SUMMARY:Just Brew It
DESCRIPTION:Just Economics is thrilled to announce the 14 year anniversary return of its annual home brewers competition and fundraising event\, Just Brew It. Set to take place on June 1st\, at Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain\, Just Brew It promises an afternoon of exceptional craft beer\, community camaraderie\, and support for Just Economics’ impactful initiatives. \nJust Brew It has become a staple event around Asheville\, fondly known as “beer city” for its vibrant brewery scene. However\, beyond the hops and malts\, this event holds a deeper significance. Just Economics focuses on crucial issues like living wages\, affordable housing—a hugely significant topic of local conversation\, and public transit access\, making Just Brew It not just a celebration of beer but a platform for positive change. \nWhat makes Just Brew It stand out? Attendees consistently rave about the surprising creativity and quality of the brews\, showcasing the unparalleled artistry and experimentation of homebrewers. The economic reality is that commercial brewers can’t afford to be as experimental or exotic in their ingredients as homebrewers who enjoy the luxury of embracing a more artisan approach to the brewing craft. With over 50 unique beers created by 20+ talented individuals\, from classic IPAs to innovative concoctions featuring coffee\, chocolate\, spices\, and fruit\, there’s something to delight every beer enthusiast’s palate. \nBut it’s not just about the beer. Just Brew It welcomes all members of the community\, offering a selection of non-alcoholic drinks for those seeking a different kind of refreshment. Plus\, the event is not just a fundraiser but an opportunity to engage with Just Economics’ mission firsthand. \nHow can you be part of Just Brew It 2024? This event is not ticketed\, so simply become a 2024 individual member of Just Economics and gain access to the event\, where you can vote for your favorite brews. Upgrade to a VIP Membership for exclusive perks like early entry\, a VIP swag bag with a souvenir glass\, and more. \nJoin us on June 1st at Pisgah Brewing for Just Brew It 2024—where great beer meets community impact! Doors open at 2:00pm for general admission and 1:00pm for VIP ticket holders. \nFor more information\, visit justeconomicswnc.org/news-events/just-brew-it

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p

SUMMARY:Angela Autumn + Shay Martin Lovette
DESCRIPTION:It’s an evening of indie-folk singer-songwriters with Angela Autumn and Shay Martin Lovette! Friday\, June 7\, 6 p.m. doors and 7 p.m. show. $10 advance / $12 at the door. \nANGELA AUTUMN is an Appalachian born musician and writer based in Nashville\, TN. She grew up playing anything from ska to rock\, but now\, living in Nashville\, she veers towards the indie side of Americana and country. She has released several albums\, including ‘Cowboy Jack Clementine’ (2023) which has been praised for its unique blend of folk and country. Her music is heavily influenced by traditional folk music. \nSHAY MARTIN LOVETT’s True As They Come EP\, a new batch of homespun songs weaving intricate tales of retrospection and self-discovery will be released on April 26\, 2024. Like the winding rivers and tributaries of his Appalachian homeland\, Lovette’s music flows with emotional depth\, poetically exploring the beautiful melodies of the land and the human soul. With Joseph Terrell of Mipso back at the helm as producer\, these songs feature some of North Carolina’s brightest musicians and signify a shift in the gravity of Lovette’s writing.

SUMMARY:Hemlocks and Birds Educational Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, June 8th at 9:00 am for an educational hemlock and birding hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and the Transylvania County Bird Club. \nThe hike will start at the Pink Beds picnic area which has a few prominent\, healthy hemlocks around the edges of the field – an ideal place to discuss hemlock identification and the positive impact they have on our recreation areas. As we hike down the trail\, we will see a hemlock health monitoring plot where we’ll discuss how forest managers might make decisions on how best to protect their trees and how different management strategies can be integrated into a conservation plan. Not far away\, we’ll also see some of the casualties of the hemlock woolly adelgid and learn about how hemlocks are impacted and the effect their loss can have on the ecosystem. \nHemlocks are extremely important for bird habitat\, and The Transylvania County Bird Club will show us some of those birds along the way. The best birding\, for targets such as Appalachian Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and Brown Creepers\, is right at the bridge over the South Fork Mills River. Abundant snags are used here by a variety of woodpeckers\, Great Crested Flycatchers\, and other cavity nesters. Another good spot is along the northeast section of the trail. \nYou can also find many nesting warblers along Pink Beds Loop Trail including: Blackburnians\, Black and White\, Hooded\, Black-throated Blue\, Black-throated Green and both Louisiana and Northern Waterthrush\, many of which rely on hemlocks. \nThe hike is a mostly flat 5 mile loop with a few creek crossings and one short climb. We will plan to arrive back at our vehicles at 2pm. For any questions or to register\, contact Caroline Lord at outreach@savehemlocksnc.org or 828-252-4783. While the hike is free to attend\, your RSVP is required. Please sign up by Wednesday\, June 5th. Please include contact phone number\, email address\, and emergency contact when you sign up.
