The band made seven studio albums before disbanding in 2005. After a ten-year break\, they reunited and toured in 2015\, and in 2017 released a new LP — A Sentimental Education and an EP of instrumentals — A Place of Greater Safety. \nOther recent reissues include a deluxe 2xLP version of their classic Penthouse album (on Rhino) and another 2xLP set Lunafied that collects all the covers the band recorded in the 1990s. \nNow scattered around the country (Los Angeles\, New York and Austin) the band retains the same lineup that operated from 1999 to 2005: Dean Wareham on vocals/guitar\, his wife Britta Phillips on bass\, Sean Eden on guitar\, and Lee Wall on drums. \nA Luna Timeline: \n1992. Dean Wareham recruits Justin Harwood (ex-Chills) on bass and Stanley Demeski (ex-Feelies) on drums to record Lunapark for Elektra Records. After completing the album\, the band places an ad in the Village Voice and thus adds Sean Eden on guitar. Eden\, who is Canadian by birth and a trained actor\, plays lead guitar on the excellent Indian Summer EP (aka the Slide EP). \n1993. The band records their second album\, Bewitched\, featuring “California\,” “Tiger Lily” and “Friendly Advice.” \n1995 Luna’s classic third album\, Penthouse (1995) is recorded in New York City\, featuring guests Tom Verlaine (Television) and Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab). The band signs to Beggar’s Banquet in Europe. Rolling Stone calls it “one of the essential recordings of the ‘90s” \n1997 Lee Wall replaces the travel-weary Stanley Demeski on drums\, and the band records Pup Tent\, their fourth album for Elektra. \n1998 Luna recorded their fifth album The Days of Our Nights. \n1999 Justin Harwood moves back to his home country (New Zealand)\, and is replaced on bass by Britta Phillips. \n2000 finding themselves between contracts\, the band quickly records a live album — Luna Live! for the Arena Rock label. \n2002 the band sign to Jetset Records\, record Romantica\, co-produced by Gene Holder (DB’s) and Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev). Romantica was followed by the mini-LP Close Cover Before Striking. \n2004 Luna record their Rendezvous album in Brooklyn\, NY. Produced by Bryce Goggin with minimal overdubs\, it captures the band more-or-less live. \n2005 After a farewell tour\, on February 28 the band play their last show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. \n2015 After ten years away\, the band announces a commemorative world tour. The lineup is the exact ’99-’05 group: Dean Wareham and Sean Eden on guitar\, Lee Wall on drums\, and Britta Phillips (now married to Mr Wareham) on bass. \nSISTER RAY DAVIES \nSister Ray Davies is a brilliantly named new duo formed by Adam Morrow and Jamie Sego. Just ask Paul Thorn\, who’s spent three decades turning soulful grooves and small syllables into songs that pack a big wallop. Maybe he learned the power of minimalism from his years as a pro boxer; maybe it just comes naturally. But whether he’s targeting heads\, hearts\, hips or the occasional funny bone\, he somehow manages to condense large nuggets of wisdom into tight little mantras\, the kind embroiderers stitched onto pillows before internet memes existed.\nThorn’s new album\, Life is Just A Vapor\, contains some beauties: “Life is a vapor\, let’s live it while we can”; “tough times don’t last\, but tough people do” (from “Tough Times Don’t Last”); “any mountain up ahead is just a hill” (from “Old Melodies”). They’re words of advice\, comfort\, support\, encouragement\, often meant to uplift\, especially in times of struggle. \n“I like for people to be touched by music and get something from it\, something that they can take with them throughout the day\,” Thorn says. “Every song on this album\, there’s a message in it of some sort about how to live life.” \nAmerican Blues Scene writer Don Wilcock calls Thorn “an everyman (who) addresses things we all think about\, but few can articulate with the kind of candor\, humor and folksy truth that immediately endear him to almost everyone lucky enough to hear his music.” \nWhether he’s expressing love in “I Knew\,” warning an ex’s new conquest about the dangers ahead in “She Will\,” extolling the value of holding off on sex in “Wait” or listing the ingredients for making a marriage work in “Courage My Love” (“a half-acre on your daddy’s land / and a little luck / a load of white gravel in our driveway / so we don’t get stuck in a rut /a 3-horsepower lawnmower and courage my love”)\, Thorn delivers his messages with consummate skill — and pinpoint precision. One minute\, he’ll unwind an outrageous tale full of wild characters (often accompanied by his own cartoonish illustrations); the next\, he’ll tug at heartstrings with confessions of love\, loss or failed dreams\, balancing wit and pathos with an ease only the best storytellers can pull off. One of Thorn’s favorites was his friend and mentor John Prine\, who inspired the title tune.

Join us for an evening at the outer edges of sound\, featuring the debut of Mueller’s FRIEND LESS\, Lion’s return to Asheville\, and Franich’s album release. \nFRIEND LESS \nFRIEND LESS is a project by Jon Mueller. Its two recent EPs\, Energy Rippers and Logic of Relics (with Bundy K. Brown and James Plotkin) aim to provoke the heart\, mind and body through an unorthodox approach to rhythmic patterns. In performance\, the pieces from Energy Rippers lean on a system of AIR (Acoustic Improvised Rhythm) using drums and voice to achieve a similar effect. More information about the project can be found at rhythmplex.com. \nJon Mueller studied jazz drumming with Hal Russell at Columbia College in Chicago\, and singing with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela at the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York. A prolific performer\, he tours extensively and has appeared at festivals and venues throughout the United States\, Canada\, England\, Europe and Japan. \nIn addition to his solo work\, Mueller has collaborated and performed with groups such as Who is the Witness?\, Mind Over Mirrors\, Volcano Choir\, Collections of Colonies of Bees\, and Pele. He has also worked with artists including Olivia Block\, Aaron Turner\, Faith Coloccia\, Timo van Luijk\, Dawn Springer\, Chris Hefner\, Jason Kahn\, Hal Rammel\, Asmus Tietchens\, Z’EV\, Rhys Chatham\, Jarboe\, James Plotkin\, Duane Pitre\, and Raymond Dijkstra. \nHe has released music on renowned labels such as Room40\, Astres d’Or\, American Dreams\, Table of the Elements\, Type Recordings\, Important Records\, Taiga Records\, SIGE Records\, and his own imprint\, Rhythmplex. \nAdam Lion \nOffering “a tone so pure it is almost a sine-wave” (The Wire)\, Adam Lion is a percussionist/vibraphonist investigating enabling constraint\, acoustics\, repetition\, surprise\, and coincidence. His experimental performances blur acoustic space\, creating opportunities for new sonic frameworks to naturally emerge. Within this process\, new realities grow\, encouraging listeners to investigate the hidden potential of reimagined sound. Based in Los Angeles\, his work has been featured in The New York Times\, Pitchfork Media\, Artforum Magazine\, and Bandcamp Daily. \n“When a Line Bends” is a vibraphone composition/improvisation performed by Adam Lion. This solo is an ever changing study of sound\, material\, performer\, and space. As these subjects enmesh\, relationships emerge dictating form and process\, pushing the music with a sense of immediacy. Lion navigates these constraints through techniques developed during the spontaneity of live performance\, an approach which openly embraces contingency as a powerful compositional tool. \nBryce Franich’s Trekchö Ensemble \nBryce Franich is an Asheville-based musician whose work focuses on feedback\, timbre\, and texture. \nHis latest project\, Trekchö Ensemble\, is an improvisational group made up of musicians working in experimental\, improvised\, and jazz music. This performance features Shane McCord\, Clay White\, Landon George\, Ashley Paul\, and Tony Rolando\, combining harmonium\, strings\, winds\, guitar\, gong\, and modular synthesis. DESCRIPTION:Shinyribs reassembles the American song bag like a picker in a junkyard; Texas singer-songwriter\, East Tx blues\, Louisiana swamp n’ rhythm\, honky tonk\, Oklahoma swing\, Golden-Triangle Cajun\, and Arkansas jazz are all filtered through the singular vision of Kevin Russell\, one of Austin’s most celebrated and criminally underrated singer-songwriters. \nThe Austin-based supergroup has entered a bold new chapter with the small baller “Shortribs” configuration — a tightly arranged powerhouse built to showcase what has always been at the heart of the Shinyribs experience: Russell’s legendary songwriting chops\, his iconic voice\, and the infamous hi-jinks of the self-proclaimed world’s oldest living male exotic dancer. Self-produced\, When We Disappear features nine new tracks co-written by co-founders Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono — collection of lit-psych rock songs Inspired by psychology and literature — as well as a raw\, garagey cover of Buffy St. Marie’s 1964 addiction song “Codine.” \n“Greg [Loiacono\, co-founder) sent me a rough demo of this song and I thought it was promising\,” says Hips co-founder Tim Bluhm of “When We Disappear.” “What he was singing was place-holder gibberish\, or sounds mixed with some actual lyrics\, including what would become the title. I went through it and matched words to his sounds and then tweaked the words to tell a kind of impressionistic history of our adventures together. In this way I believe both Greg’s and my own subconscious worlds revealed themselves. The music is simple and loose\, helping with the devil-may-care attitude of the singing.” \nHailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits\,” The Mother Hips’ headline and festival performances have became the stuff of legend\, finding them sharing stages with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Indigo dye is often used to get the distinctive patterns you may recognize in today’s fashion and home décor fabrics. \nIn this hands-on two-day workshop\, artist Diane Kuehn will share the fundamentals of shibori folding and binding techniques to create beautiful patterns on fabric with indigo dye. We will also learn to prepare an indigo vat and how to prepare fabric to dye with scouring techniques. Students can expect to make pillow or napkin sized sample pieces and a cotton scarf. An additional small piece of clothing to upcycle can be brought from home. \nSuitable for beginner and intermediate skill levels.

SUMMARY:ENCOUNTERS WITH CREATIVES – JERRY MAXEY\, BASKET AND MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Jerry Maxey will be on hand to demonstrate his basket weaving techniques developed over decades of persistent and skillful mastery. \nJerry’s work is wicker-weave basketry of dyed rattan and seagrass cord\, and lathe turned wood bases\, rings and rims. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind handmade original\, even when he makes a second piece with the same construction. The wood incorporated in his basketry is all found wood\, generally trees that have fallen in storms\, and the wooden elements have all the variety that nature provides. Once the wood has been turned\, he leaves them indoors for at least three weeks to cure and stabilize. Then he does a final sanding and finishes each piece with pure tung oil. The rattan spokes are then attached to the wood to construct the basket\, weaving in the colors and patterns as he goes. When completed\, he finishes the entire piece with tung oil to bring out the colors and produce a slightly aged patina to the work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen | The Curious World of Hieronymus Bosch
DESCRIPTION:“Hieronymus Bosch – Visions of Genius” at the Het Noordbrabants Museum (February 13–May 8\, 2016) was the largest ever Bosch retrospective\, bringing 36 of his 44 surviving works together in Den Bosch. The exhibition took a radical approach\, offering research and conservation expertise in exchange for loans from the world’s best museums. Over 420\,000 people flocked to the exhibition to marvel at Bosch’s curious creations\, with opening hours extended to 1am to accommodate the phenomenal demand. \nAccompanied by expert insights from the exhibition’s curators and leading cultural critics\, the film delves into the life of the visionary artist to explore the inspiration behind his strange and haunting works. It’s what keeps the best bands afloat — song after song\, show after show\, record after record. \nMike Harmeier was still in his early 20s when he formed Mike and the Moonpies. From the start\, they were the definition of a workingman’s country band\, cutting their teeth with five-hour sets on Austin’s dancehall circuit before spreading their music to the rest of America. By the early 2020s\, they’d become global ambassadors of homegrown Texas music\, flying their flag everywhere from Abbey Road Studios (where they recorded 2019’s Cheap Silver & Solid Country Gold with help from the London Symphony Orchestra) to the Grand Ole Opry. \nThe growth was remarkable\, but all that momentum left Harmeier and his four bandmates — drummer Taylor Englert\, guitarist Catlin Rutherford\, bassist Omar Oyoque\, and steel guitarist Zachary Moulton — looking for something new. After all\, their music had decidedly changed. Why shouldn’t their name do the same? \nSilverada marks a new chapter in the band’s history. It’s not just the title of the boldest release of the group’s critically-acclaimed career; it’s also the name of the reinvigorated band itself. \n“Back in the day\, all we wanted to do was play the Broken Spoke\,” says Harmeier\, nodding to the hometown honky-tonk in Austin\, TX\, where Silverada began sowing the seeds for a sound that mixed timeless twang with modern-day dynamics. “We had different aspirations back then. We were still figuring out what kind of band we were gonna be\, and that took a lot of time and a lot of records. \nA lot of records\, indeed. Silverada marks the group’s ninth release\, and it balances the strengths they’ve accumulated along the way — sharp\, detailed songwriting that bounces between autobiographical sketches and character studies; gorgeous swells of pedal steel that drift through the songs like weather; a rhythm section capable of country shuffles\, hard-charging rock & roll tempos\, and everything in between — with a willingness to break old rules and open new doors. “Radio Wave” is a roots-rock anthem for the highway and the heartland\, peppered with Springsteen-worthy hooks and War On Drugs-inspired atmospherics. “Eagle Rare” launches the band into outer space during its explosive middle section\, which the band improvised in the recording studio. “Stay By My Side” showcases Silverada’s road-warrior credentials — the band recorded the track live during a tour across the American Southeast\, capturing it in a single take at Capricorn Sound Studios in Macon\, Georgia — while “Wallflower” blends the organic with the otherworldly\, finding room for harmonized guitar solos\, driving disco beats\, and 808 percussion. \n“Going into the studio\, everybody in the band felt inspired to do something bigger than what they’d done before\,” Harmeier explains. “We all knew we were at a precipice\, and we wanted to jump. I brought in some songs that were metaphorical and not always straightforward\, and that showed the guys that I wanted to take this music somewhere new… so they threw their own rulebooks out the window\, too.”

Naucke & World Room \nMonday\, October 12th\, 2026 \nAyurPrana Listening Room – 312 Haywood Rd\, Asheville\, NC 28806 \nDoors 6 PM || Show 7 PM \nHorse Lords \nHorse Lords were founded in Baltimore\, Maryland in 2010; they evolved from the experimental collective Teeth Mountain and began as a trio with drummer Sam Haberman\, guitarist Owen Gardner\, and bassist Max Eilbacher\, soon adding alto saxophonist Andrew Bernstein to the core ensemble. Though Horse Lords grew out of the fertile Baltimore noise and leftfield rock scene\, a storied environment for artists and weirdos that has nurtured many an influential outsider band (Lungfish\, Matmos)\, their approach is more omnivorous than the stippled rhythms of instrumental electric rock would indicate. \nAcross sixteen years of frequent touring\, Horse Lords have released ten studio\, live\, and collaboration albums in addition to a split EP with fellow Baltimoreans Lower Dens\, a handful of singles and compilation tracks. For RVNG’s FRKWYS series\, the band collaborated with Berlin-based composer Arnold Dreyblatt\, a onetime student of La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros whose just intonation chamber music was a crucial part of the post-Fluxus Downtown New York City environment. \nWith the relocation of three of the four members to Germany beginning in 2021\, the potential for more further creative exploration\, and performance opportunities including the Moers Festival (with an 11-piece lineup\, interpreting Julius Eastman’s music as well as their own)\, the interdisciplinary phases of the band’s music was poised for fascinating new directions. The band observes “We are always trying to balance working within the limitations of the quartet and pushing beyond them. \nFor their second studio album on RVNG Intl.\, Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!\, Horse Lords have followed this notion and augmented the instrumentation\, expanding the format slightly to include bass clarinetist Madison Greenstone (TAK Ensemble)\, trombonist Weston Olencki (Nate Wooley\, RAGE Thormbones) and vocalists Nina Guo (Departure Duo) and Evelyn Saylor (Holly Herndon\, Caterina Barbieri) across a program of twelve original compositions. \nDemand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! is a reference to a line in a poem by Russian Futurist writer Vladimir Myakovsky\, and the band have also name-checked the Bauhaus weaver Anni Albers (wife of painter Josef Albers)\, Islamic geometrical patterning\, Dutch avant-garde group the Maciunas Ensemble (themselves named after Fluxus artist and typographer George Maciunas)\, composer/writers Tom Johnson\, Henry Flynt and Catherine Christer Hennix\, and musically draw from sources as diverse as Roscoe Holcolmb\, James Brown\, Kuwaiti/Bahraini sawt\, and electronic composers Maryanne Amacher and Jaap Vink. \nAs the members are keen to point out\, Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! is “a bid for the flattening of time and perception in favor of greater goods [and] the iterative nature of reaching/building a paradise in this life\, not the next\,” and the new album at hand is an illuminating starting point for eternal nowness. \nWorld Room \nWorld Room is the trio of Ashley Paul (saxophone)\, Jake Pugh (electronics)\, and Shane Justice McCord (bass clarinet\, piano). The music revolves around minimalist compositions\, improvisation\, and live processing. They’ve been blessed to perform at the Black Mountain College ReHappening experimental arts festival\, Black Mountain College museum\, and to have recently supported Wolf Eyes. Their debut album is out this autumn on Orange Milk Records. \nBrett W​.​​ Naucke \nBrett W​.​​ Naucke is an American experimental composer and visual artist from Chicago\, IL currently based in Asheville\, NC. \nNaucke’s sonic output has been primarily focused on marrying an ever-evolving practice of synthesis with conceptual narratives. His most recent recordings have been released by a wide variety of acclaimed labels such as American Dreams\, Spectrum Spools\, Umor Rex\, L.I.E.S\, and Hausu Mountain in addition to many others since 2010. Beyond live performance\, Naucke has provided the original scores for several films\, sound design for interactive gaming\, and presented many works for multi-channel audio and video installations. \nAll ages\nEnding Time is an estimate\nTickets only sold through DICE. A singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist\, he began self producing his own music in 2016. He has varied between having a band and playing solo. He has become known for raw emotion and a profound connection to his audience\, which for his solo years took on the name of “The Bonnevilles”. 2024 saw Josiah and the Bonnevilles reaching new heights\, completing a headlining tour of thirty-three sold-out dates followed by a slew of international stops that proved his global following. After taking 2025 away from the public eye to work on new music\, 2026 brought the 4th JATB album “As Is’ and the accompaniment of a stellar cast of musicians both in studio and and stage.\nLeming comes by his empathy for working people honestly. He’s one of nine siblings\, born and raised in Morristown\, Tennessee\, right in the heart of Appalachia. His father was a factory worker. He taught himself piano when he was eight and was writing songs by thirteen.
