether that meant charting the edges of folk-rock with his childhood friends in DeYarmond Edison and\, later\, Megafaun\, or offering the anchor to acts like Watchhouse and The Dead Tongues. But on Reveries\, he wondered what it would be like to make meditative percussive music\, to wander into the middle distance of his own introspection with his drum kit. Some of those findings reappeared on 2023’s lauded Elegies for the Drift\, where he stared into several painful ends—of a 20-year partnership and the death of multiple friends\, collaborators\, and mentors—and tried to send those relationships off with sound. These were largely open-ended and improvisational albums\, Westerlund paying less attention to sheer rhythmic patterns than emotional frameworks. \nDuring the same half-decade\, though\, Westerlund became engrossed in studying the clave\, the metric pattern that first defined so much Afro-Cuban and Latin music and then drifted into almost every corner of jazz and rock. What did it mean for an idea to be so flexible\, for it to fit so many forms while retaining its own essence? His interest in composing with this new musical curiosity—that is\, in constructing grooves that felt instinctual and irrepressible—compounded amid the pandemic\, when people desperately wanted to remember what it was like to inhabit their bodies in a room crowded by strangers. The result is another leap into the unknown for Westerlund: Curiosities from the Shift\, a 12-track playground of endlessly interwoven beats and melodies\, where Westerlund’s clave enthusiasm collides with his textural experimentalism\, where his rhythmic symphony of one shakes hands with a half-dozen friends decorating this space alongside him. \nCuriosities began taking accidental shape when Califone mastermind Tim Rutili asked Westerlund for a few ideas amid lockdown. Westerlund had been playing in Califone for years\, and Rutili was hoping a long-distance beat might spark a song. Nothing concrete came of those sketches\, as Rutili pursued other paths. So Westerlund went his own way with them\, instead\, steadily building those ideas into his own compositions. They are now the basis of the three-piece suite that holds Curiosities’ first half\, beginning with the junkyard percussion and delightful bass splashes that frame “Tem” and ending with the surrealistic boom-bap of thumb pianos and shakers on “Can Tangle.” There is a hard-won joy to these numbers\, as if Westerlund is delighting in real time in spotting a potential dead end but finding his own way forward\, anyway. \nThose songs became\, too\, a kind of working roadmap for the terrain that Westerlund explores across Curiosities\, from the call-and-response glory of opener “Nu Male Uno” to the uncanny amorphousness of closer “Felt Like Floating.” All of these songs are defined by an identifiable rhythm\, like the loping strut at the center of “Midpoint” and the head-nodding pulse that winds through “Persurverance\,” winkingly misspelled to suit his North Carolina-via-Wisconsin pronunciation. But those are springboards for other textures\, moods\, and notions\, like the New Age references—shimmering metallophones\, chattering birds\, retiring flutes—that circle through “Midpoint” or the dub-indebted delays and gamelan hymns that bubble up through “Persurverance.” This is deeply multivalent music\, each number’s propulsive core counterbalanced by a series of surprising choices. Bittersweetness and joy\, grief and liberation\, sighs and smiles: It all exists here\, tangling toward infinity. \nThis complexity stems\, in part\, from a happy accident. Late in 2023\, around the time of his 43rd birthday\, Westerlund booked a week of studio time at Betty’s\, the bucolic space built and operated in the North Carolina countryside by his friends and occasional collaborators in Sylvan Esso. He meant to be there for five days before embarking on a brief tour with Setting\, the essential instrumental trio that has become a key outlet for his improvisational vim. But after a Setting bandmate got sick\, Westerlund booked another five days alone at Betty’s\, giving himself time\, space\, and quiet to keep finessing these compositions\, to see where else his assemblages of metallophones and drums\, electronics and keyboards might lead\, what magic they still had to reveal. \nWhen\, for instance\, he took a break outside while recording “Elegy (for OLAibi)\,” a tribute to late Japanese experimentalist Ai\, he noticed that the air-conditioning seemed to be sighing in time to the music he was making inside. He recorded the sound and wove it into the track. It is now one layer among so many\, one feeling amid a diorama of them. In the months after those sessions were done\, Westerlund reached out to seven friends—Califone’s Rutilli\, saxophonist Sam Gendel\, trumpeter Trever Hagen\, and violinists Libby Rodenbough and Chris Jusell among them. Sure\, these were his most thoroughly composed and precisely built works ever\, but he wanted to hear what happened when his pals responded in real time\, when they added bits of themselves back to what he’d made. They delivered grace\, depth\, and feeling\, with their parts pulling back curtains on hidden recesses of Westerlund’s rhythmic worlds. \nWesterlund readily admits he is surprised by Curiosities from the Shift\, by its insistence on groove and meter rather than drifting abstraction. Having lived and worked so long in the trenches of bands\, he assumed he was done functioning within basic meter\, at least for a while. But music is\, of course\, rarely a binary\, where one element obviates all room for the other. These 12 songs fuse so many of Westerlund’s loves into pieces that are endlessly fascinating\, using familiar elements to\, once again\, render another of his adventures into the unknown. Playful but tender\, wistful but wondrous\, driven by beats but not bound by them\, Curiosities from the Shift is Westerlund’s definitive statement so far\, the solo drummer record that opens wide to reveal a musical and emotional landscape richer than perhaps even he imagined he might find

SUMMARY:First Pulls: Works of Butcher Shop Press
DESCRIPTION:Butcher Shop Press begins its creative journey by presenting its first group exhibition\, ‘First Pulls: Works of Butcher Shop Press’\, on display from March 25 through April 4 with a silent auction of artwork donated by artist Phil Garrett. All proceeds will go to Butcher Shop Press to raise funds for additional studio equipment. \nButcher Shop Press is an art-based initiative housed in a space at the back of Studio 116 where a butcher shop once operated in the early 1900s. Today\, the space has been transformed into a working print studio dedicated to exploring the craft and possibilities of printmaking. \nEach hand-pulled print in this exhibit was created using the studio’s Takach etching press\, generously donated by artist Marty Whaley Adams. The works highlight a range of approaches to printmaking and reflect the creativity of local artists exploring the unique processes of monotype and other print techniques.

SUMMARY:SPIRITED IMPROV PLAYSHOP SERIES
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT SPIRITED IMPROV\nSpirited Improv is a unique fusion of expressive arts\, spiritual practice\, and group play that helps you release fear\, trust the unknown\, and show up as your truest self.\nSpirited Improv is a soul-centered community experience that uses improvisational play as the container for spiritual growth\, personal transformation\, and authentic connection. Rather than focusing on comedy or performance\, we use improv as a living practice\, one that invites presence\, trust\, curiosity\, and responsiveness in the moment. \nFacilitated by Jessica Chilton\, who brings over 20 years of improvisational performing arts experience and 16 years as an expressive arts therapist\, weaving creativity\, spirituality\, and presence into a safe\, transformative group experience. \nThrough embodied improvisational play\, movement\, voice\, storytelling\, sound\, and silence\, we create a living container where authenticity is welcomed and presence is practiced. Over time\, this shared experience fosters deep connection\, confidence\, and a felt sense of belonging. \nSpirited Improv is for those seeking a spiritual community grounded in lived experience\, where growth happens through relationship\, creativity\, and the courage to show up fully. As we transform individually through improv\, we strengthen the collective and contribute to a more compassionate world. \nWHAT PAST PARTICIPANTS ARE SAYING \n“Spirited Improv is authentic\, vulnerable and connective. It meets my need to deeply feel\, be seen and see others. On my first night I experienced such a profound healing experience after sharing what was on my heart. It was like a sound\, healing touch\, full moon energy bath that opened my heart. ” ~ Kate \n“Spirited Improv is a fun and little bit edgy way of interacting with the mystery of the moment. You decide how much you want to interact or observe from the audience so you never have to do anything you don’t want to do. It is an opportunity to let go of control and explore the spontaneity of life and creativity in a supportive\, safe environment..” ~ Kenyon \n“I got to play\, move my body\, laugh\, take joy in watching my friends come alive\, give and receive big hugs\, and feel the presence of the ancestors who always join me. There’s something so sacred about being present with others while we play\, witness and embody what is.” ~ Sue \nWHO IS THIS FOR \nPeople drawn to spirituality\, personal growth\, and inner exploration \nThose seeking genuine connection\, community\, and a sense of belonging \nCreatives and non-creatives alike – no improv or performance experience needed \nIndividuals who value compassion\, openness\, and radical acceptance \nPeople who want to grow in joyful\, embodied ways rather than through heavy or rigid processes \nThose who want to make a positive impact by starting with inner transformation

SUMMARY:All Your Friends
DESCRIPTION:An indie dance party for the ones who still romanticize a scratched iPod\, American Spirits\, and a blurry night soundtracked by bloghouse and post-punk revival. All Your Friends is at Eulogy on 21 March 2026\, bringing the sweat\, synths\, and nostalgia of the early 2010’s house party. \nThis is your basement-floor flashback to tight jeans\, smudged eyeliner\, and nights that felt like a house show turned afterparty. Expect a high-energy dance floor fueled by indie sleaze classics and remixes you forgot you loved\, from LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture to Foals\, Yeah Yeah Yeahs\, TV on the Radio\, MGMT\, Crystal Castles\, and more. No frills\, just bodies in motion. \nWhether you never left the Lower East Side or just miss the chaos of that era\, All Your Friends is a night dedicated to bad decisions\, blown speakers\, and the soundtrack of your favorite forgotten memories. Come ready for the sweat\, the noise\, and the party your Tumblr warned you about at Eulogy.

SUMMARY:AyurPrana Listening Room Presents: Marc Ribot
DESCRIPTION:Marc Ribot\, who the New York Times describes as “a deceptively articulate artist who uses inarticulateness as an expressive device\,” has released 25 albums under his own name over a 40-year career\, exploring everything from the pioneering jazz of Albert Ayler to the Cuban son of Arsenio Rodríguez. His solo release\, “Silent Movies” (Pi Recording 2010) has been described as a “down-in-mouth-near master piece” by the Village Voice and has landed on several Best of 2010 lists including the LA Times and critical praise across the board\, and 2014 saw the monumental release: Marc Ribot Trio Live at the Village Vanguard (Pi Recordings)\, documenting Marc’s first headline and the return of Henry Grimes at the historical venue in 2012 and included on Best of 2014 lists such as Downbeat Magazine and NPR’s 50 Favorites. \n2018 saw the release of two politically charged albums: “YRU Still Here?” (Northern Spy)\, the long awaited third album from Ribot’s post-rock/noise trio Ceramic Dog\, and “Songs of Resistance 1942-2018” (featuring guest vocalists Tom Waits\, Steve Earle\, Meshell Ndegeocello and more on Anti- Records) voicing anger and outrage during these turbulent times\, and both albums landing on various Best of 2018 lists including NPR’s All Songs Considered. \n2021 continues with a flurry of releases including Ceramic Dog’s “HOPE”\, recorded during the pandemic\, plus two reissues on vinyl for the first time: 1993’s long out-of-print “Marc Ribot Plays Solo Guitar Works of Frantz Casseus” & “Silent Movies” (2010). Additionally\, Marc’s first collection of writings\, “Unstrung: Rants & Stories of a Noise Guitarist”\, will be published by Akashic Books this August with an audiobook also in the works\, and Marc’s original score for limited series documentary\, “Queen of Meth”\, will premiere on the Discovery Channel. \nRolling Stone points out that “Guitarist Marc Ribot helped Tom Waits refine a new\, weird Americana on 1985’s Rain Dogs\, and since then he’s become the go-to guitar guy for all kinds of roots-music adventurers: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss\, Elvis Costello\, John Mellencamp.” Additional recording credits include Neko Case\, Diana Krall\, Elton John/Leon Russell’s The Union\, Solomon Burke\, John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards\, Marianne Faithful\, Joe Henry\, Allen Toussaint\, Medeski Martin & Wood\, Caetono Veloso\, Susana Baca\, Allen Ginsburg\, Madeline Peyroux\, Nora Jones\, Céu\, Akiko Yano\, The Black Keys\, and many others. Marc works regularly with Grammy® award winning producer T Bone Burnett and NY composer John Zorn. He has also composed and performed on numerous film scores such as “Walk The Line”\, “The Kids Are All Right\,” and “The Departed” (Scorcese).

SUMMARY:ENCOUNTERS WITH CREATIVES - JERRY MAXEY\, BASKET AND MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Jerry Maxey will be on hand to demonstrate his basket weaving techniques developed over decades of persistent and skillful mastery. \nJerry’s work is wicker-weave basketry of dyed rattan and seagrass cord\, and lathe turned wood bases\, rings and rims. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind handmade original\, even when he makes a second piece with the same construction. The wood incorporated in his basketry is all found wood\, generally trees that have fallen in storms\, and the wooden elements have all the variety that nature provides. Once the wood has been turned\, he leaves them indoors for at least three weeks to cure and stabilize. Then he does a final sanding and finishes each piece with pure tung oil. The rattan spokes are then attached to the wood to construct the basket\, weaving in the colors and patterns as he goes. When completed\, he finishes the entire piece with tung oil to bring out the colors and produce a slightly aged patina to the work.
